Tips from Your Local PGA Proat Ledene Golf Centre

This month’s article will be different as we will pay more attention to golf course management, in other words how to make the best score possible

when you are playing on the golf course. If like all keen golfers you have been watching some of the majors on the television recently, (US Open) you will have seen most of the top golfers using irons and fairway woods off the tee for position and to keep out of the thick rough on either side of the fairway. This would be their way of plotting themselves around a very tough golf course, where it was vital to hit the fairways as a loose shot would almost certainly lead to dropping shots. When I am on the range listening to talk about medal rounds at the weekends, numerous times I have heard that they have played well for 15 holes but then took 7 or 8’s on a couple of holes and this has took their score over their handicap limit. So managing yourself on the golf course as well as perfecting your technique is just as vital to lowering your score. Therefore with a bit of forward planning as you approach each hole you will be prepared for what lies ahead. Look at your scorecard or a course planner, this will give you information on yardages and any hazards ahead eg: bunkers, water etc. By knowing this you can plot your way around the course and hopefully avoid any trouble. When I am competing during the season in various Pro-Ams in the Midlands, I have sometimes observed many amateurs hit the ball off line and try to be too ambitious on their next shot, this subsequently results in them getting into more trouble, affecting their confidence, their game and their final score. I have seen amateurs with a handicap of 14/15 finish with a score which doesn’t reflect their ability due to poor course management. So if you follow these few tips when on the course they will hopefully help lower your score:-1. Remember you do not have to hit your driver from the tee

just because you are playing a short par 4, consider using a fairway wood or even an iron to ensure you give yourself every chance of hitting the fairway, especially if the hole has lots of hazards.(e-g bunkers and water)

2. If lying in deep rough don’t be over ambitious with the club you are using. Use a club with as much loft as possible like a 9 or a pitching wedge play yourself back on to the fairway. It will still be possible to make a par from this position as opposed to leaving the ball in the deep rough and running up a much higher score.

3. If your ball is on the fringe of the green, try putting the ball instead of chipping. You may have more control with your putter rather than hitting a poor chip shot and ending up even further away from the hole than when you started. (A poor putt will always end up nearer than a poor chip shot).

4. And finally just remember everyone has a hole or a certain tee shot on a course they play regularly which consistently causes them problems. Perhaps rethink how you normally play that particular hole and taking into consideration some of the strategies above you may find you can eliminate that card wrecking hole from your round.

A Word From Your MPIn politics, I am sometimes astounded by the stupidity of some ideas that are put forward. The latest such idea was proposed by Staffordshire County Council, which is seeking to change its rules on home to school transport. This will mean that many children, who have previously received home to school transport, will in the future have to pay £380 per child, per year. For a family with two or three children, this is a great burden and something that I am continuing to campaign against, as I fear it is almost a tax upon education and opportunity. The County Council’s proposals will mean that many children in South Staffordshire will no longer receive free home to school transport and, instead, will be forced to find the money to pay for it. Furthermore, it is not just these families that are likely to be impacted by this new policy. The potential consequences could be far wider. It is my fear that many families will be in the situation of having to look at sending their children to schools not within the county of Staffordshire, but potentially in neighbouring authorities such as Wolverhampton. The outcome of this could be a dramatic drop in pupil numbers in many of our excellent middle schools and high schools. This, in itself, could jeopardise the very future of the schools that act as the beating heart of our villages.I have already met with the leader of the County Council to voice my deep concern over this policy and I will carry on leading a campaign to ensure that this ridiculous idea is defeated. But, could I also ask of you – if you believe that the viability of our schools is an important concern - whether you could also take part in the consultation and voice your opposition to these ill thought out proposals. How to object: You can obtain more information about the scheme or submit your views online by visiting: www.staff ordshire.gov.uk/transportconsultation. You can send any comments via post to: Transport Consultation, Staffordshire County Council, Tipping Street, Stafford, ST16 2DH OR e-mail your opinion to: [email protected]. All comments must be received by 12th July, 2013, to be taken into consideration by Sta ordshire County Council’s Cabinet. A number of drop-in sessionsff have also been arranged and the dates, and venues, can be found on the County Council website or by calling 0300 111 8000.
