Old-fashioned lettering, ornaments and colors are back in fashion. Pattern Printing Repeating basic shapes and fonts to draw geometric or floral patterns on packaging for a cohesive and sui generis appearance. For example, Corinne Cosmetics and Kindo Shop use patterns for interest. Customized Shapes To enrich creativity in the industry, designers are customizing the shapes of package designs according to product usage and/or flavor. These can be defined shapes or free style. Renewable Materials Consumers and brands have become environment conscious. Renewable packaging is made with biodegradable materials like wood fiber, shrimp shells, mushrooms or sugarcane to replace harmful polymers. Premiumisation There are two aspects of this: 1) making luxurious or quality items accessible to masses, and 2) adding a personalized touch to the packaging. Premium packaging is quality oriented, affordable and attractive. Industry: milk, fruits and vegetables, beauty, beverages Fact: 7% growth in CAGR of global recyclable packaging materials through 2020 Themed Design It looks like brands are becoming aware of social rights and h oliday celebrations. Skittles designed a black and white packaging for gay pride. Also, Coca-Cola bottle label formed into a Christmas gift ribbon. Corrugated Packing Packaging that can somewhat imitate the shape of an object or be rigid and flexible as and when needed. The conforming cardboard with triangulated perforations idea was first designed by Patrick Sung. Resealable Lid A great option for branding until the product is finished. A resealable label covers the rigid packaging to ensure fresh items don’t go stale. This is an opportunity for brands to make their identity memorable. Typography Intensive Typography isn’t only used to label products, those are in fact the text and font. Typography is being used to create 2D textures and patterns to cover the packaging material of the product. Humanization Adding a human element in design. This can be done by either using photographs of human beings, or by addressing their problems visually by using 2D and 3D design techniques in packaging. Tailor-made Illustrations Everyone wants to look unique. Designers like Steven Harrington play a role here. Custom illustrations are made on packaging to make packaging idiosyncratic, whimsical, or cultural etc. Re-usable Containers Instead of buying a product and throwing away its packaging, brands will switch to making a package design that consumers can re-purpose for decoration, education or entertainment. For example, “the world’s first playable DJ pizza box” by Pizza Hut and Novalia. Licensed Package Designs Designing themed packaging adds value to your product and attracts all those fans that reside within your consumers. But, don’t lose your brand identity. Rigid Flexible Hybrids Brands will combine rigid and flexible materials to make package designs that are more hands-on, modern and attractive. This will reduce costs and give an innovative edge to packaging. Anthropomorphic packaging With this approach package designs are transformed into human and animal forms via their shape or copy text. Brands will start molding their packaging into mundane objects. Augmented Reality Packaging manufacturers can visualize packaging prototypes in 3D. This reduces cost of developing physical models and accelerates design process. For consumers, it increases interest and engagement. Sneak-Peek Seeing an item in picture is different from reality. This kind of packaging has a small section, you can open to get a sneak-peek of the product or you can see through a transparent sheet. Textured Packing Add texture on packaging and labeling to focus on sensory organs, i.e. enhance the feel. You can use emboss and deboss, textured paper, or custom materials like jute, leather, wood and silk. Extreme Minimalism Minimalism is exceeding all boundaries. Brands are stripping most graphic elements and sticking to ultra-minimal imagery and text. In future, solid products won’t even have a packaging; just the label. Basic Paper Packing Brands will go back to basics. Designers will cover products with simple paper, that’ll resemble a wrapping paper. This packaging will be skintight and may cover full or half of the product.
