NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

DEAF TEXAN WUKASCH, JR HIT 300-866 AUSTIN—This writer got flash news from friend Ken DeGroff that John Wukasch, Jr. Mont-

gomery, TX emailed he shot games of 278-300-288 for 866 series on Feb. 9, 2011 at AMF Wood-lands, TX. Ken also said John told him that he now has 11th career 800 and 50th career 300. “Wow!” Ken added, “John is a great left-hander like Carl Malucci and he has 3 more 300 than Carl”.

We wait for the certification of Wukasch, Jr.’s 866 before we declare his 866 as the fourth high-est by a deaf or hearing-impaired bowler. That 866 will replace DeGroff’s long standing 865 which was replaced by Denver’s Tony Passarelli’s 888 and then by San Diego’s Robert Ellison’s 878 and later Carl Malucci’s 869. Mark Fisser had a 867 but the league he bowled that in was not certified.

As for Wukasch, Jr.’s 50 perfect games, that is hard for this writer to believe because none of them were reported to him. Granted that after I witnessed his 300 game in the first game of the 2003 National Deaf Master Bowlers tournament’s qualifying round, I asked him how many sanctioned 300 he had. H replied many that he did not count them. So I told him need a specific number before I write down to let the deaf bowling world know. Since that time I never got a number until now.

We assume that his 866 score was bowled in a league that is certified by USBC.

LARRY DANIEL ROLLS 801 AT BRUNSWICK DEER CREEK LANESWe read in last week’s Bowling News weekly Honor Scores box on the front page and caught

the name of Larry Daniel III with 801 at Brunswick Deer Creek Bowl. Our congratulations to Larry for his honor score.

Larry is the deaf son of hearing-impaired Professional Women Bowlers member Laura Lee Daniel who lately is ringing up a lot of 700’s at Brunswick Deer Park Lanes. Larry was taught well by his mother and we guess she is proud of his accomplishment.

Next time we see Larry, we will ask him questions about his 801.

ED ABAKUMOFF HIT 278 (775) 1013 AT BRUNSWICK MORENO VALLEY BOWLMORENO VALLEY—Ed Abakumoff reported that on March 9 in Moreno Valley Scratch Chal-

lenge League at Brunswick Moreno Valley lanes, he had a good night. He rolled games of 278-243-254 (775)-238 for 1013 with the first 3 games clean and the last game spoiled with one split (9-10) open in 7th frame.

Abakumoff as the USDSA Director for bowling is seeking deaf and hearing-impaired bowl-ers to participate in the Deaf Team USA Tryouts for the 2013 Deaflympics. More info later on how to contact him.

A SHOCKER - ONLY 46 TEAMS FOR 75TH GREAT LAKES DEAF AT LAS VEGASLAS VEGAS...This writer could not get complete details in internet in his computer but was

informed by others that the entries were very low in the coming April deaf tournament at Red Rock Bowling Center. There will be only 46 five-man teams for the 75th Anniversary Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association tournament.

Also informed that the women had only 14 teams entered and their tourney at nearby Texas Sta-tion Bowling Center was canceled and moved to accompany the men at Red Rock. The publicity for this event is poor because mostly all were on internet with no mailing. This writer with a low-end browser could not get all the details but will tell more later when he finds out.

NORWALK—How often have you heard bowlers, profes-sionals and amateurs alike, refer to their equipment as “plastic” or “resin”? Better yet, how many times did you hear the word “plastic ball” in the recent ESPN telecast of the PBA Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship.

In point of fact, these are misrepresented and distorted words used to describe bowling balls. The use of the words to describe bowling balls is mistakenly applied not only by uninformed bowlers but also by ball reps on the PBA tour, manufacturers sales reps, pro shop operators who place orders for these balls, and WORST of all, by TV analysts who are supposedly “ in the know”.

Manufacturers classify bowling balls as polyester or urethane. Somewhere, somehow, outside the manufacturing industry, “res-in” and “plastic” surfaced as the proper lingo.

