The Installation Banquet is a celebration of all the good things the Heralds did and got to do in the previous year, as well as installing the new officers for the upcoming year. It is an event that is for congratulating each other as brothers, members of the Heralds organization.
Many members were recognized for their contribution to the chapter in 2013, “but they didn’t get an award”. That quote is a LOT funnier to those of you who were in attendance.
Thank you Nick Schwob for installing the officers so eloquently. I would reprint his entire speech here but it was far too lengthy!
Thank you Al Kelly for setting up the evening, great job!

Dear Dave and the Heralds: Wow...what a great night! Celeste and I would like to thank all of you for the “nice touch” of inviting the past Herald’s BOTY recipients to the 2014 Installation Banquet. It was good seeing many of my old friends and meet many of the chorus members I had never met before. It appears the “ship” is under great leadership both musically and administratively. If things continue the way they have in the past year, there is no doubt in my mind, great accomplishments are yours to grasp and build on in the coming years.

A Ding Dang Great Year!
The Tampa HERALD Page 6 January 2014
As I write, I am on a plane to Maryland, looking back on the 2014 Awards Banquet and Installation Dinner last night, and back on my history with the Heralds. I started as a wide-eyed kid fresh from the Christmas show and passed my audition with knees a-knock-ing. Just a few months after that, I found myself on the International stage in Denver, heart a-pounding. A year later I was Assistant Secretary, and a year after that, Secretary. You come out of class at LeadAc convinced that the entire chapter depends on you (which of course it does; thanks, Brian!); LeadAc con-vinced me that I could be Secretary and it wouldn’t be a train wreck.
A couple years after that, in 2011, I was in the President’s class, looking forward, knees a-knocking again, to taking the reins from John Santamaria the following year, in 2012. I remember asking Steve Jamison, our Director, “Are you okay with this? Can we work together?” And Steve smiled and said, “Oh, I recommended you!” Wow! Only to have John step down a few months in, and there I was in the hot-seat already. Later that year, the Board and I accept-ed Steve Jamison’s resignation, and started an official director Search. Tony came out on top, of course, and two years of working with him is certainly every-thing I could’ve asked for in a director.
The changes in the Board have been gradual; some-times it seemed like watching continental drift. But looking back, we’ve definitely come a long way. In the beginning, we met once a month, in person, at the Scottish Rite. Board meetings were frequently three hours long, sometimes longer. The budget meetings in November and December, and oc-casionally into January and February, were rarely something to look forward to. We eventually moved to online Board meetings, and eventually to mostly written reports. Board meetings that used to take three hours are now usually about an hour; and 45 or occasionally 30-minute Board meetings are not unknown. And as for those dreadful budgetary
meetings (well, I dread-ed them), in January we passed a budget and it seemed like just another agenda item.
And now, my goodness, I find myself Barbershopper of the Year! In the company of Dave Roberts, Bryan Hevel, Ralph Brown, Jack Greenfield, and Tony De Rosa, to name just a few! Holy cow! I’m still getting used to it. I’m sure I’ll have to spend 2014 trying to live up to it.
I’d like to thank Roxanne (again, and always, and for-ever) for everything she does for me, and the chorus. And I’d like to thank Dave Roberts, of course! Thanks, Dave! And thanks to the 2013 Board of Directors for clearly making me look pretty good! Thanks all of you, and thanks to all those that offered kind words and congratulations last night, and throughout my tenure as President.
And finally, y’all should know that Dave has really hit the ground running. He had a planning session last year, went to LeadAc last Saturday (sort of; actually he taught the President’s class, for the third time in a row), and is very much hip deep in everything the Heralds are doing. Or possibly neck deep; only he knows for sure!
I am looking forward to a smooth, productive, and harmonious year in 2014! I hope all active Heralds will do their part to help the chapter move forward and achieve its goals. And I invite any inactive Her-ald reading this to come on back, the water’s fine!
Thanks again to the Board, Dave, all the BOTYs, and Roxanne. It’s been a great year!
— Larry Clapp, Immediate Past President

