Principal’s Report Amanda Williams Welcome back to term 4! I hope that all families had an opportunity to recharge their batteries and spend some quality time together. Term 4 looks to be another very busy term with teachers and students learning right up until the 22 nd of December. In the meantime, there will be numerous camps, swimming, a Solar Boat celebration at Science Works and the Recumbent Bike title to defend in Maryborough in week 7. To stay in touch with all the action please have a look at our calendar and put dates in your diary as soon as possible. School Uniform- Hats are back in term 4! We expect all students at Flemington Primary School to wear the school uniform every day. Please ensure that your child is wearing the correct school uniform and hair ties, socks, leggings, hijabs and scarves need to be in the school colours. Uniforms can be purchased at our uniform shop on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings. There are also second hand uniforms. If you require assistance with purchasing the school uniform, please contact one of our office staff who will assist. A wide brimmed school hat is worn in term 4. Please ensure that your child’s uniform and hat are clearly labelled! Curriculum Update At FPS it is important to effectively communicate our curriculum with families. To do this each term a Curriculum Newsletter is sent home to every family and an overview can also be found on the Curriculum Board near the office and on our website. The Curriculum Newsletters will be ready to distribute in the first couple of weeks of term and will also contain all-important dates for a year level. The newsletters outline the Essential Learnings studied this term and are developed and implemented in conjunction with our Numeracy and Literacy consultants. If you have any questions about what is happening with your child’s learning please do not hesitate to make a time to talk to your child’s teacher. Communication We always endeavour to communicate with families in an effective manner. We do this via our InTouch newsletter, which is produced weekly. The newsletter contains a calendar of whole school events, celebration of student work, updates, school council reports and other community information. There are now 2 new notice boards outside The Hub Canteen area and the Prep Learning centre where the InTouch newsletter is also displayed for students and parents to read. At times we also send home specific individualised fliers about certain events. FlexiBuz, an application for your phone, also sends out reminders about events. The Flemington PS website also contains up to date information http://www.flemingtonps.vic.edu.au Teachers communicate learning experiences and reminders specific to your child’s class via Dojo. Welcome to Compass

Compass is a school based management program that is used by many primary and secondary schools across Australia. At FPS, teachers and administrative staff have been using Compass successfully for the last 18 months. Compass is easy to use and where you can find information about your child’s attendance, reports, newsletters, news feeds as well as where parent teacher interview bookings will be managed. Some parents may already be familiar with Compass from using it at other primary or secondary schools. We are very confident that this new system will allow for improved communication and efficiency between Flemington Primary School and our community.

Join thousands of Victorian families for Walk to School 2017!

Get ready, get set for Walk to School 2017!

Flemington Primary School has joined the hundreds of primary schools across Victoria for a fun month of walking, riding and scooting to and from school. By participating, we have a chance to win some great prizes! So every time our local families walks, rides or scoots to and from school during October, you increase our school’s chance of winning!

About Walk to School Every October, VicHealth’s Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school kids and their families to walk, ride or scoot to and from school every day. It’s a great way for the whole family to increase their physical activity levels. Plus, it is a chance to enjoy more time with your kids and meet other local families along the way. Along with the health benefits, it also reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and saves the environment! Part way is okay! If you can’t walk the whole way, why not try parking the car a few blocks from your school and walk, ride or scoot the rest. Last year, more than 144,000 kids and their families took part in the program walking the equivalent of two return trips to the moon and with your families help, we can make 2017 our biggest year yet! There are so many great reasons to participate in Walk to School this October and we’re excited to be part of the fun because getting active is even more fun when we do it together!

Student challenge cards Don’t forget to complete your challenge card each day you walk and also mark yourself off your classroom calendar, once your challenge card is complete hand it into reception. We will then get them to Council so they will go into the draw to win some great prizes. Prizes include

3 x $150 sport voucher

5 x Bounce Essendon pass

5 x $50 Westfield voucher Student poster challenge

Council will be holding a Poster challenge for all participating students. The winning artist will receive a sports store voucher valued at $150.

The poster should show:

students and their friends walking to school

something funny, pretty or interesting that students have seen while walking to or from school

a slogan about why kids should walk to school

if students are too far to walk all the way, their poster could highlight park and walk locations

To enter, students should complete their poster and put it up in a visible position at school, then email [email protected] with their name, phone number, school, a photo of their poster (a photo taken on a phone is fine) and its location. The three most creative designs will be framed, displayed at a Council venue and on Facebook, and three Council staff will choose a winner.

The winning artist will receive a sports store voucher valued at $150.

Decorate your shoes, bikes or scooter

In 2017, we’re encouraging our kids to put their best foot forward by decorating their shoes, bikes or scooters to make Walk to School even more fun. Get involved with us for Walk to School and help your family build healthy habits for life. Visit walktoschool.vic.gov.au for more information. We look forward to seeing you Walk to School! Science News Simon Mathews

Hello Families, Friends and Staff of Flemington Primary School,

It was great to be out on a bush walk yesterday with a grade 3/4 camp activity group and Ms. Amanda and see how much students had learned from their ‘Friend or Foe’ science unit in term 3! I was impressed by discussions on rabbits, ants, caterpillars and millipedes, seed dispersal and a pine trees plantation, and links students made back to their understanding of the flora and fauna as a ‘Friend or Foe’.

In this ever growing and expanding technological age, we can appreciate knowing that science units at FPS are linked with literacy. In term 4 grades are working on the following science units:

Foundation have begun the unit of work ‘Schoolyard Safari’. As the world is teeming with animal life, by observing the features and behaviour of small animals, students glimpse the diversity of animal life. Students explore small animals leading to a better understanding of how their adaptations help them survive in their habitats. Through investigations, students learn how animals move, feed and protect themselves.

Grade 1 and 2 have begun the unit of work ‘All Mixed Up’. As we are surrounded by mixtures such as air we breathe, the food we eat and drink, and our personal grooming products, students learn about materials that don’t mix well, and others that are difficult to separate. Through hands-on investigations, students explore how changing the quantities of materials in a mixture can alter its properties and uses.

Grade 3 and 4 have begun the unit of work ‘Melting Moments’. Through hands-on investigations, students understand the properties of materials and how they change state under different conditions, which can help materials scientists to develop ever more extraordinary products to help improve our quality of life.

Grade 5 and 6 have begun the unit of work ‘Desert Survivors’ in which students to explore some of the physical and behavioural features of desert plants and animals, and to compare them with plants and animals that live in other environments. Through hands-on activities, students investigate how the features of desert plants and animals help them to survive in their own natural environment.

A reminder that the Model Vehicle Solar Challenge race day is Saturday 21st of October at Scienceworks Museum, 2 Booker Street Spotswood.

We anticipate a fantastic day! Doors open at 8:30. Although there is no cost for children participating there will be a cost of $14 for parents, concession and children free. Parking at Science works is $3.

Be prepared for all types of weather so remember the sunhat, block out, water, food, possibly a raincoat. www.modelsolar.org.au I leave you with this fascinating video: ‘Wringing out Water on the ISS - for Science!’ in which Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Chris Hadfield from the International Space Station performs a simple science experiment designed by High School students. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8TssbmY-GM

Kind regards,

Simon Mathews FPS Science Coordinator.