Interestingly, the usage of “plastic” is not only misused by bowlers, but is never corrected by those who should know better, including me. The term “plastic” has been bandied about by pro-fessional bowlers, pro shop operators, bowling writers, sales rep-resentatives, and ball reps on the professional tours. It is improp-erly employed by analysts on television shows who unabashedly refer to a bowler shooting at a 10-pin with a plastic ball.

The word plastic, rather than polyester, has crept into a num-ber of manufacturers’ vernaculars. This is, perhaps, due to the continuous and prolonged use of the word “plastic” among bowl-ing participants.

Before proceeding any further, let’s examine the origin and source of this misinformation. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines resin as “ a synthetic, usually resinous substance, which, when subjected to heat and pressure, can be cast, pressed, extrud-ed, or molded into various shapes.” Again, referring to Mr. Web-ster, synthetic is defined as “compounds produced by chemical reaction in a laboratory as opposed to those of natural origin”.

Furthermore, dictionaries define the plastic as “any of various nonmetallic compounds, synthetically produced, which can be molded or hardened for commercial use.”

Suffice to say, the term “plastic” renders ALL bowling balls as synthetic products. Consequently, “plastic” not only covers polyester balls, but also include urethane. EVERY ball manufac-tured and marketed in the past 50 or 60 years has been formu-lated from a synthetic substance, including many of the so-called rubber balls dating back to the 40’s and 50’s. As a matter of fact, during World War II, when the demand for pure rubber products exceeded the natural output, rubber balls, as well as automobile tires, were created with plastic materials. Hence, the word “syn-thetic” is the most appropriate characterization of any and all

The Fantastic Plastic BallIt’s Time To Correct Misconceptions About The Nature The Equipment We Roll Down The Lanes

by John Jowdybowling balls today. We can say that while all bowling balls are synthetic, some are polyester resin and some are urethane resin.

During the late 50’s, Brunswick and Columbia produced the original synthetic balls in various colors. They were familiarly referred to as “plastic” balls and, although plastic covered a mul-titude of man-made materials, the synthetic substance used by Brunswick and Columbia at that time was, and continues to be polyester resin.

In the late 70’s, AMF revolutionized the bowling ball market with the introduction of the Angle, a ball produced from urethane, one of he most intricate and sophisticated resins on the market. Urethane, a rapid curing resin, is an extremely rigid material, yet possesses unbelievable traction on the lanes. The angle domi-nated the pro tour; that is, until all other manufactures jumped on the urethane bandwagon.

In the late 80’s, Steve Cooper, a former professional bowler from Southern California, produced the Excalibur, a urethane ball concocted with various additives that created an even greater “tacky” feel that helped the ball to increase its grabbing effect on the lanes.

The incredible hooking action and explosiveness of Cooper’s missile sent manufacturers scurrying throughout the country, seeking advice from chemical manufacturers for similar result-ing materials. Cooper’s ball, displaying extraordinary movement and entry to the pocket, earned the nickname of “cheater ball” from professional bowlers. The combined various materials in these type balls have been categorized as “reactive” resins, thus providing bowlers with more sophisticate weapons.

As the years went by, urethane balls have been customized with glass particles and various other adhesive concoctions. Such foreign substances, heretofore banned by USBC, (formerly ABC/WIBC) regulations, have somehow managed to skirt the rules and infiltrate the manufacture of urethane balls. The new ingredients serve to put more “teeth” into the balls as they make contact with the lanes.

At any rate, the terms “resin” and plastic” balls have been technically misleading. Consequently, after so many years of er-roneous expression, it seems reasonable to set the record straight by defining a ball as polyester or urethane.

The proliferation of sophisticated weapons has been bewil-dering, not only for competent professional bowlers, ball reps, and drillers, but more importantly, for amateurs who attempt to emulate PBA players.

While new materials in ball surfaces and sophisticated core placements continue to aid higher-average players, beginners and recreational bowlers can be better served with less potent

equipment. This is particularly advantageous for female bowlers who are afforded the opportunity to choose from a large assort-ment of brilliant colors and weights manufactured from polyester resins.

