South Korea: A great Market For German Products

• Germany's secret economic weapons are a vast export network and superior product quality. South Korea is a very attractive market for well established brands like Ritter Sport and Storck.

• Domestic and western markets are saturated whereas Asia offers tremendous growth potential in terms of expansion and sales.

• Recently those companies started distribution in Korea through different channels like Olive Young and department stores. It opens the door for a new wave of German brands.

• Behind Germany's export success is an outsize global sales-promotion network that is helping to boost a trade surplus that has become a source of friction with its European and U.S. allies.

Korea Product Brief: Chocolate And Confectionery Overview: Despite the fact that Korea maintains a strong processing industry for confectionery products, imports of confectionery products continue to grow as Korean consumers look for new taste, diversity, and high quality products. Korea’s imports of sugar confectionery (HS1704) and chocolate confectionery (HS1806) totaled $404 million in 2013, up 13 percent from the previous year. The United States remained the leading supplier of confectionery products to Korea by exporting $112 million. It is notable that that over 30 percent of annual sales of confectionery products occur during holiday seasons celebrated by young consumers, including Valentine’s Day, White Day (2nd Thursday in March) and Christmas.

Korea Imports of Chocolate and Confectionary Tariff Phase-Out Schedule under Korus:

Import tariffs on most chocolate and confectionary products will be removed in five equal annual stages beginning on the date the Agreement enters into force, and shall be duty free effective January 1 of year five.

Very Strong Performance Of German Imports :

In the last three years German imports grew by more than 140%, imported less than half of China’s imports and nearly generated the same amount of revenue in 2013. Clearly represents quality instead of quantity.
