September 10th, 2017 ~ 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

FROM FR. MARCINMy dear parishioners,

In the liturgy of the church today we celebrate 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today’s Gospel speaks about fraternal correction and of prayer in common. Today’s gospel gives simple norms of how to proceed in case of conflicts in the community. If a brother or a sister should sin, if they had behavior not in accordance to the life of the community, they should not be denounced immediately. First, it is necessary to try to speak with them alone. Then it is necessary to try to know the reasons of the other. If no results are obtained, then it is necessary to take two or three persons of the community to see if it is possible to obtain some result. Only in extreme cases, it is necessary to expose the problem to the whole community. And if the person refuses to listen to the community, then they should be considered by you as “a sinner or a pagan”, that is, as someone who is not part of the community. Therefore, it is not you who excludes, but it is the person himself/herself who excludes himself/herself.

If brotherly correction is not done in love then it can become a form of violence. Brotherly correction done in violence is unfortunately the type of brotherly correction that children sometimes do, calling each other names and punching each other. Giving correction in love is what parents do, what teachers do to students, what friends do to friends. The second reading today, from Paul’s letter to the Romans, states: “Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law…You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law. (Rom 13:8-10)”

How do we react when we receive brotherly correction? Is the Lord able to get through to us? I remember once complaining to my spiritual director about the way someone gave me brotherly correction. He asked me to think about the crucifixion of Jesus. It was violent but good came from it. Even if the brotherly correction we receive is not administered with the love of Christ can we allow good to come from it and allow the Lord to speak to us?

When you are offended, are you willing to put aside your own grievance and injury in order to help your brother's wound? The Lord Jesus wants to set us free from resentment, ill-will, and an unwillingness to forgive. The love of Christ both purifies and sets us free to do good to all - even those who cause us grief. The call to take responsibility for what we have done and have failed to do is expected and we can't escape it, both in this life and at the Day of Judgment when the Lord Jesus will return. But while we have the opportunity today, we must not give up on praying for those who cause us offense. With God's help we must seek to make every effort to win them with the grace and power of God's healing love and wisdom. Do you tolerate broken relationships or do you seek to repair

them as God gives you the opportunity to mend and restore what is broken?

“Lord Jesus, make me an instrument of your healing love and peace. Give me wisdom and courage to bring your healing love and saving truth to those in need of healing and restoration.”

OUR LADY OF THE MOUNTAIN – PRAY FOR US… ST. MARK’S – PRAY FOR US…

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament We will be having Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday, September 11th, from 7:00-8:00PM in the church. Everyone is welcome, so please join us for an hour of prayer and meditation. Confession is also available.

From Fr. Slawek Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14)

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated every year on September 14, recalls three historical events: the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor Constantine; the dedication of churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary; and the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem by the emperor Heraclius II. But in a deeper sense, the feast also celebrates the Holy Cross as the instrument of our salvation.

This day is called the Exaltation of the Cross, Elevation of the Cross, Holy Cross Day, Holy Rood Day. The liturgy of the Cross is a triumphant liturgy. When Moses lifted up the bronze serpent over the people, it was a foreshadowing of the salvation through Jesus when He was lifted up on the Cross. Our Mother Church sings of the triumph of the Cross, the instrument of our redemption. To follow Christ we must take up His cross, follow Him and become obedient until death, even if it means death on the cross. We identify with Christ on the Cross and become co-redeemers, sharing in His cross.

We made the Sign of the Cross before prayer which helps to fix our minds and hearts to God. After prayer we make the Sign of the Cross to keep close to God. During trials and temptations our strength and protection is the Sign of the Cross. At Baptism we are sealed with the Sign of the Cross, signifying the fullness of redemption and that we belong to Christ. Let us look to the cross frequently, and realize that when we make the Sign of the Cross we give our entire self to God — mind, soul, heart, body, will, thoughts.

O cross, You are the glorious sign of victory. Through Your power may we share in the triumph of

Christ Jesus.

From Fr. Javier THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church Jesus encourage the young man to keep the Commandments: Numeral 2052 "Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?" To the young man who asked this question, Jesus answers first by invoking the necessity to recognize God as the "One there is who is good," as the supreme Good and the source of all good. Then Jesus tells him: "If you would enter life, keep the commandments." Then in another passage of the Gospel when someone asks him, "Which commandment in the Law is the greatest?" Jesus replies: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the prophets." The Decalogue must be interpreted in light of this twofold yet single commandment of love, the fullness of the Law. As a followers of Christs we need to know the importance of the commandments in our lives, for this reason we will learn one by one from our Catechism.

UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE Beginning Thursday, September 21st, 7:30 PM, OLM’s evening Bible Study group will undertake a fascinating study of the entire Bible. Guided by Jeff Cavins instructing us through 24 video presentations, we will explore each period of salvation history. We will become acquainted with the major people, places, and events and see how they form the foundation of our Catholic faith. This study can help anyone make sense of the Bible and experience the life-changing power of God’s Word. Each 45–50 minute video presentation will be preceded by 30 – 45 minutes of lively group discussion. The cost, and that includes both the color-coded Bible Timeline Chart and the Bible Timeline Study Kit, is $34.95. If you would like to register, or obtain additional details, please e-mail [email protected] or call 908-832-2965. Take a journey through the Bible and discover – or deepen your understanding of – the amazing story that is woven throughout Scripture!

WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC We are Catholic because we believe: Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us, is present in many ways to his Church: in his word, in his Church's prayer, “where two or three are gathered in my name,” in the poor, the sick, and the imprisoned, in the sacraments of which he is the author, in the sacrifice of the Mass, and in the person of the minister. But he is present. . . most especially in the Eucharistic species. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1373

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults better known as the RCIA Program is the process for those who want to become Catholic. This process is for: -Adults who have never been baptized. -Adults baptized in a non-Catholic church and now have a desire to become a Catholic. -Adults who were baptized Catholic but who have not received the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation. - Or Catholics who want to know more about a specific topic discussed in an RCIA program. The Our Lady of the Mountain/Saint Mark’s RCIA program will start Wednesday evening September 20, 2017 from 7 to 9 PM and is conducted in the Basement Classroom of the OLM Parish Center. Participants who complete the program will come into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil celebrated Holy Saturday March 31, 2018. RCIA candidates will have a sponsor who will support them through this journey. Sponsors are welcomed and encouraged to attend all classes. This program is a commitment on the part of the candidate but our RCIA Instructors (TEAM) are here to assist you at any time. For additional information, please contact the OLM Parish Office, the St. Marks Parish Office or Deacon Nicholas Ardito at 908-343-8094

2017 Bishop Annual Appeal “In Giving, We Receive”

The 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal is currently underway. This year, the theme of the Appeal is “In Giving, We Receive”. By being generous with our God-given gifts, we not only help people in need, but we also help ourselves. Jesus reminds us of the blessings that come from being good stewards. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports four causes: our Catholic Charities agencies; seminarian education, Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence and our inner-city area elementary schools. You can help make this year’s appeal an even greater success by making a generous pledge today. Every single gift is important, valued and changes lives.