Behind the Scenes with The Heralds
I’m pretty sure the Singing
Valentine Program varies for each chapter as each has a different talent mix, geographic area and target population.
However, each chapter addresses common areas:1. Deliverables - determine presentation to the recipient; i.e., selection and number of songs, card/candy/gift. 2. Service Area - determine demographic delivery area.3. Delivery Dates - only on Valentine’s Day or additional days.4. Price Structure - determine basic charge plus options/upgrades if applicable.5. Marketing - determine methods to promote the SV Program. 6. SV orders - determine method to take in requests.
I think after this, it gets pretty individual. The SV Chairman can’t possibly do everything so he puts together a team. Size of team and how much they can accomplish depends upon lead time; and this can be limiting if assigned after the holiday break. I can’t speak for other chapters, but for this year, I got the job and started working up a program last October. With what appeared to be lots of lead-time, I got ambitious about what I thought could be done. Taking the above topics in order:
1. Deliverables - We send our quartets in chapter tuxedoes to the recipient’s location, deliver two songs (“Heart of My Heart” and “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”), present a custom HoH greeting card and keepsake mug with HoH logo (* both designed by Roxanne Clapp) and filled with candy kisses wrapped and tied with a bow by our Angels. This year we have added phone delivery of SV’s. This enables us to deliver SV’s to anyone, anywhere.
2. Service Area - I decided to stick with with Hillsborough County (1266 sq. mi.; pop 1.3 million) and Pinellas County (600 sq. mi.; pop 1 million), and not venture into Pasco County.
3. Delivery Dates - Valentine’s Day this year is on a Friday. We decided to spread out deliveries (Thurs., Fri., Sat.) making more possible; and specifically promoting Thursday evening deliveries for the SV to be presented
at dinner because Friday would likely be more crowded. We added Saturday to enable us to deliver a SV when the recipient wasn’t at work and the couple and/or sender could be present.
4. Price Structure - We wanted to keep our base SV at $50 as it is an attractive price point. However, we also wanted the ability to ‘up sell.’ So we made the base SV at $50 an early-bird price during an 8-hour delivery window of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional charges apply for a 4-hour delivery window, and for a 1-hour delivery window. On February 13th, orders become ‘last minute’ and all prices rise as delivery schedules are in place.
5. Marketing - I studied this some, and contacted SV Chairmen from the past two years and how they run their SV Program. Methods are limited only by the imagination! I’d love to talk about some; however, space is limited. What we ARE doing this year is this: a. Advertise in the HoH Christmas Show Program. b. Banner ad on HoH website. c. SV delivery vehicle auto magnets, allowing every Herald to be a
mobile advertiser. d. SV delivery vehicle decals for auto parts curved or plastic where
a magnet won’t stick. e. SV business cards. These were first affixed to the Christmas
show program, then handed out to Heralds. Especially good for guys with the magnets or decals when asked about the SV Program; good for guys without magnets or decals too! Just give them a business card.
f. SV post cards, hand outs, mail outs. Perfect to put in doctor’s office waiting room.

g. SV flyers with tabs. Downloaded from BHS site and modified to show our SV contact information and local quartets.
h. SV flyers without tabs. (Same as above).i. Mass-media promotion. Steve Matheson is working with Fox13
to do a video of a SV delivery to be played the weekend before Valentine’s Day.
j. Partnership program. Al Kelly is working with service clubs, charities and ministries to get them to promote our SV Program with the promise of a fee for each SV ordered by their members.
k. Community and homeowners association newsletters. Dan Deignan is point man for getting human interest stories in community newsletters that serve our members.
l. Social Media. Since we can deliver a phone SV anywhere, Danny Wunderlin is working the social media to get the word out about our Program. See next paragraph re: orders.
6. SV Orders. In the past, each year we advertise a phone number for ordering in a specific county. This number changed every year. This year, we have a single number, for all counties (the chapter phone number) which will stay the same year after year and allows the Chapter to order marketing materials in bulk for good prices. Previously, the order taker filed each request on paper and processed it. We will still do that. Also, online ordering is being initiated and spearheaded by Rod Rodrigues. We are using a service to process orders, provide reports, schedule quartets and print out routes with maps. With online order capability, Danny Wunderlin can have social media contacts from anywhere or anyone who can buy a SV to be delivered by phone from the Heralds.
If it appears there is a lot going on and a lot of Heralds, and Roxanne Clapp, are involved. Congratulations, you get the point! There is a large effort involved long before we actually send quartets out to deliver Singing Valentines. The good news is this will likely be the biggest fund raising event for the chorus outside of our Annual Show and Christmas shows. And all the talent will be from within the chapter.
I’m still looking for a volunteer to do the SV phone deliveries. The scripts are written, plans in place, songs recorded. I just need someone to take on the job of making the calls, reading a message to the recipient and playing the recorded songs.

