TRAVEL LEAGUE

WESTMINSTER — We returned to Westminister Lanes after a year away to bowl week six of the league. The doors were opened at 9:00 AM to al-low for a brief meeting prior to start of bowling. Many thanks to Doreen for entering team rosters and facilitating an early bowling start. Owner Mike Ja-coby was also present to wel-come us back to Westminister. The league was very happy to be returning there.

Nancy Soto was our top performer for the day with 203 and 224 games for a 546 se-ries. Nancy had the only 200+ games for the day. Challeng-ing conditions resulted in only three bowlers reporting series over 500. Accompanying Nan-cy with high series were Kim Cato at 528 and Joan Roper at 514. Nice bowling ladies.

The top three team slots are held by Westminister 2 at 13 wins closely followed by Cal Bowl 2 with 12 and West-minister 1 at 11. Grouped in the middle positions are Foun-tain Bowl 1 and Cal Bowl 2 at 10 wins each. Cerritos Lanes 2 has 9 wins, Valley View 2 at 8.5 wins. Next in a tight cluster are Cerritos Lanes 1, Valley View 1, Bowling News and Fountain Bowl 2 with 8 wins each. Rounding out the league are Keystone Lanes with 7.5 wins, Del Rio Lanes at 7 wins and Keystone Lanes 2 at 6 wins.

There will be a memorial service for Betty Phillips on Saturday, October 1st at 1:00 PM, Cal Bowl.

STRIKE ZONE PRO SHOP Has “IT”

by Frank WeilerLAKE ELSINORE - Have

you heard about Vise’s “IT” System? I didn’t until visiting the Strike Zone Pro Shop with-in Trevi Lanes. Darron Peters and Frank Mazeikas called and asked me to come over and test a few bowling balls for free!!! I asked: FOR FREE? They responded: “YEP.” It’s free for any bowler who comes into the pro shop.

I’m a bowling junky and jumped at the opportunity to learn about something new in the industry, and tell BOWL-ING NEWS readers about it.

The IT System allows any bowler to test drive any bowl-ing ball, anytime, for free. The technology can be used by a righty or lefty, can be applied to any manufacturer’s ball, and any weight ball. It al-lows a pro shop to become an everyday DEMO SHOP. You don’t have to wait a year for a demo day.

I tried four balls, one made by Brunswick, Columbia, Eb-onite and Storm. I really liked the Victory Road.

The IT System works by us-ing adjustable, reusable rubber slugs. They are inserted into empty thumb and finger holes. Various spans are easily dupli-cated because of the irregular shape of each slug. For exam-ple, the irregular shape allows the pro shop to insert a thumb slug with the thin side facing the fingers to lengthen a span. When the thumb slug’s thicker side is turned to face the finger holes, the span is shortened. Each thumb slug has four sides and can be used to repli-cate four different spans. With thirty-six different slugs in the system, you get a multitude of possibilities. I recommend you check with your pro shop to find out when they will be getting the IT System.

While at Strike Zone, I was also shown the new MARK IV computerized drill press. It allows a pro shop to perfectly duplicate any set up. The computer eliminates human error. If you want comfort and consistency ask your pro shop to consider the MARK IV. Strike Zone is also using the new Haus Resurfacing Sys-tem. This four thousand dollar marvel can make any ball new again.

I recommend you VISIT YOUR LOCAL PRO SHOP and find out if it has any of these cutting edge bowling technologies. I’m a HAPPY CLAM for having gone to the lake to see Darron and Frank. Not only have I learned some-thing, but I am able to share my findings with you in the BOWLING NEWS.

of glow-in-the-dark cosmic qualifying with 1 in 8 advanc-ing to the finals. The cosmic bowling squad was the largest squad of the tournament and it is returning at the October Madness event. All bowlers in this special squad receive raffle tickets for great prizes. The top bowler in the cosmic squad receives 1 bye in the finals and is guaranteed $200. One of the raffle prizes will put one lucky bowler directly into the Sunday finals. There is no additional cost to bowl the glow-in-the dark squad.

Station Casinos started the Madness Tournaments because it wanted to create events that promoted fun filled compe-tition. Even though there is big prize money this event is all about bowling with your friends and family and hav-ing a good time. Storm Bowl-ing, who is the sponsor of all Madness tournaments, raffles off a ball every squad! These Madness tournaments are for anyone with a league average of 140 to 220.

It is easy to sign up for Oc-tober Madness at Red Rock. Call the tournament office at 1.877.900.6464 and you can register by phone. You can also enter on-line at www.pinaclevents.com and click on the October Madness but-ton. Brochures are available in bowling centers and can be downloaded on the website. Walk-in entries are welcomed but to get the two room nights with your entry you must be one of the first 100 prepaid entries and register by Octo-ber 13th. We hope to see you in Las Vegas October 27-30. We guarantee you will have a great time!