Most astute pro shop operators prefer to cultivate long-term relationships with their clientele by recommending bowling balls best suited for beginners and less proficient bowlers. Unfortu-nately, a few uncaring drillers attempt to sell this segment of the bowling population pricier, unmanageable equipment in order to net a few extra bucks.

Fortunately, the greatest majority of IBPSIA (International Bowling Pro Shop Instructors Association) operators take great pride in their craft and, rather than seek higher profits, they make the customer’s satisfaction uppermost in the long run. Conse-quently, as suggested in my two books, Bowling Execution, and Bowling Execution, Second Edition, I advise bowlers, serious or recreational, to seek out pro shops displaying the IBPSIA logo. IBPSIA is an organization dedicated to its profession and skill-fully trained to meet bowler’s needs.

Perhaps the only thing most agree on is the employment of a polyester bowling ball (referred to as plastic) when addressing 10-pins or 7- pins. While I am in accord with this philosophy, I further recommend polyester balls for any and ALL single pin conversions.

I further encourage delivering straight shots at all two-pin spares other than 2-8’s, 3-9’s or spares that presents “sleepers”. These are two-pin spares where one pin is directly behind an-other. These spares can be more easily converted with a slight hook into the front pin.

Despite the advantages of modern supercharged balls, bowl-ers noted for their high-revving shots have abandoned urethane in favor of polyester balls when lanes dry out and present uncon-trollable conditions. However, this is more the exception than the rule.

When should less proficient bowlers consider urethane equip-ment? These are two requisites that bowlers must abide by:1.They must be able to approach the foul line in proper balance.2.They must develop a swing that enables them to deliver the ball freely with proper direction.

These are the initial steps for bowlers to advance their skills. If they can master these two factors, they will be prepared to progress to the more sophisticated tools of the trade.

Additionally, they and all participants in our great game, should be able to distinguish the two most underused words in bowling vernacular, POLYESTER and URETHANE from the misused words, plastic and resin.

SAN DIMAS — We re-turned to Chaparral this past weekend and had a very nice turnout of 245 entries in a two-day event. We saw a tough shot this week that kept the cut scores low. They were a +32 for the men and +11 for the women on Saturday and + 40 for the men and +10 for the women on Sunday. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men) were Pablo Castro (+31) and Frank Menchaca (+23). That would give us 58 bowl-ers making it to the semi-finals this week.

Our top qualifier for the Men was Frank Frias with a +146. For the women it was Ada Wong with a +39. Each will get a paid entry into a fu-ture regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed overall draws the Match Series, and this week it was worth $1,350. The top seed drew a 636 and we had no bowlers this week match that score, so it would be a carried over to next week. Next week at Friendly Hills Lanes, we will estimate the Match Series at $1,850. For the 3-6-9 qualifying this week, we had Je Je Gabriel and Alvin Francisco. Both missed in the 2nd round (Yes Round 2) so they will split the $50 consola-tion. We will add another $100 at Friendly Hills Lanes giving us a total of $1,700.

This week our optional doubles had a father/son duo (The Reece Gang) finish in first. Danny Reece Sr and Dan-ny Reece Jr finishing first with a 1399 for $150. Finishing second was Minh Dang and Victor Paolucci with 1343 for $130. We had a total of $1,180 paid out in doubles with low to cash of 1286.

Suase in his first ABTA win at Chaparral Lanes - Three of the nicest guys in our Organization finished 1-2-3 as Shawn Suase wins his first ABTA Title in fine fashion at Chaparral Lanes in a stel-lar performance. (L-R) are pictured Ken Morris (3rd), William Garrett (Runner up), Shawn Suase (champion ) $1,525, his Father ABTA Member and past Champion Roland Suase, and Bob Smith ABTA Tournament Director.

