January 15, 2017 ~ 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

IN THE SPIRIT OF JOHN THE BAPTIST… In the Gospel St. John he writes about the reaction of John the Baptist upon seeing Jesus coming for baptism. He calls out in recognition that Jesus is the promised one, the Lamb of God, the redeemer and hope of all his people. The significance in encounter for us is that it reminds us that we too are to be people who recognize the presence of Jesus among us. Christmas gave us time to reflect upon the wonderful love that God has for us by letting Jesus be born into human nature. The reason however that Jesus was born among us was his birth was only the beginning of the sign of God’s love. Jesus by his life, death and resurrection completes what Christmas only began. Once we recognize Jesus present in our lives, we are called to go forth and announce his presence to others. Our own baptisms were a sign of our recognition of Jesus. Our baptism like Jesus’ sends us forth to announce the Good News. This is not a simple task. Some people do not accept what Jesus stands for. There are still people whose hearts have been hardened by sin and selfishness. To be a follower of Jesus, whom we recognize as God among us, means that each day our words and actions should allow people to see that we do all things in love because of the love that God has given to us through Jesus. This is not always easy. It is a challenging task to proclaim of the Good News of Jesus to a world that often does not want to hear it. But do not be afraid for Jesus is with us…Fr. Joe CONGRATULATIONS TO SECOND GRADERS… They received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time Saturday morning. Keep this special parish group of young people in your prayers as they now begin their preparation for the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist that they will receive in May… THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK… "Let each of us accept the truth of the following statement and try to make it our most fundamental principle: Christ's teaching will never let us down, while worldly wisdom always will. Christ Himself said that this sort of wisdom was like a house with nothing but sand as its foundation, while His own was like a building with solid rock as its foundation." — St. Vincent de Paul -- worked among the poor in Paris. WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC… We are Catholic because we believe: The presentation of Jesus in the temple shows him to be the firstborn Son who belongs to the Lord. With Simeon and Anna, all Israel awaits its encounter with the Savior-the name given to this event in the Byzantine tradition. Jesus is recognized as the long-expected Messiah, the "light to the nations" and the "glory of Israel", but also "a sign that is spoken against". The sword of

sorrow predicted for Mary announces Christ's perfect and unique oblation on the cross that will impart the salvation God had "prepared in the presence of all peoples". The Catechism of the Catholic Church 529 ST. LUKE CATHOLIC PRESCHOOL PROGRAM… Registration for the 2017-2018 School Year Will be held during the months of January and February 2017 Tuesday through Thursday from 12 to 1 pm at the Preschool If that time doesn’t work, you can bring the Registration To the St. Luke Office Forms are located in the Gathering Room and Can also be accessed on the St. Luke website at www.stlukeparishlv.com Upon Registration, a $50 non-refundable check is required to Reserve your child’s enrollment. If you have any questions, please e-mail us at [email protected] WHY CATHOLIC… We are Catholic because we believe: The flight into Egypt and the massacre of the innocents make manifest the opposition of darkness to the light: "He came to his own home, and his own people received him not." Christ's whole life was lived under the sign of persecution. His own share it with him. Jesus' departure from Egypt recalls the exodus and presents him as the definitive liberator of God's people. Catechism of Catholic Church #530

How Our Lady of the Mountain Gift Card Program Works

When you purchase grocery gift cards OLM received 5% back for every dollar in sales. To illustrate: If 100 parishioners purchased a $200 gift card a month for their food shopping that would mean a profit for OLM of $12,000 a year. You could imagine what the total would be if more families used this gift card program. If you buy a $50 card, you get $50 to spend. It doesn’t cost you anything to participate. The profit we make comes from the supermarket stores. Please consider using food gift cards for our local supermarket stores. SHOP-RITE & WEIS Gift cards will be sold before and after all the Masses on the 3rd weekend of the month. They are also available at the parish office during the week. You can stop in during office hours, or you can call ahead or email [email protected] to place an order to pickup. The monies raised through this program go into the OLM Scholarship fund that was established many years ago by Fr. George to help young people in our parish who are in college. These young people can apply to the parish committee each year as we seek to help them in some way with their college expenses. Hundreds of our parish students have benefited from this program and are very grateful. Please help us continue to support their future endeavors.