RED ROCKcontinued from page 2 2011 MARKS 5TH ANNIVERSARY

FOR GLOVER MASTERSby Bette Addington

BAKERSFIELD — With the annual Don Glover Masters Scratch Tournament this coming weekend (Oct. 1-2), it is a good time to reflect on what the concept of this event was to the late co-founder, Leon Stroope, and how the event has evolved into what he envisioned.

Returning this year to compete is the Inaugural Glover Masters Champion, PJ Haggerty. Haggerty not only has supported this event year after year and made his mark, but he is a prime example of what Stroope was seeking to come and compete as Haggerty is a former youth bowler who has made a name for himself and he believes in what this event is trying to do for its competitors. In contrast, also returning this year is the 2010 Glover Masters Champion, Jeff Frankos, who also has been quite active bowling since last year’s Glover winning a few local tournaments and recently winning a PBA Senior/Junior Doubles tournament with partner Terry Leong of Nevada.

Both of these bowlers are excellent examples of the types of bowlers who respect a good, scratch event put on by a committee that is truly trying to not only give bowlers a competitive field to compete against but an equal condition to be able to do this on. What Stroope and his co-founder, Tom Smith, had started back 2007, was first to work on a lane condition that would have been similar to the conditions that Don Glover would have bowled on back in the 1960’s. Stroope, Smith and AMF Southwest Lanes’ Head Lane Mechanic, Jim Henson, worked for many weeks coming up with the exclusive Glover pattern that they were satisfied with.

Next came the way the competitors would qualify. They wanted to make it as fair as possible so they came up with holding two qualifying squads on the first day that would take the top ten players from each of these squads. After the second squad was through, these top twenty bowlers would compete to reduce the field down to the Top Ten who return the following day to compete in the Match Game Semi-Finals. And, Stroope also came up with the idea to have the totals from Saturday carry over on Sunday for these nine games of head-to-head Match play. Then the tenth game is a Position round allowing the top five scores to advance to the Step Ladder Final. And, last, but certainly not least, Stroope wanted this event open to youth bowlers as well as adults giving youth bowlers an opportunity to bowl scratch against bowlers they idolized and also gave them a chance to see how they could do.

And lastly, the prize fund and prize payouts. This would always bring a twinkle to Stroope’s eyes as he would tirelessly work with his Glover Committee to go out and get sponsors. The committee started in January of every year having their first meeting and lining the year out. In February, the monthly Glover House Spot Roll-Offs started. This gave AMF Southwest Lanes an opportunity to put out the Glover shot as well as give any interested local bowlers (youth and adult) a chance to come compete against each other on this exclusive pattern and the chance to win. And, winning a monthly House Spot meant this bowler got a free entry into the Glover Masters main event. The House Spots don’t bring in a lot of money for the event, but it keeps the local bowlers aware of its existence and brings more and more people into the realization of what is going on.

The guaranteed first place payout was probably the one thing that drove Stroope the most! If the sponsors would come through, the guaranteed first prize was sealed. That would be the first goal to meet. Once that was done, then the committee would work on ways to raise more funds to add to the prize fund. And, last, the number of competitors that show up would be the final feed into that year’s prize fund. The more bowlers that show up, the more the prize fund as this committee all believe in the concept that all that they could raise through the year would ALL be paid out to that year’s winners. And, even any funds raised on the weekend of the main event would also go straight into that same year’s prize fund. Abso-lutely no money is carried over for the next year. Glover Masters winners are paid that same day!

These were all principles that Stroope believed in and what has been carried out. The participants seem to appreciate them and we are hoping 2011 will be one of the best Glover Master events ever!

DIAMOND BAR — Wel-come everyone to the weekly edition of ABTA news. We returned to Oak Tree for our 1-day event, where 209 en-trants partipated in the fun, in the first of 3-tournament hand-icap special. There was a de-cent shot, and cut scores were fair with the men having +49 and the women had +36. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 female) were Don Eide (+40), D.A. Wright (+34), and Kathy Mc-Collom (+35). Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 50 bowlers making it to the semi-finals.

Our top qualifier for the Men was Roy Li with a +134.For the women it was Dana LeCount with a +100. They will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed over-all draws the Match Series. This time it was worth $602. Li drew a 384. We had one bowler that bowled this score during qualifying, and it was newcomer Anthony Marinez in his first ABTA event. He and his pretty girlfriend Yadi-ra were happily surprised. We will estimate the amount for West Covina at $400. For the 3-6-9 qualifying, it was Daniel Raidy going for the $2,800 pot but he missed on his 1st shot and received $50 consola-tion. The 3/6/9 will be $2,900 at West Covina. There is a

3-6-9 is $2,900 at West Covina$1.400 Reserve pot in store and another 3rd pot.

