YOUNG ADULT PROGRAMS
The South Holland Public Library staff cares about your children and has planned programs to keep them reading and learning all summer. Children who participate in our Summer Reading Program keep their brains active and enter school in the fall ready to learn and succeed! In addition to participating in our Summer Reading Program “Reading Is So-o-o-o Delicious”, here are some other ideas to keep your children reading during the summer:
1. Go to the library every single week and check out books to take home. 2. Encourage reading time and limit TV and video games. 3. Read out loud to your children—encourage them to read out loud to you. 4. Keep library books in a basket or container that is in a prominent location in your
home so that children see them often. Encourage them to return the books to the “Library” basket to avoid misplacing them.
5. Use the summer to read “fun” books that might not be assigned at school. Joke books, cook books, riddles, graphic novels all count!
6. Read out loud to your children, no matter how old they are. (Unless they have moved out of the house and taken their furniture with them.)
7. Build up the listening stamina of young children by reading in short bursts (three minutes). As they develop their listening skills, read for longer periods of time until you get to at least thirty minutes.
8. Reward reading with reading—after the children have read all their books, reward them with another trip to the Library!
9. Encourage art projects that are based on books. Suggest that the children draw a picture from a book they have read.
10. Car trips are an especially good time to read books. Take turns reading to one another as the miles go by.
