ABS CBN FIRST KAPAMILYA BOWLING TOURNAMENT AT CERRITOS LANES CERRITOS — We are pleased to invite all the Cali- fornian Bowlers to join us on the opening ceremonies and this year’s Kapamilya Bowl- ing Tournament of ABS CBN Foundation International. The opening ceremonies will be held on August 4, 8:30 am, at Cerritos Lanes, 18811 Car- menita Road, Cerritos, CA 90703. Thereafter, the squad games will follow with three squads time at 9:00-AM, 1:00- PM and 5:00-PM, for both Saturday and Sunday. ABS CBN Foundation International is one of the largest foundations that sup- port causes in the Philippines and in Filipino communities around the world. This will be the Foundation’s first ever sports fundraising project and it will benefit Bantay Bata (Child Watch), an initiative that addresses the issues of children—child abuse, hunger and nutrition, housing, health, education, etc. This year marks the 10th anniversary of ABS CBN Foundation International. As part of the anniversary celebra- tion, a bowling Tournament was born and Lydia Soriano, one of the ABS CBN Foun- dation International Liaison was appointed as to chair this event. As a bowling enthu- siast and a resident of Cerritos she suggested the creation of this first annual bowling tour- nament in the City of Cerritos. Lydia Soriano believes bowl- ing is one of the more popular sports that people of different ages and in different cultures can appreciate and play. Kapamilya (Family) Bowl- ing Tournament will be a two-day event—August 04 and August 05, 2012. We are hoping for the full support and participation of majority of the bowlers from different cul- tures and most especially ded- icated to FIL AM community in their continuous support of all the ABS CBN projects and programs globally aired every day. During the opening day, City of Cerritos officials’ Mayor Protempore Bruce Barrows and Past Mayor and Councilmember Carol Chen will join the President of the ABS CBN Foundation Inter- national Julio Robbie Fabian to grace the opening of the Bowling Tournament on Au- gust 04. The tournament is be- ing covered by Balitang Amer- ica (News from the U.S.), the highly-rated evening news program of The Filipino Chan- nel, the all-Filipino cable net- work owned by the ABS CBN continued on page 7 LAKEWOOD — About 3 years ago I had an idea for a tournament. It rolled around in the ole “noodle” ‘til I had to talk to someone about it. So I told Leonard Ruiz at Cal Bowl my crazy desire to have a tournament for ONLY BOWL- ERS THAT HAVE ROLLED A 300 GAME. I think he was shocked, but in a few minutes the light bulbs started to flash. We asked as many “ex- perts” as we could reach. “Have you ever heard of a 300 Tournament?” was the ques- tion of the day. No, No, No were the answers. Now the conversation got serious. I wanted to invite ev- ery bowler in Southern Cali- fornia that had bowled 300! Leonard took the conversa- tion side and suggested a “test” tournament, limited to six cen- ters, Bowlium, Forest, Saddle- back, Keystone, Del Rio and Ken Di Iorio Wins First “300” Tourney At Cal by Carol Mancini Cal for only 300’s shot in the past year. On Saturday, July 28th 26 bowlers hauled out their equip- ment and attacked the pins, hoping to toss another 300 in this sanctioned event. High game of 299 and high four games series of 1044 were shot by Nick Negrete. The side- pot action was fierce and profitable. Half of the field earned back their en- try fee of $25.00 — one way or the other. Ken Di Iorio bowled great in the stepladder finals beating Gabriel Martinez 277 to 224, and marched over Gerald Wil- liams 237 to 182. Ken will receive a custom 300 champion ring, plus an entry into the Cal Bowl Open and $300.00. (At this writing, I don’t know how much cash he won over all.) Thank you guys, you are all great champions. Thank you Leonard Ruiz for conduct- ing all facets from inviting the qualifiers, to handing out the cash. Thousands of kids around the Southland are given a gener- ous workout in each sport. And who knows, maybe a future Olympian caught the bug! On Monday, Del Rio Lanes hosted 160 kids for bowling and lunch. Cal Bowl “Get Fit With The Clippers” by Carol Mancini opened the door to 270 eager “athletes’’ on Tuesday. On Wednesday, August 1, another 240 pin hunters got a taste of our sport. About 1/4 of the kids said they had bowled be- fore, and they liked it better than most sports. Over 90 volunteer “coach- es” showed the kids proper lane etiquette, finger position, foul line boundaries and rest- room locations! A Great Pro- gram!!! Thanks to the volun- teers — A great success.