In our optional doubles, finishing in first were Wai Li and Samson Kong with a 1403 for $120. Finishing second was Jerry Chang and Giang Huynh with 1391 for $100. There was a total of $980 paid out in doubles and 19 paid spots with low to cash of 1312. We had a total of eight new bowlers this week join the ABTA, they were Freddy Zamora, Gilbert Magadia, Anthony Marinez, Scott Ross, Andy Huynh, John Struckman, Kristopher Ramer, and Abraham Quibin.

This would bring us to our semi-finals/ finals at Oak Tree, as we had to be off the lanes early so there would be no match play in this event. We would have a Beat the Board finals which means where you finish is It. In the first game, we would see “Hot Shot” Gi-ang Huynh lead the field with a +80, close behind was Scott Johnson at +70, and in third was Frank Ortega at +54. During our second game, we would see a change in leaders as Kin Sang Chung jumped out in front with a +103, followed by Frankie Ortega at +95, and in third was Ryan Nam at +93. This would bring us to our final game and again we would see changes in the top, with some big games happening. Finish-ing in 5th place for $115 was Ryan Nam with a + 105. Fin-ishing in 4th place with a +117 for $115 was Kin Sang Chung.

Finishing in 3rd place for $200 was Frank Ortega with a +126. Finishing in 2nd place for $500 was Jerry Chang with a +135, and by a mere 2 pins fin-ishing in 1st place for $1,000 + $550 for Cash and Carry for a total of $1,550 was Wai (Roy) Li with a +137 who did it up big at Oak Tree. He had a great day and night there and it is heartwarming to see such a nice man win a title. 0ne of the Good Guys strikes again--) Great bowling Roy! The same to Jerry Chang just two pins back and Frankie”300” Ortega in 3rd only 9 pins back

Our top Li again had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. The pot is maxed out and we have a back-up of $3,500. Our top seed drew a 148. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had 5 bowlers who shot that score, so they will each get $700. They were Ariel Ocampo, Armand Garcia, Chris Ngov, Ricardo Baca, and Rey Josafat. We do have another full back up pot so we will have $3,500 at our next event at West Covina. Big Bucks again!!

Champion Roy Li is from Monterey Par. He used a Lane I Black Panther drilled by Roy at Western Columbia. He is married to Aileen Cheung, aN ABTA Member. He would like to thank his wife and all his friends, Michael, Samson, Tao, Catherine, Ryan, and Wil-son for all their support.

sAturDAy juniOr BOwlErs Our Junior Bowlers have got it all; sportsmanship, camaraderie, determination, en-thusiasm, the desire to win and generous hearts. Did you see the article published last week in the Orange County Register, staring our Junior Bowlers? Go to OCRegister.com\lakeforest and look for Youth bowling league helps local charities. This article is about KIDS HELPING KIDS through donating their allowances and other money they’ve earned by doing neighborhood jobs. The Junior Bowlers will vote (once a month) on which Children’s charity to donate to.hits @ missEs Top male bowler of the week was Don Capobianco with games of 216-204-214 for 634 and for the ladies it was Merly Croox, the league secretary, with a nice 502 series.wED mEgA vEgAs So far PyOP is leading the league by 3 games. Can they hold that lead? Our Own Ed Regehr was high bowler this week with 256-252 for a big 701! Then Chris Solar shot the high game of the night, a big 266 for a 695 series, followed by Seth Leader’s 264 / 694. Better “butter up” the staff if you want to win.tuEsDAy night sCrAtCh ChAllEngE A truE ChAllEngE! Last Tuesday night the 585 Scratch Chal-lenge league started with more fun and more challenges than bowlers have had since “The Good Old Days of the 70’s” The league is bowling on completely flat (no help Lanes) oil pattern. That’s right, no crown, and no Christmas tree. This round started on the 40 ft. pattern. Each round is six weeks long. The pattern will not change, just the length of the pattern. First round is 40 ft., second round 28 ft., third round 44 ft, fourth round 32 ft. fifth round 36 ft..Ten teams floored and 4 more are welcome to the ultimate challenge. Are you up for it or are you too spoiled with the lanes of today?????? If making shots and making spares are what you enjoy, then come down and join us. Now on to the scoring; High team series for the week was Team #1 with 569, High Individual series was 554 by Ed Regehr and high game of 214 was shot by Steve Zimmerman. slOts OF Fun Do Better is leading the league by ½ pt and there is only a 5 ½ pt spread from the first team to the 6th place team, with only one week to go. Now that’s a close league. Joe Petrella must be fighting for first place because he scored like a man hungry to win. Joe’s games were 279-269-223 for a whopping 771 series. Mike Deliberto also shot a 279 game and a 697 series and Tim Rietkerk shot 675, Greg Goldstein 672 and Mike Francis 645. Chrissy Gideon was high for the ladies with 206 / 522.nFl sCrAtCh triO LET’S START WITH THE LADIES THIS WEEK, SHALL WE? Michelle McKovich shot 247-237-215 for a great 699 series! BOWLING NEWSSeptember 29, 2011 Page 11

