ALLAREWELCOME
The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph,
and the infant lying in the manger.
When they saw this,
they made known the message
that had been told them about this child.
All who heard it were amazed
by what had been told them by the shepherds.
And Mary kept all these things,
reflecting on them in her heart.
Then the shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God
for all they had heard and seen,
just as it had been told to them.
When eight days were completed for his circumcision,
he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel
before he was conceived in the womb.—Lk 2:21

FROMTHEPASTOR
Dear Fellow Parishioners of Saint Benedict: It is that time again to focus on thinking about the year ahead as we reflect on the year that has passed. At St. Benedict 2016 was a very positive and productive year. We undertook several new initiatives through both the Faith Formation office and the school. We made some improvements to the physical plant both to the interior and the exterior. Overall the parish seemed to do well in 2016.
The question now stands as to what are the resolutions we have as a parish for 2017?
Certainly there are new initiatives coming through the diocese that will impact us. You will be hearing more about both Faith in Our Future and Faith to Move Mountains in the coming weeks. It is important that we focus on these initiatives as much of the programming that we are able to do as a parish will rely on these two points of focus. I ask you all to be open in mind and heart to the challenges that these programs place on us. Together we can move forward and make a positive impact on our community. The Faith Formation committee and the Pastoral Council are both working on ideas and plans to continue to advance our programs and our parish commitment to the new evangelization. Their work and insight are always impressive and the contributions they are making to the life of the parish are positive and forward thinking. We have many talented people who serve our parish in many ways. You will see the fruits of some of their work beginning in Lent this March.
The school is doing well and we are able to make some steps forward in the coming year. You will see an Open House ad for the school later in the bulletin announcing the opening of a Pre-K4 class for the coming school year! We are also moving forward with the development of the Middle School model for grades 6 – 8. This means some remodeling in the building and some staffing moves all of which are designed to enhance the programs we have while adding new ones. The Science Lab project, which I announced in the Fall, is developing and will be happening in Spring. These are very exciting times in the school for sure. One recent initiative in the school is the addition of an early morning care program beginning at 6:30 a.m. every day. Many parents need before school care and we were able to find the staffing to make this happen. Our first week was December 12th and the response has been positive. This is also a good program to have in the recruitment of new families to the school.
As individuals we also all make some personal assessment of where we are at the beginning of a new year. It is time for all of us to take stock of our spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health and to make those necessary adjustments to get back on track so that we might all enjoy a strong, healthy and positive year ahead.
May the Lord, in his mercy, continue to grant to you and your families every good blessing and peace during this New Year!
A Most Blessed New Year to All!
Fr. Garry

Epiphany House Blessing
This custom started many centuries ago, families marked
their doorway entrances to invite Jesus to be a daily guest
in their homes. A traditional way of doing this is by
taking a piece of chalk and writing 20+C+M+B+17 above
the doorway entrance. The initials represent the names of
the three magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthazor and the
abbreviation of the Latin word Christus mansionem
benedicat. Which means “May Christ bless the
house.” The “+” sign represents the cross and 20 and 17
represent the year. We will be handing out chalk,
instructions and a prayer for all parishioners after all the
Masses on Saturday, January 7th and Sunday, January 8th.

Respect Life News
A new report from the Centers for Disease Control shows
good news across the country as abortions and abortion
rates continue to drop to historic levels. The CDC released
its 2013 abortion surveillance report on Wednesday,
showing a 5 percent drop in abortions from 2012 and a
20 percent drop since 2004. The abortion rate was 12.5
abortions per 1,000 women ages 15-44. In comparison to
2012, the new data indicates that about 34,500 fewer babies
lost their lives to abortion in 2013. But the good news does
not extend to the African-American Community. That’s
because the percentage of abortions done on black babies
continues to be at alarming levels. The new CDC report
makes it clear that even though black Americans constitute
just 13% of the US population 35% of the babies killed in
abortions are black babies. The Associated Press reports the
CDC has not recorded a lower abortion rate since 1971, two
years before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on
Roe v. Wade and its companion case Doe v. Bolton, which
allowed for legalized abortion on demand through all nine
months of pregnancy. In 1971, several states had legalized
abortion; but it was not legal throughout the U.S. Abortion
rates have been dropping steadily in the past several years
as pro-lifers worked to pass a historic number of pro-life
laws in states across the country. Pregnancy resource
centers and sidewalk counselors also have been playing an
integral role, offering pregnant and parenting families
resources and information to empower them to choose life
for their unborn babies.
HEALINGTHEWOUNDSOFABORTION
Rachel's Vineyard can help you find your inner voice. It
can help you experience God's love and compassion on a
profound level. It creates a place where men and women
can share, often for the first time, their deepest feelings
about abortion. You are allowed to dismantle troubling
secrets in an environment of emotional and spiritual
safety.