FEDERAL WAY, WA…Due to the widespread economic slump, Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling Association 71st annual tournament hosted by Tacoma Bowling Association for the Deaf drew 14 teams of foursomes for its team event in Secoma Lanes at Federal Way, WA last May 25-27.

The number is lowest in its history since 14 teams were at Vancouver, WA. in 1956.There were 28 doubles entries, 56 singles and 54 entries in all-events. Also the two special

events, the Deaf Masters drew 31 entries as the lowest since 24 at Spokane, WA. and the Deaf Senior Masters had new record lowest 7 seniors entries. The regular tournament turned out to be dominated by the deaf Hawaiians as some of them found their trip to the mainland worthwhile.

baZan & ho helP hawaII Four–0 To TeaM TITle With only 14 teams competing for the title and four places prizes, PCDBA secretary-treasurer

Ed Bazan CA and Deaf Team USA member Gene Takinen, AZ filled in with Hawaiians Nicholas Rivera and Vuong Ho and their team, Hawaii Four-0 scored 723-767-807(event high team game) for high team series 2297 plus 402 handicap 2699 total to win Team Title. Bazan rolled 209-214-201 for 624 and Ho had over his average games of 184-174-187/545 while Rivera had 547 and Takinen added (237) 581. The team split $800 first place prize into $200 each.

Second place $400 went to the host team Northwest Venom led by PCDBA Vice-President Tim Estes with 246-226-181/653 and team scored 714-790-664 for 2168 plus 495 handicap/ 2663 total. Third place $200 went to Riverside/SF which included PCDBA President Howard Sultan on the team, led by Stan Booth with (225) 582 in the team’s 676-776-703 for 2155 plus 480 handicap/2635 total. The 4th place $135 was taken by The Four Goofs led by Charles Martin with 544 in the team’s 1923 plus 678 handicap / 2601.

George Low, AZ rolled the event bowler high game 255 and added 178-223 for high top series of 657 but his team, In Memory of Gerald Kelly finished in 8th place.

There were no big scores in the singles event and the Hawaiian Vuong Ho continued to bowl over his average with games of 182-189-206 for 557 plus his 195 handicap/ 772 to add the singles title with his team title. Ho also got the $200 prize.

A pair of Washington bowlers took 2nd and 3rd places. Louis DiCapua rolled 215-213-189 for 617 plus 138 handicap/ 755 to add 2nd place $100 prize along with his 2nd place team prize. Ernie Shinn hit 176-214-204 for 594 plus 141 handicap/ 735 to take 9rd place $90 prize.

Hawaiian newcomer Darren Neizman rolled the event’s high series 621 with his 225183-213 but his low 57 handicap/ 678 score placed him 14th and last in the money $50. The event’s high game of 233 was tossed by David Carson, ( ) who finished in tie for 29th place with his

641 total with handicap.

its host star bowler Tim Estes making ten strikes in row in his third game. But all died down when one pin refused to fall on his 11th ball which Estes spared for the high game of 289. Estes finished with the event’s high 729 series but placed 3rd in doubles with Andreas Rayford.

Veteran Hawaiian Ralph Collier and a newcomer Darren Neizman were made for each other as doubles partners as they captured the doubles title with 1523. Collier rolled 245-216-209 for 670 and Neizman added 258-258-205 for 721 for the event’s high doubles game of 503 and 474-414 for high doubles series of 1391 plus 132 handicap. They split the $400 prize into $200 each. This is Neizman’s first PCDBA title and Collier’s 2nd doubles title as he won his first in 2006 with Barrett Lee, LV.