All of us who sing with the Heralds understand there is something magical and magnetic that draws us to our hobby. But most of us would be hard pressed to define just what that special attraction really is. Like many of you, I have pondered this subject. What is it that attracts us and drives us to participate in our weekly choral migrations?
Is it the competitive spirit, the camaraderie, or may-be the opportunity to become better singers? It’s probably all of these to one degree or another. But maybe there is something even deeper and more mysterious uniting us in harmony. Maybe we are ‘ad-dicted’ to choral singing as a form of natural sedative. That is the idea presented in a book by Stacy Horn, Imperfect Harmony: Finding Happiness Singing With Others.
The following is an excerpt. Maybe this will help us understand our weekly harmonious migratory urges…
When you sing, musical vibrations move through you, altering your physical and emotional landscape. Group singing, for those who have done it, is the most exhila-rating and transformative of all. It takes something incredibly intimate, a sound that begins inside you, shares it with a roomful of people and it comes back as something even more thrilling: harmony. So it’s not surprising that group singing is on the rise. According to Chorus America, 32.5 million adults sing in choirs, up by almost 10 million over the past six years.
As the popularity of group singing grows, science has been hard at work trying to explain why it has such a calming yet energizing effect on people. What re-searchers are beginning to discover is that singing is like an infusion of the perfect tranquilizer, the kind that
both soothes your nerves and elevates your spirits.
The elation may come from endorphins, a hormone released by singing, which is associated with feelings of pleasure. Or it might be from oxytocin, another hor-mone released during singing, which has been found to alleviate anxiety and stress. Oxytocin also enhances feelings of trust and bonding, which may explain why still more studies have found that singing reduces feel-ings of depression and loneliness. A very recent study even attempts to make the case that “music evolved as a tool of social living,” and that the pleasure that comes from singing together is our evolutionary reward for coming together cooperatively, instead of hiding alone, every cave-dweller for him or herself.
The benefits of singing regularly seem to be cumulative. In one study, singers were found to have lower levels of cortisol, indicating lower stress. A very preliminary investigation suggesting that our heart rates may sync up during group singing could also explain why singing together sometimes feels like a guided group medita-tion. Study after study has found that singing relieves anxiety and contributes to quality of life.
It turns out you don’t even have to be a good singer to reap the rewards. According to one 2005 study, group singing “can produce satisfying and therapeutic sen-sations even when the sound produced by the vocal instrument is of mediocre quality.”
OK Heralds, see you next week! And let’s get high on harmony!

Check with the Angels at the next rehearsal. We collect all left behind items in hopes you’ll retrieve them sooner or later!
Almost all that was lost at the Christmas shows has been found! There were several items of clothing that have been
returned to their rightful owners, with the exception of a pair of shoes awaiting their reunion. There is one more item left unspoken for. It was used for a water cooley at the USF
show by one of you fabulously tuned dudes. I will bring it to rehearsal next week and give you one more shot at collecting it before I turn it in to my very own wine cooley! ;) ~Roxanne

Thank you HERALDS OF HARMONY Christmas Show Volunteers !!!
You as a volunteer helped make the Christmas Shows a great suc-cess! For the first time since we have been doing all these duties for the Heralds, we had almost enough volunteers on show day. Some of you were here for the first time as a volunteer and we hope you will consider helping with future Heralds events. Every-one’s part of this team effort is important and contributes to a fun day the volunteers can enjoy too. We are immensely grateful for each and every effort from you … our Heralds “Angels.” We ap-preciate you being with us, and we know the Heralds appreciate everything done to help host a very successful show day because you were there in support of their performances. We also hope each of you enjoyed interaction with the patrons, guest perform-ers and our own handsome, talented Heralds of Harmony!
A few of you we did not see before you departed. We are sorry we didn’t get to say good-bye. We hope you enjoyed the Heralds of Harmony shows as much as we did. We look forward to seeing you real soon. From our hearts and homes to yours, we hope you had a very Merry Christmas.
Again, thank you for volunteering and taking time to be part of the team!

PUN OF THE MONTH:Jokes about German sausage are

Don’t you just hate it when someone comes up to you and ‘gives’ you an idea so obvious that you should have thought of it. That happened the other day and I am still stoked about it. This guy suggested, “Why don’t you take some time at rehearsal and go over the basics of our web site?” Stuff like the music function, calendar planning, keeping your profile current, and other simple stuff like that. He also said, “We have the facilities at the rehearsal hall that even facilitate this instruction; such as a large drop-down screen, a projection device, and a computer link to the site.”
I felt pretty stupid when I said ‘good idea’. We have been using this site for almost 2½ years, so maybe a little education would be appropriate. So I said that I would get that done.
In the near future, we will take 20 to 30 minutes from a rehearsal and go over the basic functions of the web site as Tony suggested.

