• Increase use of alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVs) and advanced technology vehicles at public/private fleets settings to: - Reduce U.S. dependence on imported petroleum, - Increase fuel economy, and - Improve emissions, especially in non-attainment area.

• Install infrastructure necessary to directly support AFVs or advanced-technology vehicles • Ensure vehicles capable of using alternative fuel do so to the greatest extent possible

Objectives

Technical Successes

Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program

Page 8: Overview of Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program

Neighborhood Electric Vehicles

• Recharging from multiple outlets = no way to record total energy use

• Consulted with electric vehicle charging researchers at Argonne Labs

• Purchased $30 “Kill-A-Watt” meters at Menards

Page 9: Overview of Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program

Hybrid Utility Trucks

• Performance problems • Vanishing software upgrades • Two manufacturers installing conflicting

software • Coordinated mfg’s upgrades, and developed

service protocol for hybrids

Page 10: Overview of Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program

Argonne Labs Case Study • City of Milwaukee Natural Gas project chosen as

national example • Reported overall project progress and fuel use of

trucks • Final data used to establish performance

benchmarks for other CNG fleets

Page 11: Overview of Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program

CNG Shuttle Bus • Charter trip to Chicago stranded on I-94 • Driver misjudged range • Worked with fleet owner to develop trip-

planning protocol, identifying optimal refueling options along planned route

• Retrained drivers to develop top-of-mind awareness of fueling habits
