What a show this is going to be! The Heralds of Harmony have new music and are bringing Storm Front, the 2010 International Gold Medalists, and Main Street, 2011 International Medalists and Sunshine District Champs, to-gether with the chorus for an incredibly entertaining show. The venue, the USF School of Music and Concert Hall at the USF Tampa Campus, was built a year ago, and it is gorgeous and the acoustics are incredible! You don’t want to miss this show!! See page 3 for more details.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT (Dave Roberts, Brad Grabill, Marty Port, and Ed McKenzie) have been singing together as a quartet since the fall of 2010. Their very first gig, way-back-then, was a private birthday party/surprise with 6 people... a small, but enjoyable beginning. Since then, chances to sing have continued to come their way. During 2011 the guys performed 28 times, including private celebrations of birthdays and anniversaries, wedding receptions, fundraising events, the Heralds Christmas shows, the annual Navy Ball, and the USSOCOM Headquarters Christmas gala on MacDill Air Force Base. So far in 2012 Special Arrangement has been blessed to be included on Heralds of Harmony shows, entertain at many private functions, as well as perform both Canadian and US national anthems for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox. The guys were also featured on the video page of the Tampa Bay Times back in February. The rehearsing and performing have become highlights for them… but the BEST thing about SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT is the friendship that continues to grow with one another. And, they’re convinced, it will last for years to come!

memorY mAKerS retireS I’m sad to report that MEMORY MAKERS was forced into retirement a few weeks ago when lead, Randy Lawson announced that he has accepted a job in California. It isn’t likely that Dan, Ralph and I will look to replace him. We were together about 16 months and enjoyed the progress we’ve made in both singing and performing. It was an enjoyable experience while it lasted and I think we all grew from it. I’m sure we’ll always remain connected to barbershop and eventually find our own niches that will “scratch our itches”. Singing with the Heralds seem to be doing that for me at this time. Ray Scalise (for) MEMORY MAKERS

Keep Kent in your thoughts and prayers as he mends, heals, and receives chemo treatments to make sure all that yuk is gone for good.

Getting to know a Heralddave Larson
You know Dave as a Bass with the Heralds, an all around great guy. Did you know that Dave is also a pilot? He has many things in common with his fellow Heralds. Joe McCarthy and Ralph Brown are also pilots, and Dave was born in Mankato, Minnesota. That’s the city where Charlie Barbarisi opened his first medical practice. David never met Charlie there though, because he lived such a healthy lifestyle :) Dave is most proud of raising a family, and having a successful career as an airline pilot. His daughter lives in Kansas City where he stayed when the Heralds went to International in KC. Sadly, he lost his son to cancer four years ago. He also has three grandchildren—one living right here in St Petersburg. When Dave isn’t singing Barbershop he enjoys playing golf but feels he’s getting up in years and his back limits him. However, he and his wife get up at 5:30 AM every Monday through Friday and go to the gym. After their workout, they meet with a few gym buddies for coffee. We should all take heed and follow David’s regimen. Remembering his most humorous memory as a Herald, Dave said, “Being a Herald has been good fun but if it’s humor you’re asking about, I have to go back
to Nashville. We were under the direction of Tony and had 107 men on the risers. The chorus had adopted a prisoner theme. We had the audience laughing so hard that I thought we’d have to retake the pitch.” When asked what advice he would give to a new Herald,
Dave replied “ Above all, have fun. You have to be open to learn because being a Herald isn’t sitting in a chair singing old favorites. It’s three hours a week on the risers. It’s hard work but don’t let it get to you—there’s a big payoff at the end when the chorus finally gets it right and you know you carried your part.”
Special thanks to my anonymous tipster that Dave would be a good subject for this new feature, and to Art
McNeil for helping with Dave’s interview. If you would like to suggest a fellow Herald, or volunteer yourself, for
this segment please contact me! ~Your devoted editor, Roxanne