Shaun Suase Wins His 1st ABTA at Chaparral“Iron Mike” Benavides Hits Match Game for $3,500

Match Series estimate of $1,850 • Match Game estimate of $2,700 • 3-6-9 is $1,700 ABTA Returns to Friendly Hills Lanes this weekend

Special Bonus Handicap Event at Friendly HillsIn the semis this week,

Shaun Suase bowled a big sec-ond game to capture the lead with a +156, to sit out and bowl for the title. In second place, William Garrett finished with a +120 to sit out the first round and come in during the 2nd round. It took a +27 for the men and a -9 for the wom-en to make the top 16.

Shawn, our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the match game worth $3,500. Shaun drew a 211. And Guess what? We had 1 person who bowled that score and that was Michael Benavides. He bowled that in his final game during semis. We did start a back up pot, so we will estimate the pot to be $2,700 at Friendly Hills Lanes. This week we had four new bowlers joined us. Let us welcome these new bowlers to the club, David Wickey, Phil Nash, Matthew Herrera, and Thomas Arguelles.

This would bring us to our Match Play finals. In the first round the seven losers were (welcome Back) Temira Lind-sley, Cecilia Lung, Donovan Chung, Michael Benavides, Ruben Gonzales, Clemente Guajardo, and Patricia Lin. They would receive checks of $105 each. In the second round, the losers were Rich-ard Aquino, Steve Benavente, Chris Kelly, and Paul Bunya. Each would get checks of $112.50. This would get us down to the final five bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $50 (George Covarrubias) to a high of $75 (Nghiem Tran) depending on who would win. In this round we saw Ken Mor-ris (9th seed) bowling Nghiem

Tran (4th seed). In this match, Ken would get the better of Nghiem with a 232 to 200 fin-ish. In the other match we saw George Covarrubias (6th seed) bowling William Garrett (2nd seed). In this match, William wins out in a 203 to 160 finish. George and Nghiem finished 4th and 5th getting checks for $120 each. Our semi-final match was all set now, and it would be bowled on 39 and 40 this week and pit our 2nd seed against our 9th seed. In our horses this week we would see William paying $53 and Ken paying $60 if they would win their match. In this match, Ken struggled to find his shot, and William made an early ball change to find his. William would carry strikes in the 6th and 8th frames that would seal the victory for him. William would finish with a 188/211 to 149/179. That would give Wil-liam the victory and for those lucky “investors” that had William as a horse, he paid $53. Ken finished 3rd and re-ceived $200.

The title game was set and bowled on lanes 45 and 46 this week. Shaun being the top seed, elected to begin the match. In the first frame both bowlers struggled with opens. We saw William start with a gutter ball. Shaun would fi-nally get his nerves under control from that point, string-ing strikes from 3rd thru 6th frames to take a lead. William tried but just could not carry and in the end Shaun would finish with a 181/245 to Wil-liam at 167/190 for his 1st ABTA Championship. Shaun would take home $1,000 for the win, and an additional $425 in Cash and Carry, plus

an additional $100 for wearing his ABTA shirt. This would give him a total of $1,525 for his win. William received $500 for 2nd place.

Champion Shaun Suase is from Los Angeles and used a Hammer drilled at Roy’s Pro Shop. He is single and would like to say thank you to his dad, Roland, for all his support, en-couragement and coaching. Special thanks to the ABTA and staff. A few years ago Bob remembers when Shawn didn’t even have a ball and used a house ball in the ABTA. Bob gave him one of his from his arsenal to have re-drilled, and this young man has come a long way since then for sure. Congrats Shawn.

William Garrett (2nd Place) is from Tarzana and used a Fa-vorite drilled at Pickwick. He is married to a very pretty lady, Glenda and would like to say thank you to his wife for her love and support, along with the ABTA and staff.