COVINA — Hello again to the JAT Farm Club tournament update. Our last tournament was held at Brunswick Covina Lanes with 33 bowlers in attendance, a very nice turnout. Among those we would like to welcomed the new bowlers to our tournament club. Now if you just looked at the photo(s), to determine the winner, you’d better read on, it’s misleading. We want to thank the staff and management of Brunswick Covina for facilitating an excellent day.

The large turnout helped increase the scholarship payout for the top five bowlers. More importantly, the large field allowed for a second round cut of 16. The qualifying round started the day off on the right foot. The bowlers looked good and some very nice scores were posted up. The big shooter during qualify-ing was Valerie Riggin. In five qualifying games, Valerie put up reportable scores (220 or more) of 267-224-237-266-257. Spen-cer Van Rijsbergen put up the high game of 276, for the qualify-ing round. We also had big scores from Matt Miller 267-225, Baujee Harlan 265, and Bianca Taylor 256-264 to round out the super scores. Great bowling you guys!

But wait, there’s more from the qualifying round. We found Tyler Schaap with 259, Ashley Dunn 255-258, Kyle Duster 255-244-233, John Struckman 223-225-237, Treven Goldsmith 227-223-234, Chelsea Houston 233, Michael Ma 225, Matthew Felix 225, and Brittany Kolatzny 224. Whew, what a list – this is the Farm Club, right? Riggin led the field at plus 251 and a mere minus 66 was the last to advance.

In the match play round, the high scoring continued. We have Miller 268, Duster 267, Dunn 262-277, Taylor 258-254-238, Harlan 254, Goldsmith 246-225, Karlie Loop 244-231, Christian Borao 241, Riggin 232, Ma 222-224-232, Justine Adams 232, Struckman 225-227, and Van Rijsbergen 223. The biggest jump in match play was by Ma moving up six positions. Loop had a four position jump, but the two the mattered the most was with Goldsmith and Taylor, both with a four position jump that moved them into the final round.

The finals started out with the 5th seed Struckman (+202) tak-ing on the 4th seed Goldsmith (+248). Now if you been doing your calculation, you may have determined the top three seeds were all ladies. Guys you need to watch out this year! The vet-eran Struckman began his march to the title round by dispersing Goldsmith 230-211. Struckman now faced the 3rd seed Taylor (+283) and decided to disrupt an all-girl photo. He took out Tay-lor 211-183, to then meet the 2nd seed (and always dangerous) Dunn (+297). Knowing that Dunn was even a bigger veteran and hungry for her first title, Struckman jumped out quickly to cushion his lead and never looked back in a 279-209 win.

Now with our tournament almost an hour behind schedule, we at least knew who was going to be in the photo. With Ash-ley’s third place already awarded, we took a moment to release the Executive Director – David Yamauchi, to his other engage-ment (his family), as he took the photo posted early. With that business behind us, Struckman had worked his way into the final match against top seed Riggin (+353). With friendship put aside, Riggin had seen enough and with two quick games, 237-214 and 203-188, put Struckman down for her first JAT Farm Club title. Congratulations Valerie.

There you have it, a big day and looking for an even bigger day at our next tournament. Which is this Sunday at Forest Lanes, in Lake Forest (the “Y” split for you drivers). Check-in begins at 8:15 and the action starts around 9:00. This is an important tournament for you bowlers, as it is our first of three PBA Chal-lenges. The pattern will be posted on the JAT web site Saturday night and the bowler that has the highest total qualifying pins of all three challenges, will be awarded additional scholarship.

Lastly bowlers, please check-in early and have your money/membership card readily available. I have a small commit-ment (called work) that prevents me from being at Forest Lanes. Therefore, Yamo (or a qualified designee) will be running the Farm Club this week. Please help them out by being properly dressed, adding your score sheets correctly, and keeping to my high expectations of sportsmanship. I’ll see you at the following event which will be Brunswick Deer Creek Lanes on October 30th. Have a good week.