To the Heralds of Harmony and their incredible Director, Tony De Rosa.
This is just to express my appreciation to all of you for the magnificent Christmas program. I believe it was the finest you have ever done and Ido believe I have heard them all. In my opinion, it was the finest perfor-mance of vocal ensemble that I’ve heard in my entirelife. I am now 88 years old and my world has been the world of music since I was 17, so I do believe I have heard the best from all over and I sincerely believe this is was truly an outstanding performance. In addition to the excellent chorus, the MAXQ quartet was wonder-ful in all of their numbers. Most particularly was the number that they came down to such a quiet point and then stopped. At that point I do believe that everyone in the audience held their breath for that same mo-ment until you resumed with a mighty ending. It was an incredible and awesome experience. Tony’s daugh-ter also added a great deal to the program and has definitely blossomed into a very confident performer and it was fun to see his son again. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and, as always, a great way to start our Christmas season.
I am enclosing a check for your organization because I most definitely want to“Keep America Singing,“ and I think nobody does it better than you all.
Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year!

From the PresidentDave Roberts
Dear Heralds,
What a great time at the Christmas shows, not A level yet, but sung much better than most choruses could EVER hope for. It was very special occasion for me. As you many of you know, on December 11th I celebrated my 85th year of what I consider
a life full of many blessings, musically and otherwise. Being a member of the Heralds Of Harmony I include among the best.
For some time my recordings have shown me that I am not able to keep up to the standards that are needed for an A chorus. I know what I should sing, but it doesn’t always come out that way. Unlike good cheese, I don’t expect it to improve with more age. I
have decided it is time to retire from being a singing Herald for the benefit of all concerned.
This is not an easy decision for me, for I have loved every rehearsal and every sing out. You have all been very kind since my return from Maine. However, I know it is time.
I hope you all understand that the music leadership you have under Tony is the best. I urge each of you to examine your product and your potential. Be all that it takes to take the Heralds Of Harmony to the A chorus level. I wish I could.
I stand ready to help in any way I can in the future. Judy intends to stay with the projects she has committed to, and maybe more. Time will tell.
Best wishes to each of you, your families, and of course to the HERALDS OF HARMONY.
It’s not just great to be a barbershopper.... It’s Great To Be A Herald Under Tony DeRosa!
Tom Williams, Co-Baritone Section Leader
Wow! We just had our first Board Meeting of the year and was it something. The plan of activities for the entire year was completed, the cost of those activities was estimated and a budget is now in place to support the organization. Now, comes the fun of getting to do them.
The Music Team will be providing four or five new songs to be introduced at our annual show. Double fun for us is learning these new song along with using Tony’s knowledge in helping us sing better and better and then we presenting them to our audience. Additionally, three or four new songs will be added to our Christmas repertoire. Yes, add Spring and Fall competition, just to check in, and see how we are doing. This is exciting stuff.
The Membership guys are not going to be outdone by any other team. They plan for more and more events to attract new singers and have planned a membership event each month. Don’t read this as a ‘guest night’ each month, but an event that reaches
out to our new community and to new areas that we’ve never tried to recruit and to offer something for the young folks at our local universities. We are going to grow this chorus!
And the Money folks – these guys will provide the funding fuel that we will need; such as how to sell-out our shows, a huge drive for program ads in our show programs, a couple more outside performances to go along with the ones we already have, strong competition for grants and donations, and a record-breaking Singing Valentines Program. Yes, “there’s gold in them thar hills” in Tampa and “we’re gonna git it.”
What do each of us need to do? Just commit. Commit to being the best we can be. Sincerely buying in to what Tony tells us to do. Commit to it, retain it, and fill your square as a member of the Heralds of Harmony.

I know you don’t want to hear about problems, especially from the chapter historian, but each year at this time this problem comes up. What do you save as a historical content for 2013? Do you try to ascertain what is really important? Do you just save everything? I really struggle with this every year.
I love to read about our history, at least from what was stored. If you just go to a year of our history and see what was there, is it a disappointment? Is what was stored really cool stuff and you can’t help but smile at the way things were done ‘way back then’? Some of the years were well-preserved and some say ‘no data available’.
Why do historians even care? I really don’t know, but it is addictive. It makes you try to answer why were the Heralds very successful in some years and why were there some years that didn’t seem to have been very exciting. Maybe it was the historian that made it sound exciting. I don’t know.
Well, anyway, it is about time to start the process and I hope that 50 years from now, someone reads the 2013 history, smiles and says, “So that’s how they did that way back then.”
