Mother, your love was something

that no one can explain. It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain.

It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking.

And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking.

It believes beyond believing when the world around –condemns,

And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems.

It is far beyond defining; it defies all explanation.

And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation.

A many splendored miracle that man cannot understand,

And another wondrous evidence of God’s tender guiding hand.

Mrs. Alma Murray Coleman entered heaven’s gateway on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the age of 92. The second of four children, Alma was born May 22, 1924 in St. George, South Carolina to the late Fred and Pearl Brothers-Murray. She was predeceased by her three siblings: Raymond and Felix Murray and Pearl Murray Jenkins.

At an early age she received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She attended elementary school in St. George, South Carolina and in Trenton, New Jersey. She attended Wilkinson High in Orangeburg, South Carolina and Bettis Academy in Trenton, South Carolina. She was a graduate of Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas with a B.A. degree in Elementary Education and Social Studies. She attended graduate school at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg.

At Philander Smith College, she was very popular around the campus. She was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Rho Gamma Musical Sorority, Student Christian Association, Dramatic Club, French Club and other social organizations on campus. She was Senior Class Queen and runner-up for Miss Homecoming 1944-45. She was described as “Personality Plus” on the campus.

Mrs. Coleman taught in the South Carolina public school system in Edgefield, Chesterfield and Florence Counties for 26 years. She was also a counselor for 17 years at Epworth Children’s Home in Columbia from where she retired. She had lifelong passion for teaching and working with youth.

All of her life she was a very generous, caring and giving person. She was also a dedicated and active member of Jerusalem Baptist Church until her health declined. She was married to the late Deacon George C. Coleman.

Those left to cherish fond and precious memories of Mrs. Alma Murray-Coleman are: her daughters, Beverly (George) Martin of Gilbert, South Carolina and Sharon Coleman of Columbia, South Carolina; two sisters Martha (Fred) Clark and Mary (Roscoe) Smith, both of Summerville, South Carolina; two step-grandchildren, Napoleon and Bridget Martin of Columbia, South Carolina; six step-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

We thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new.

We thought about you yesterday, And days before that too.

We think of you in silence,

We often speak your name; All we have now are memories,

And your picture in a frame.

Your memory is our keepsake, With which we will never part;

God has you in his keep, We have you in our heart.

It broke our hearts to lose you.

But you didn't go alone, For a part of us went with you...

The day God took you home.