Jerry deyaGer is “ToP doG”by Frank Weiler

MURRIETA — The Cal Oak’s kennel is loaded with some tough competitors.

Competitors with more bite than bark. We have big dogs, bad dogs, bold dogs and ugly dogs. There aren’t many pups in this pound and none in the Scratch 430 Doubles League. If you want to compete on Thursday night you better be big, or bad, or bold, or ugly. If not, your partner better be. The competition isn’t dog eat dog, but the muzzles are off. Pooches need not apply.

Jerry DeYager may not be ugly, but he sure is big, a little bad, and bold when it comes to a challenge. He loves to take on the best Cal Oaks has to offer. No “dog” dare stand in his path to vic-tory. He is an intimidator, but even more he is a frustrater. He is a psychoverbalist. A verbose competitor who gets his opponents to think negatively. Subtle remarks, selective silence, and facial expressions are all part of this kennel creatures craftiness.

Sometimes I wonder if Jerry has telepathical powers akin to those of Madame Blavatsky or Zoltar. I’ve never seen him bend a fork with his mind but I sure have seen him get opponents to miss corner pins. Call it what you want, but I say it’s mental telepathy or maybe telekinetics. Then again it may just be some form of animal magnetism, or canine consciousness.

Anyway, Jerry is now “TOP DOG.” His 230 average is tops in Cal Oak’s summer scratch leagues. Our hardest thrower now leads the late night strike parade.

Jerry’s scoring pace is keeping his K-9 Crew in contention for a wild card playoff spot. Last summer Jerry “chukked” (lofted) his way to the league title and hopes to repeat. Teammate LEO BROWN is improving just in time for a playoff run, with Jerry teaching this pup some new tricks.

With the league’s final position round fast approaching, the next few weeks are crucial. I wish Jerry and Leo the best. How-ever, since I’m competing against those hounds, I’m not throw-ing them any bones or doggy biscuits.

The animals at Cal Oaks are grateful to the BOWLING NEWS for barking up our tree.

Gary Ford remembered

by Carol Mancini NORWALK — In the

1960’s bowling was boom-ing! The three powers (in the 3 largest centers) in San Diego were Ken Hubbard at Claire-mont, Nick Mancini at Park-way Bowl and Gary Ford at University Lanes.

When University Lanes closed, Gary moved north. Forest Lanes had just been built and Gary became their “Paul Bunyan”. A classy man in a classy center. Gary was a consultant to Gable House when A.C. Delco sponsored the P.B.A. Tour stop there in the early 80’s.

Moving to Bowling Square in the 90’s was a big change, almost as big as meeting a great gal named Nancy. They soon married and Gary Junior cemented their long marriage.

Nancy has a twin sister Nicki who married Gary’s best buddy, Milt Galik. Milt and Gary worked many centers to-gether over the years.

“Thank you, Milt, for call-ing me Monday.”

Gary and family have re-sided in Las Vegas for the last few years. Pancreatic cancer was the demon of death for the grey haired guro of bowling. Gary was 80.

