FOOTBALL RETURNS TO BREBEUF!
After an absence of almost 40 years, football has finally returned to Brebeuf! Over sixty students are participating in the junior and senior teams. They are off to an auspicious start and had their first victory against Lawrence Park Collegiate. As coach John Engel observes, "Coaching the team has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my sixteen year coaching career. The kids basically started learning the game from scratch and the amount that they improve every week is astounding. They work VERY hard (football is a three hour a day commitment) and it shows. They haven't complained, made excuses or quit; they continue to impress me with their integrity and effort. I'm having a blast and so are they." "It's good for the school because it brings people together and creates strong bonds of friendship," remarks Grade 11 player Alexander Davies. "It's an outlet to focus on more than academics. It's the best sport!"
PRINCIPAL’S REFLECTIONS
Derek Chen
Every year at
this time, I get
an opportunity
to look back at
all of the
activities that
have taken
place at
Brebeuf. This
year is no
different from
the others, with
a jam-packed
calendar of
events, although this year we saw the return of football to Brebeuf!
The Toronto Catholic District School Board
launched its new three-year pastoral plan: “Rooted
in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become”.
This year, we focus on the theme of belonging, and
especially looking at our community to ensure that
everyone feels like they belong at Brebeuf, regardless of how they identify.
The year started with our annual Grade 9
orientation at Camp Muskoka Woods, which was,
once again, a great success. Almost all of our Grade
9s participated, along with student leaders in
Grades 10-12. Following this, the Student Council
organized its third annual Colour Me Beuf Charity
Run, as Grade 9 students were splashed with
coloured powder as they jogged around the school.
In October, homeroom classes across all grades
prayed the rosary, while our grade retreats
continued to enrich students’ faith journeys. Our
Grade 9 Parent Orientation Night, Academic
Awards ceremony, and Grade 8 Open House took
place with great success. The Kairos Retreat was
once again a transformative faith-filled experience
for our many retreatants. At the end of the month,
Student Council hosted its Halloween dance
“Venom”.
Coming up in November is Take Our Kids to Work
Day, with our Grade 9 students going with their
parents/guardians to work. On the same day,
Brebeuf will host approximately 300 Grade 7 and 8
students from a number of elementary schools for
Take Our Kids to Brebeuf Day. As well, we look
forward to our annual Used Clothing Drive, Can-
Aid (including Kiss-a-Fish), Christmas Arts Fest,
and our Advent School Mass.
You will be able to read about our incredible
athletics program in this newsletter. Our coaches
are working tirelessly to provide the best possible
experience to our student athletes.
As always, special thanks to our Catholic School
Parent Council (CSPC), who work tirelessly to
enhance our school. We truly appreciate their
support! Congratulations, as well, to Trustee Maria
Rizzo, on her recent re-election. Trustee Rizzo will
be our new trustee due to the realignment of
wards. We also want to take this moment to thank
Trustee Michael Del Grande for his support these past few years.
Finally, please save the date for the first Lessons
and Carols for Advent, an event that will be co-
hosted by Brebeuf College, St. Joseph Morrow Park,
and Blessed Trinity Parish. We look forward to
seeing many of you at this service, taking place at
Blessed Trinity Parish on Thursday, November 6 at 7 pm.
All the best to you during this Advent season. God
bless.
The Relations is the official newsletter of
Brebeuf College School
It is named for the letters that St. Jean de Brebeuf
and his Jesuit colleagues sent home to France in the
17th Century. Its aim is to share much of the good
news coming from the school.

MEN FOR OTHERS
OPENING MASS
Brebeuf began the academic year with an opening
Mass on September 26, the Feast Day of our patron,
St. Jean de Brebeuf. The celebrant and homilist was
Father John O’Brien, S.J., a Jesuit priest and Director
of Vocations for the Society of Jesus. A canoe served
as the altar, since St. Jean de Brebeuf and the Jesuis
missionaries of the era would use turned over canoes
as altars in the wilderness. It was a beautiful
gathering to celebrate the faith of our school.
COLOUR ME BEUF
Over $1500 was
raised for the
Angel Foundation
at the recent
Colour Me Beuf
run. Organized by the Student
Council, the event
sees Grade 9s run around the campus all the while
having paint thrown on them! It was a fun and
memorable (and messy) day for all involved.
ORDER OF BREBEUF
The newest inductees to the Order of Brebeuf were
honoured at a Mass and Ceremony at the school on
Sunday, October 21.
The order of St. Jean de Brebeuf, named for our

MATHEMATICS UPDATE
By Brad Ryan, Head of Mathematics
Semester One has a Grade 10 Pre-Advanced Placement Class of 28 students, a Grade 11 -AP Class of 31 students, and a Grade 12 AP Calculus class with 22 students. The Current class averages for these classes is in the mid 80s.
The AP Calculus class has finished all first year University Calculus and is now about to study second year Calculus, including partial derivatives, double and triple integrals, and differential equations. In Semester 2 beginning in February, the 11 class continues with Mr. Ryan and takes the 12 Advanced Functions course, which we will have already finished in the Grade 11 class. Thus we can study AP-Calculus and the students can write the AP Calculus exam in early May. There will be a Grade 10 Pre-AP and Grade 9 Pre-AP
Mathematics class in Semester #2 as well.
Two of this year's Grade 10 Pre-AP Mathematics
classes of approximately 50 in total, will be fighting
for 32 spots in the Grade 11/12 AP-Calculus class for
the 2019-2020 year.
SPIRIT WEEK
Student Council hosted a successful Spirit Week form
September 24-28. Lunch time events included table
tennis, board games and cards, video games, a
barbecue, and a clubs fair.