Ken Morris (3rd Place) is from Mission Viejo and used a Mission 2.0 drilled by Andy Nieman. He is recently engaged to LeAnn. He would like to say thank you to Andy, the ABTA and staff and of course to his friend William Garrett for showing him how a left-hander should bowl. :_)

This week the weekly ball sponsor winner of a 900 Glob-al Ball was ABTA regular, Carlos Umana, he received the Double Clutch bowling ball. Each time you bowl, you get a free ticket for this prize giv-en away by our Sponsor, 900 Global. This week the raffle winners of ABTA shirts were Lord Ferguson, regular ABTA Entry was Andy Mak and Dan-ny Eguilos, 900 Global 3 Ball roller bag was Richard Bra-jkovic, Memorial Entry was Bret Rose and a Vegas Entry was Jack Trongale. The rest of the results are in the payoff column in this paper.

“Iron Mike” 211 Match Game Winner and $3,500 - ABTA Regular and a nice young gentleman Mike Benavides hit the $3,500 Match game at Chaparral Lanes as his game 211 score was drawn by Finals Hi Qualifier Shawn Suase. Mike is Most deserving. From left is ABTA Director Bobbie Mc Collum, Lucky Mike, his girlfriend and ABTA member Mary Huynh, his cousin Richard Aquino with son Maddix, and Alyssa.

It is a great place. You will like it there. Directions to Friend-ly Hills, take 60 Freeway to Hacienda, South to Colima, then south to Whittier Blvd then left, or 605 Freeway to Whittier go East 3 ½ miles. Until then!

CERRITOS — The Las Ve-gas Travel league ended it’s 53rd consecutive season Monday at Cerritos Lanes. Unfortunately, age and health has dictated that this writer must retire from bowling and league manager. The league will continue into it’s 54th year under the direction of new Vegas league officials Vi Wilson, Betty Phillips and Doris Lewis, long time members. A meeting 10 a.m. Monday, July 18, in Cal Bowl’s conference room will kick off the new season.

The team sweeps preceded the awards luncheon at the Cerri-tos Home Town Buffet with more than 65 members, guests and Del Rio sponsor, Carol Mancici, at-tending.

Carol accepted as Cal Bowl’s Sponsor. Awards were presented to the Cal Bowl #1 champions. The members and the high season individual bowlers were named in our column last week, however we did not reveal the Most Improved Bowler until the luncheon. Nancy Soto raised 12 pins, from 151 to 163 and honorable mention was made for Nan McGill’s 7-pin raise, from 134 to 141.

President Roberta McNaught, who also retired from the league this year, did her usual super job presenting awards and telling some jokes. She will be missed by the league as much as this writer. She still retains her office as sec-retary of the high scoring mixed league on Fridays at Linbrook Bowl and continues her high scor-ing 175 and over average.

After naming and paying off 12 places in the team sweeps, won by Keystone #1, the day concluded with a memorable ceremony for this writer. Roberta presented the most beautiful plaque ever creat-ed, from longtime friends Barbara Bishop and Betty Phillips, to me for services rendered. The words reflected not only the league...but also 60 years of service to bowl-ing. She also presented a cash gift from the entire league, amounting to $350.00, enclosed in a card with messages and signed by league members. Nan McGill made a huge batch of my favorite cookies and there were many other cards with personal messages.

I tried not to cry but tears flowed anyway. There will be one more column to write after the Monday 11 a.m. Vegas singles and doubles. Then I will embark on some projects that my age and health will permit. Like going to the horse races and afternoon movies. Also, I arranged with Car-ol (CBN editor) to keep my Vegas Turtle logo active under a new heading, “Vegas Travel League Memories”, and boy...there’s plen-ty of them.

Las Vegas Singles and Dou-bles: 11 a.m. Monday, March 28 at The Orleans. The charter bus leaves Cal Bowl on Sunday, March 27, at 10 a.m.

JERRY DeYAGER Sets The Pace At

Cal Oaks Bowlby Frank Weiler

MURRIETA — Jerry DeYager is setting a high scor-ing pace at Cal Oaks Bowl. First, he rolled an 807 three game series in his practice league. Then, in three weeks, in his Here For Fun League, Jer-ry bowled 299 one week, 300 another week, and an 825 (289 - 277 - 259) in a third week. After all that, Jerry bowled an 823 (268 - 287 - 268) in his Hi - Rollers League. What’s up? Jerry credits his new Ham-mer Grind ball, drilled by JIM MURTISHAW.