The Perfect Game by Steve Felege hosted by: Carol Mancini

Carol: This week, Steve would like to begin this article by making a brief statement. Take it away, coach.Steve: Thanks Carol. I just want to express my gratitude for the future actions one our readers is about to take. Whoever you are,” Thank you!” from the bottom of my heart!Carol: That made no sense at all! What are you talking about?Steve: One of our readers is going to set in motion a series of events which will finally lead to a true “NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!” Carol: You haven’t been sleeping well, have you?Steve: I’ll sleep better once I know steps are being taken to fulfill the wishes of Robin Buckman, and millions of other bowlers across the nation who have spent countless hours on the lanes, hoping that someday, the “powers that be” would establish a tournament format which would create a playoff system resulting in state champions going head-to-head with the final result be-ing the crowning of a National Champion!Carol: That’s the most beautiful run-on sentence I’ve ever read! Who’s Robin Buckman?Steve: She’s a woman that finally wrote an article stating the need for such a tournament. It ran in the July issue of The Bowlers Journal. There are national championships for other amateur sports, but she pointed out that no such event/award exists for the most popular one, and there ought to be! I salute you Ms. Buckman!Carol: So what makes you think one of our readers is going to make it happen?Steve: Californians are famous for making things happen. You’ve had more “movers and shak-ers” here than any place on earth. Men like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and St. Andreas Fault to name just a few. To harvest fruit, you have to plant a seed. California is a big, fertile field and this article is a seed. Let’s hope there is another Mr. Fault out there willing to pick up this cause and help it take root. Carol: Just a minute Stevo... California has great WOMEN leaders too. Linda Johnson is our Cali-fornia USBC President! I’m going to put a bug in her ear about this National Champion idea. Imagine!! Every state team champion getting a paid entry (and travel expences) into a National Tournament. Arlington Texas would be a good place. Wonder what organization would take up the Gauntlet on this one? USBC? Bowling Proprietors? Bowling Writers? Storm? Brunswick? Murrey International? I can’t imagine any state NOT wanting to participate. HEY! Is anybody listening?

THE REMATCHCarol: Last week I challenged you to answer six bowling questions in a minute and you failed, some would say, “Miserably!”Steve: You mean someone like Dean?Carol: Dean, Lillian, me, our readers........Steve: I get the picture.Carol: So you demanded a rematch, double or nothing on your pay. Correct?

Carol: Next question? That wasn’t part of.....oh! So, that’s how you want to play?Steve: You betcha! That’s number two. Next question.Carol: Dean! He’s on to us! Start that timer!Dean: I started it early, just like you told me to!Carol: Never mind what Dean just said!

Carol: Are left-handed bowlers better than right-handed bowlers?Steve: There is no difference. Either can throw strikes. Next question!Carol: Is it possible that some day, someone will average 300?Steve: Yes. If a person who has never bowled before picks up a ball, rolls twelve strikes in a row, and never bowls again, that person will have a lifetime average of 300. It’s unlikely, but you only asked if it was possible. Next question. Carol: What is the biggest mistake a bowler can make?Steve: Taking themselves too seriously. That’s five. Last question, please.Carol: “Tennis elbow” is a common injury associated with our sport. What is the cure?Steve: Carol, the treatment of “tennis elbow” is a medical issue and I’m not qualified to dispense medical advice. You know that!Carol: Dean, let the record show that Steve has refused to answer question number six.Steve: I’m not refusing, I’m saying it would be unethical for.........Timer: Bleeeeeeep!Carol: OOOH, so close! Steve: But......Carol: No “Buts”. A deal’s a deal. Care for another rematch?Steve: I’ll think about it. See you next week.Dean: Poor guy! He has no idea who he’s up against, does he? Carol: Nope, but he’s learning fast!

CHINO HILLS — We ven-tured to Chaparral 300 for the first time at this fine Beauti-ful new bowling center. We saw 218 entries come out on Saturday and bowl on a fairly nice shot. The cut scores were +113 for the men and +83 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 female) were Jesse Boquio +99, Tim Austin +92, and Car-la Sanchez +78. Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need be a young 55. That would give us 51 bowlers making it to the semi-finals. They have a big cosmic program so it is a Beat the Board Finals “where You finish is where You” stand in the 3 games.

Our top qualifier for the Men was Bedell Vasquez with a +213 in qualifying rounds and for the women it was Lu-cia Collier with a +178. They will get a paid entry into a fu-ture regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed overall draws the Match Series, and this time it was worth $1,814. Bedell drew a 485. We had one bowler that bowled this score and it was Michael Le-ung during the 6 pm squad. He and family were happy to say the least. We will estimate the Match Series at $450 at Friendly Hills. The last bowler for the 3-6-9 roll-off was a Hot Michael Davis and he missed on his second shot. He got a consolation of $50. It will be $1,200 at Friendly Hills Sat-urday.