The public side of the web site continues to ‘evolve’ with new information. The ‘BOTY’ history is now complete with the pictures, names, and year of achievement for our Barbershoppers of the Year. These members are so honored because of their contributions to the Heralds and it is fitting that they have a special place in our History. Please go to ‘The Heralds’ – ‘Our History’ – ‘Member Awards’ – ‘BOTY’. We could always use better BOTY pictures but have gotten some by cropping from group pictures. Thanks to Steve Matheson for helping complete this work. The public side also features the contributions that the Heralds have made to Youth activities. Under the ‘Youth’ tab, there are three slides that feature our activities along with links to videos at the local and national levels. Take some time to view these videos and be proud of your contributions to these activities. As to the member side of the web site, some amazing functions have been implemented by the Music Team. Did you know that you can go to the ‘Calendar’ (click on that) and then to the date of the rehearsal and find the program for that date? Not only can you look ‘ahead’ but we can begin preparation for that event. The Music Team is putting that information out there and we can now take advantage of it.Did you know that you can upload your audition recording? Go to ‘My Account’ which is on the left side of the screen under your name, click on that. Click on the ‘Song Status’ tab (top bar), for whatever song you have an audition file, for example Patriotic Medley, click on ‘Upload’, Under ‘Attachments’, Attach New File, Click the ‘Browse’ Box and this is looking for the file to be uploaded on your computer, locate the file and click ‘Open’ and then ‘Attach’. You’re done. Your reviewer can now listen to the recording and only our reviewers can hear it. Everyone saves time. Please enjoy these features and functions as our web site offers some dynamic management tools.Did you know the announcement of Heralds of Harmony.org went to thousands of barbershoppers and patrons? The web team is getting many inquiries, questions, and comments on the new site. We have received many inquiries on ‘can you help us?’ with other sites, etc. Our answer is always as time permits but these queries are normally directed to Groupanizer support. The web site team still has many activities to explore and implement. ~Dave Roberts

For the past 13 years, the Sunshine District of the Bar-bershop Harmony Society has sponsored a 3-day Summer Music Camp for Florida high school boys and their Music Educators. This Camp, called Harmony Explosion, is entirely FREE (except for a small non-refundable registration fee of $20.00 for the boys). There is nothing to buy and there is nothing to join. This is not just another Camp. This year’s clinicians are Alex and Dan Rubin. The teaching quartet is their new quartet Throwback. The students will experience the very best of every aspect of Barbershop singing!Ken Carter and his amazing staff are preparing an awe-some event but your financial help is greatly needed. Please find it in your hearts to con-tribute to the future of barber-shopping by sending a con-tribution to Ken Carter, Camp Director, 1202 Arriago Way, The Villages, FL 32162-0106. Gifts are welcomed from individuals, quartets, choruses and businesses.

What a competition! The Heralds did not compete this convention,
they were there to sing off the trophy from last year’s championship, but there were plenty of excellent competitors on hand for this convention!
On Friday night, April 13th after the quartet semi finals, over 40 Heralds appeared on stage to sing off the Sunshine District Championship trophy. On Saturday, that
trophy and the 2012 Championship was awarded to T.H.X. of the Sunrise Chapter with a score of 960. Congratulations T.H.X.!
Tampa had two quartets who initially entered the contest for international qualifiers; but, unfortunately, they both had to scratch. 75 South and Flashback scratched for health reasons. It appears both quartets will be back in action soon though and, who knows, maybe they can qualify out of district. Sunshine District is sending three quartets to International this year (so far). The PURSUIT and Throwback won that chance this weekend and Main Street qualified out of district prior to this weekend’s competition.
Scores were not yet posted on the District website at press time for this issue, but I’m sure they will be there soon! Check out the
District website at www.sunshinedistrict.org
The Tampa Chapter was recognized by the Harmony Foundation for the exemplary achievement of contributing $219.57 per member to Harmony Foundation programs during 2011 and
awarded the Silver Award. The Harmony Foundation’s mission is to support and share the gift of singing through funding music education for students in High School and College.