While Jerry continues his hot pace, his ball driller (Jim Murtishaw) rolled a 279 trip-licate (279 - 279 - 279 = 837) in the Hi - Roller League last week. Jerry and Jim would like to thank the BOWLING NEWS for recognizing their scoring accomplishments.

LAKE FOREST — Top of the Morning to you and a Hap-py St Patty’s Day... Let’s start off with a wee bit of legend from the Emerald Isle, shall we? Did you know that there are no female leprechauns’? Nay, you say, but it tis surely true. Leprechauns are rarely seen but recent rumor has it that a few of these pygmy’s have come to Forest Lanes this year because they heard we are serving green beer in honor of St Patty’s Day. They usually take the shape of old men clad in green, with a buckle on their hats, belts and shoes. They smoke pipes and always carry a hammer in one hand and a shoe in the other. If ye be so lucky as to abduct one, they will most likely grant you three wishes for their release. Beware; they are solitary, mischievous crea-tures so it is well advised that you guard your beer.

Did you hear that John Zimmerman picked up the 7- 10 split in the NFL League? That’s the only one reported this year. What an accomplishment to brag about!

In the gil jAy mEn’s w2010 lEAguE this week Lou Johnson shot the high game of 265 and Doug Bowbear shot high series of 603.

In the FriDAy vEgAs 2010 the top four men were Jim Barnes with games of 289 and 267 for an outstanding 745 series, Edward Dantes a terrific 652 series, Robert Villa 258/649 and Lou Dietrich 254/640. For the gals it was Judy Pojar shooting a nice 512 and Sherry Glass 508.

In the FunsEEkErs high for the ladies was Alice Nielsen scoring a super 548 series and for the Gents Jim Wessling was high with an impressive 670 series.

mEgA vEgAs always has some spectacular scores to brag about and the top four men were none other than Sam Hitchcock with a 268 game and 689 series, Scott Ross a 675 series, Keith Kiagge a 265 game and 662 series and Jeff Conklen a hefty 663 series.

Then along came the gals and none other than Laura Conklen gave the better half a close chase with a nice 630 series and our own Irish Lassie, Kathleen Marie Mc Col-lom, shot a 613.

In the EADs 2011 Jason Pel did his part with 601. Neil Northrup got the attention this week in thE FriDAy jACk-POt with a 642 and for the lassies, it was Sue Gioberti who shot a 204 game.

Don’t worry gang, we won’t leave out the lOs AmigOs lEAguE. Top men this week; Per Mortensen 601, and John Onderko a 600. For the ladies; high series of 526 was shot by Donna Miller, followed by Shirley Russell’s 499.

Now let’s give a little attention to the men in the sCrAtCh ChAllEngE, shall we? Top three this week were Sam Hitchcock with 691, Chris Grulke with 687 and George Abrahams with 659.

The Thursday mEgA vEgAs is still complimenting Don Fontanilla for a 258 game and 659 series and Chuck An-derson got a few pats on the back for a nice 623 as did Cruz Baeza when he shot 613.

slOts OF Fun highest scores for the lads were Ste-ven Zimmerma 707, Jim Russe;; 704,David Beriotti 695, and Nick Benenah 682. For the lassies it was Gayle Varta-nian 585 and Missy Manning 514.

In the juniOr lEAguE; Amber Wyrick beat her av-erage all three games this week and we are very proud of her since this is her first league. Adam Irvine beat his average by 75 pins and Billy Shilling beat his average all three games. The “Beat Kevin” challenge was won by Riley Sullivan in the third game when he shot a great 196. But no one came close the first game when Kevin Monroe shot a 233 and ended up with a 597 series.

Congratulations to two of our little bowlers, Trinity Pinkney and Ethan Knoll, who just graduated from the BumPEr lEAguE to the juniOr lEAguE.

WINNETKA — Hi. Today is the day of the color green. So that means it’s St. Patrick’s Day.