takes incidents of bullying very seriously. In a recent
survey, less than one per cent of students reported
having been bullied. Students are encouraged to
report all incidents to the administration or a staff
member immediately.
STUDENT REFLECTION
Jacob Maillet, a grade 10
student, recently spoke
about his Brebeuf
experience at the school’s
Open House on October 4.
Below are some excerpts
from his speech.
It’s my privilege to have the opportunity to speak to
you future Brebeufians and your parents. I’m here
tonight to share with you my grade 9 experience here
at Brebeuf, my favourite school year by far.
The weeks leading up to Muskoka Woods went by in
a blur. I came to school, worked hard, and went home
and I would repeat this process daily. Then came the
Muskoka Woods Grade 9 Orientation Trip in
September. During this trip, teachers, student leaders
and the Grade 9 students go to a camp at Muskoka
Woods to enjoy various activities, but more
importantly to forge new and lasting relationships.
Muskoka Woods was a turning point for me. I shared
a cabin with some of my classmates, ate with them,
went to different activities with them, and competed
against other grade nines with them. I have to say, I
can’t remember having a better time in my life.
Everything we did there brought us out of our shells
and closer together, which carried over to life at
Brebeuf when we returned.
Some of the great teachers I met here helped
continue this process of growth and development.
They set high expectations for me and provided me
with manageable steps to meet and exceed those
expectations. Each class was so different - with very
different teachers, subjects and classmates – which
continue to add to my diverse collection of life
experiences.
From what I’ve said so far, you may believe my year
in grade nine was nothing but smooth sailing, an easy
transition to a new school, a new routine and a fresh
slate. Believe me, it wasn’t all smooth sailing.
I went throughout the school, establishing myself in
sports, youth ministry, even in my classes. But, I
confess to you, I did all these things not through
confidence, but through fear.
I was so afraid. Prior to the start of Grade 9, I was
afraid I wouldn’t be accepted for who I was. Afraid
the teachers, seniors and that not even Grade 9
students would accept and like me. Every teenager
feels that, for them, it is of the utmost importance to
be accepted. The fear inside me caused so much pain,
worry, and hurt.
So, when I entered Brebeuf, I put myself out there. I
tried so hard, just to be accepted by those around me.
And do you know what I found? I found the school
community accepted me, all of them, so easily. I never
had to fear or worry, about being accepted here at
Brebeuf. First, I can never say enough to compliment
the teachers here, who always have doors open,
ready to support you in any way they can. Moreover,
the vice-principals and the principal made sure I was
in a safe learning environment, the seniors welcomed
me, and most importantly, my classmates became my
friends.
Parents, I know that here you will find open arms and
a warm greeting for your child, as my parents did.
Through which I’m sure they’ll grow; in academic
success and as a person. Future Grade 9 Brebeufians,
this is my second home and I invite you to picture it
as your second home too. Because in just over four
years from now, you will walk across the stage and
receive your high school diploma in front of teachers
who care about you and classmates with whom you
have created lasting lifelong bonds. So think about
Brebeuf as your home too - as a place where you have
a place and that you belong. It’s been a pleasure to
speak to you all, and I’m blessed to say, welcome to
Brebeuf.
DANCE
Student Council

successful dance –
“Venom” – on
October 26.
Students from
Brebeuf, SJMP,
Loretto Abbey and
Cardinal Carter
attended.

Athletic Director
Brebeuf Athletics is off to an excellent start to the
2018-19 season. Thanks to all of our dedicated
Community and Teacher Coaches for their
commitment and leadership with our student-
athletes.
Football is back at Brebeuf! Congrats to Mr Engel and
Mr Warren for all of their tireless work getting the
Junior and Senior programs up and running. The
Juniors had a great 8-1 win vs Lawrence Park last
Friday night...the first Football win since 1981! The
teams enter the playoffs this week.
The Senior Volleyball Team, coached by Mr
Pagnanelli and Ms Prendi, is currently undefeated at
7-0 and the first place seed in the TDCAA! The semi-
final and TDCAA final happen this week. Good luck to
the boys!
Brebeuf's Jr Soccer team had a great season, finishing
undefeated in the regular season with a record of 2-
1-1, coached by Mr Debicki, Mr Marinic, and Mr
Latino. Unfortunately, the boys suffered a
heartbreaking loss in the quarter-finals.
Congratulations to Mr Breglia, Ms Seguin, Mr Jenkins,
and the Cross country team for representing Brebeuf
at several events. It was small team but displayed big
heart and surpassed expectations.
Looking forward to our winter sports season, we
have Junior and Senior Basketball, Swimming,
Badminton, Table Tennis, and Varsity Hockey.
Finally, Brebeuf’s Senior Hockey Team will defend its
undefeated 2018 TDCAA title!
In Athletics Alumni news, congratulations to 2012
