HOUSEHOLDS IN GOD’S SERVICE

In the ancient world, “household” was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn’t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to real-ize how far-ranging the “households” of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many “strangers” every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are “next door” to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a “household” that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

21ST & 22ND SUNDAYS-ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 2, 2018

A MINUTE IN THE CHURCH By: Gus Lloyd

“THE DEACON” While only a priest can offer Mass, you may often see another man dressed in vestments as-sisting the priest…..the deacon. There are a

couple of easy ways to tell the difference between the priest and the deacon. The priest wears his stole around his neck, the deacon’s stole is worn across the left shoulder and fastens on his right side. The deacon may also wear an outer gar-ment that resembles the priest’s chasuble. The deacon’s outer garment is called a dalmatic and has sleeves. The main ministry of the deacon is one of service. The deacon, in Can-ada, is not paid for his ministry. He is there to assist bishops or priests in their ministry. At Mass, if a deacon is assisting, he will be the one to proclaim the Gospel. The deacon may also give the homily, prepare the altar for the Eucharist, help with the distribution of Holy Communion and cleansing of the vessels used at Mass. The deacon also calls the assembly to prayer, and offers the prayers of the faithful. In addition to his duties at Mass, the deacon can also baptize, officiate at marriages in the church when there is no Mass, and preside over funerals. When a deacon turns 70 years old, he can ap-ply to the bishop for “senior status” in order to cut down on the time he spends with his ministries. Some deacons retire from active ministry, but they are ordained forever like a priest. A transitional deacon is a celibate man who is antici-pating ordination for the priesthood. A permanent deacon is often, though not always, a married man who remains a dea-con for life. For further study: CCC 1569-1571
