Until next time,

Your Principal, Bill Gillespie

Mothers’ DayI hope all of our wonderful mothers were justifiably spoilt yesterday on their special day and enjoyed the gifts prepared by the P&C as part of their fundraising efforts. The gifts were beautifully prepared by Mrs Brazel and her team of helpers. It was nice to see so many parents come up to school to assist our students pick out that “special” gift for their mum. I would like to take this time to thank everyone who was involved in making this a special occasion for our students.

A special thanksThe Nero family have asked me to convey their warm thanks to the Elanora Heights Community who have provided them with assistance and comfort. Your thoughts and support were, and still are, very much appreciated.

Change of datesThe regional Cross Country, which was supposed to be held last Thursday, will now be held on THURSDAY, 21st MAY. The Paul Kelly Cup Regional Final (AFL) will now be held on THURSDAY, 28th MAY.

Kindergarten 2016 enrolmentsWe are now taking enrolments for our 2016 Kindergarten students. If you know of someone who lives in our community and has a child starting at school next year please let them know. We will be holding an information night for 2016 Kindergarten parents on Tuesday, 19th May at 7pm in the school Library.

Art ShowOur students have been working very hard in preparing for our Art Show which will be held on 16th and 17th June. With the work well underway I thought that I would give you a glimpse of some of the fantastic artwork already completed.

Mastering spellingAre you checking your child’s weekly spelling homework? Try talking to your child about how you spell, and what you do when you don’t know how to spell a word. You can find some advice about how to help your child master spelling by going to www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/english/english-tips/getting-your-child-used-to-writing

P&C meetingThe next P&C meeting will be held this Wednesday, 13th May at 7:30 pm in the school staffroom. I look forward to seeing you there.

GREEN SEA TURTLE PROJECT | Miss Tracy BullenOn Monday, 4th May the Green Sea Turtle Project Team travelled to Taronga Zoo. We took part in many exciting activities to learn more about threats to Green Sea Turtles and the impacts of marine debris (plastics). Expert educators from Take 3, Taronga Zoo and Gibberagong delivered in-depth learning experiences. We went behind the scenes to the Wildlife Hospital at Taronga Zoo and observed a Green Sea Turtle being rehabilitated in one of the turtle pools.

We learnt that at least 13,000 pieces of plastic can be found in each square kilometre of the world’s oceans. We also learnt that in some parts of the sea, the rubbish gathers on ocean currents to form places such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch that is said to be larger than the state of South Australia.

Students are in the process of creating an artwork to encourage other students and the local community to Take 3 for Green Sea Turtles. Take 3 is a non-profit organisation that asks everyone to simply take three pieces of rubbish with them when they leave the beach. By educating young people and the community about the issue of plastic pollution Take 3 aims to drastically reduce the amount of plastic going into the sea.

Students will present our artwork on Friday, 5th June 2015 at the Coastal Environment Centre to the Mayor of Pittwater, Director of Schools and our PCS schools. I am very proud to be a part of the Elanora Heights PS Green Sea Turtle Project Team. The students were complimented many times during the day on their respect, thoughtful questions, manners and concern for the environment. Congratulations!

... STEWART HOUSE DONATIONSStewart House is a hospital, school and charity and has been serving children for over 70 years. It offers short-term respite care for children in need. Every year 1,800 public school children attend Stewart House for a 12 day stay during which they are provided with dental, optical, hearing and medical screening and treatment. For 8 of the 12 days they attend a specific purpose school for which the NSW Department of Education and Communities provides infrastructure and staffing support

All others costs associated with the childrens’ stay are met from charitable donations.

Children participate in educational programs and excursions designed to develop their social and emotional skills, build self-esteem and improve their overall well-being and are inspired to have hope and positive aspirations for their future.

Today we will be sending home envelopes for the Stewart House Donation Drive. Please place a gold coin in the envelope, complete your details on the back of the envelope and return it to the office.

The envelopes need to be returned to school by this Friday, 15th May

or Kids Kafe Roster | To volunteer call 9913 2721PLEASE READ - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

INTERNET CONNECTION – MUNCH MONITORSince the storms, parts of Elanora Heights continue to be without internet connection which unfortunately includes the canteen. This disruption has affected our online ordering system - Munch Monitor. Orders you submit on-line are being processed via the Munch Monitor administrators correctly, however, this information is unable to be fed to us at the canteen via the internet. Currently, all on-line orders are being faxed to us to ensure that your children are receiving their recess/lunch orders.

Due to our inability to access the Munch Monitor system from the canteen, we have been unable to determine the correct balance on your child’s account. This means, that if you have topped up your child’s account recently we are unable to see this. As such, your child may, over the coming days, be advised by canteen staff that they are no longer able to purchase items via Munch Monitor due to a lack of funds. If this does occur, I kindly ask, as an interim measure, you provide your child with the appropriate funds to purchase items over the counter, until further advised. Please be assured that any money you have added into your account will be accessible once the issue is resolved, we are just unable to currently see the new balance.

The service provider has indicated that the issue may not be resolved until late May. In the meantime, I thank you (both parents and children) for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact Iolanda Hazell at [email protected] or call the canteen on 9913 2721.

PSSAFor years 3-6, please be sure to update details via the Munch Monitor system if your child is now in PSSA sport or delete it from their profile if they are no longer a PSSA participant. This will ensure their lunch is made for the correct time on a Friday.

LUNCH CUT-OFF – CHANGE OF TIME – 9:00AMAs of Monday, 25th May 2015, the cut-off for recess and lunch orders (on the day of your order) will change from 9:15am to 9:00am. This change will provide canteen staff and volunteers the additional time required to prepare your child’s recess/lunch orders.

VOLUNTEERINGBelow is the volunteer roster for weeks 4 to 6 of Term 2, 2015. We are always in need of volunteers. For the canteen to run smoothly, 2 volunteers (Monday to Thursday) and 2/3 volunteers (Friday) are required to help prepare lunch orders and to serve our children during recess and lunch. Generally, we need volunteers between 9.30am – 1.30pm. However, we also welcome just a couple of hours of your time if this is all you are able to give. To volunteer, please email Iolanda Hazell on [email protected] or call the canteen on 9913 2721.