In our optional doubles,

ronnie sanchez wins his second Title in our First Trip to new chaparral 300

Match Game carries over again $3,500 Michael leung Turns 485 into $1,814 Match series

3-6-9 will be $1,200 at Friendly hills and Match series estimated at $450abTa at Friendly hills for 3rd of 4 week hdcP specials

finishing in first were Faye Josafat and Rey Josafat with a 1510 for $120. Finishing in second was Steve Brode and Mike Foster with a 1490 for $100. There was a total of $850 paid out in doubles and 15 paid spots with low to cash of 1421.

That would bring us to our Beat the Board finals with 51 bowlers advancing and after game one, the top five bowl-ers were Bedell Vasquez in 5th place with a +61, Ronald San-chez in 4th place with a +62, Dana LeCount in 3rd place with a +74, in 2nd place was Elvin Godoy with a +77, and leader was Mike Foster with a +99. Winning the first game side-pot was Elvin Godoy with a 277. After the second game of bowling, we would see changes in the top 5, with 5th place belonging to Elvin Godoy with a +86, in 4th place now was Sonia Coronado with a +91. In 3rd place was Pat-rick Snyder with a +99, in 2nd place was Mike Foster with a +131 and now leading the pack with a +159 was Ronald Sanchez. He did this with a big 297 which also won the second game sidepot.

That would bring us to the 3rd and final game of semi-finals, and again we would see changes in the top 5 bowlers. Finishing in 5th place was Korng Ngow with a +136 for $115, in 4th place was Ken Morris with a +142 (he also won the 3rd game side pot) for $115. Finishing in 3rd place was Mike Foster for $200

with a +146. Finishing in 2nd place with a +154 for $500 was pretty Dana LeCount, and finishing in 1st place was Ron-nie Sanchez with a +204. He took Cash and Carry for a total of $1,850, this was his second ABTA Championship.

The rest of the top 16 field finished as follows, in sixth thru ninth place for $107.50 were Tom Mazzulla, Greg Kokanour, Sonia Coronado, and Rey Josafat. Finishing in tenth thru sixteenth place for $100 were Elvin Godoy, Be-dell Vasquez, Patrick Snyder, Stan Por, Mark Andrews, Jun Reyes, and Carla Sanchez. All other cashers are listed on the payoff sheet

Champion Ronald Sanchez is from Cerritos and after his shift at AMF Cerritos Lanes, he hustled on out to the New Chaparral 300 to compete and competed he surely did!! He used a Virtual Energy (a gift from Greg Velarde) drilled by Mike Wahl. He dedicated the win to his late Uncle Bart Sanchez. (One of our Regu-lar Dearest Members, who passed away in June.) Also a big thank you to Greg Velarde for the ball, his “good luck charm” his nephew Romeo, his brother Rhuel for being there, and his family for all their support, with a special thanks to all who stayed and cheered him on to the victory during the final game, and of course a big thank you to Dad Resty, who could not make it as he was in Las Vegas and thanks to the ABTA for the

Best Tournament to bowl in. The Sanchez family have been #1 ABTA supporters for years with many friends in the club to say the least. Resty is also a Champion and sis Maricris in fact came in 4th in a Las Vegas Event. Better people you can-not find. Congrats again Big Guy!!

Dana LeCount (2nd Place) is from Montclair and used a Clash drilled by her husband Brad. She is married to Brad and they have four children, three boys and one girl. She would like to thank God, Brad, and the children for all their support, along with Chris Sanchez at Dreamers Bowling Supply.

IDLE BOWLING THOUGHTSHow many bowling leagues are unsanctioned? No one

really knows, but every one should care. More sanction fees mean more money in the budget for worthy projects to keep bowlers, create more bowlers, meaning more inter-est in the sport, more business for bowling proprietors and more numbers to present to potential sponsors who then might spend more money in bowling.

...One of the not remembered enough major events in bowling TV history was the $50,000 win of Carolyn Ander-ton in a winner take all match play feature nationally tele-cast by CBS.The answers were Brent Musburger, Phyllis George and Telly Savalas.

...Before Mel Allen took over as the host of the popular Jackpot Bowling TV show the lead announcer was another man of great baseball notice—Leo Durocher.

