Prelude O Day of Peace arr. Charles Callahan JERUSALEM

Prayers of Confession, turning to face the cross of Christ.

As we gather for worship, we make the sign of the cross as a reminder of our baptism.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Let us pray. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Apostle John writes this: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

Silence for reflection and self-examination. Gracious God, Have mercy on me according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. Amen. Psalm 51:1-3,10-12

A prayer written by King David after his affair with Bethsheba was made known.

God’s Promise of Forgiveness In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake God forgives you all your sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ he gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn of Praise Tune: We Praise You, O God KREMSER

We praise you, O God, our redeemer, creator;

in grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before you; we kneel and adore you; we bless your holy name; glad praises we sing.

Let us pray. We give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have protected us through the night from all harm and danger. We ask that you would also protect us today from sin and all evil, so that our life and actions may please you. Into your hands we commend ourselves: our bodies, our souls, and all that is ours. Let your holy angels be with us, so that the wicked foe may have no power over us. Amen.

Word

First Reading Psalm 145:10-18 The greatness and goodness of God The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Second Reading Ephesians 3:14-21 A prayer for the church Paul writes: 14For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all genera-tions, forever and ever. Amen. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Please stand for the reading of the Gospel. “Alleluia” is an ancient Jewish acclamation that means “God be praised.” In the Christian tradition, Alleluia means “He is risen!”

The Holy Gospel John 6:1-14 Feeding the five thousand 1Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” 6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” 8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” 10Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” 13So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.”

Apostles’ Creed

Gathered as God’s people across time and space, let us confess our faith using the words of the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession. Each petition ends: Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer. The congregation is invited to offer up the names of people they want added to the prayers.

Sharing the Peace of Christ The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

Offertory Anthem Come, Let Us Eat For Now the Table Is Spread B. Kwillia/ C. Carnahan

Our anthem this morning is a joyful invitation to dine at the feast God has spread for us in communion. The words were originally written in LOMA, a language of the people of Liberia and Guinea, Africa, by Billema Kwillia, a convert to Christianity and a literacy teacher and evangelist born in 1925 in Liberia.

Come, let us eat for now the feast is spread. Our Lord's body let us take together. Come, let us drink for now the wine is poured, Jesus' blood poured let us drink together.

In his presence now we meet and rest, in the presence of our Lord we gather. Rise, then to spread abroad God's mighty Word, Jesus risen will bring in the Kingdom.

Rise then, spread God's mighty Word!

Offertory Hymn As the gifts are presented, the congregation stands and sings the Doxology:

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen Let us pray. Merciful Father, we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us—our selves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise. ... and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow’r and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who come in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Eucharistic Prayer, followed by the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God!