...Take in a senior pro tournament, national or regional, and more often than not, there will be a sparkling of all time greats who still bowl well and with the same style as ever. “Only one problem,” said one of the veterans. “I roll the ball a lot harder—and it goes slower.”

...Mike Aulby has always followed a simple code, just try to bowl a little better every time you bowl.

...There is always a buzz when star bowlers blow what is considered an easy spare conversion. Too many average bowlers, and some good ones too, have trouble in building confidence in shooting at single pin spares—particularlythe end pins. Top spare shooters advise that on single pin spares, roll the ball faster and straighter.

...You can never tell about lane conditions and what ef-fect they may have. There have been weeks on the national protourTVfinalsfourtopstarsaveragedamere201.Anda week later, with four top stars again, they averagd 262.

...There is no bowling crisis, major or minor, local or na-tional, to which bowling will not respond to with a meeting, a conference or a seminar.

...Records are made to be broken though some can only be tied. But the Johnny Petraglia astounding career mark of at least one national title in the past six decades is one that could stand for a lot of years into forever. One ofthefirsthurdlesistoremainhealthyenoughoverthosemany years.

...No sport brings male or female bowlers closer in com-petitive and social settings better than bowling, for peope of all ages for amazing long times.

...My first heroes in bowlingwereAndyVaripapa, Ju-nie McMahon, Lou Campi, Lindy Faragalli and Marion Ladewig. Who were yours?

...I like the story about the two men, one an ardent but struggling bowler and the other an average working man who each won $5 million in a lottery. When asked what they planned to do with the money, the working man said hewas going to quit his job, spend a lot of time fishingand playing golf and take life easy, living on his new found wealth. The bowler scratched his head, thought a bit, then said, “I guess I’ll just keep bowling in every tournament I can—until the money runs out.”

bowling styles by Robert Ellison

NORWALK — There are numerous bowling styles, but today we will focus on three.

Todays article is on “how to improve bowling” is by watching PBA bowlers, both men and women. There are different avenues to view these bowlers such as online websites like YouTube, or you can even record them straight from the TV and review them at later dates. There are 3 bowling styles which you may notice from PBA bowlers: crankers, tweeners, and strokers.

Crankers essentially means that the bowlers “crank” the ball, and use maximum leverage and high revs on bowling balls. These bowlers tend to have a higher back swing and open shoul-ders at the release point. Also, some crankers would “plant and pull”- meaning they essentionally “plant” the sliding foot, and “pull” the arm into the lane. Crankers throw powerful strikes; however, this comes with drawbacks. Crankers tend to throw a higher number of splits due to the high revs (on bowling ball). Crankers include: Robert Smith, Tommy Jones, and Mark Roth.

Strokers tend to roll the ball at a lesser rev - and release the ball at a smoother pace. Strokers rely on accuracy and consis-tency rather than power. These bowlers tend to win more tourna-ments than the crankers. Strokers have a lower arm swing than the crankers, thus creating lower revs on the bowling balls. The lower revs means less angle entry of the bowling ball into the pocket. Strokers tend to parallel shoulders tend to the foul line. This creates consistency and accurary in the game. Stroker bowl-ers include: Norm Duke, Parker Bohn III, and Pete Weber (he’s more of “power” stroker).

Tweeners fall between crankers and strokers (thus the term

“tween”). Some pro bowlers have a high back swing, but weak wrist position. There are also some tweeners with low back swings but powerful wrist action. These “tweeners” fall in a cat-egory where they are neither crankers or strokers. Tweeners PBA bowlers: Mika Koivuniemi, Brian Voss, and Ritchie Allen.

By watching the pro bowlers you can study the techniques

they use in their bowling style: watch how they walk up to the foul line, balance at the end of the approach, and release of ball. By “visualizing” these bowlers you can work on copying their form which will help with you the approach, swing, and release.

It’s necessary to establish a frame of mind where you can de-

velop form to replicate top notch bowlers. It is also important to have a coach watch/evaluate your bowling. A coach can do a comparison between your form and the form of a pro bowlers-

Until next time- good bowling and keep on striking!
