August 18th, 2019 ~ 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

FROM FR. MARCIN MY DEAR PARISHIONERS, Today is the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. Jesus said in the Gospel today, “I have come to bring fire to the earth and how I wish it were blazing already.” Jesus has come to bring the kingdom of God to the earth and how he wishes the kingdom of God were already established everywhere on earth. The fire Jesus came to bring is the fire of love, the fire of hope. Bringing fire to the earth, doing anything good, is going to run into the opposition of evil. Jesus said, “There is a baptism I must still receive, and how great my distress is till it is over.” Baptism means going completely under the water. Jesus described the opposition he received as a baptism which would ultimately end in his death. Let us not be so foolish to think that the devil does not exist. Every attempt at good is attacked in one way or another. Notice also in the Gospel today that attempts to do good will automatically cause division. Jesus said a household of five would be divided, three against two and two against three. The five in the house are the father, mother, son, daughter and daughter-in-law. It is interesting to note that the Gospel does not state that unity is the highest goal. Bringing fire to the earth is the highest goal. Standing up for what is right, working for justice and truth are higher aims than unity, and working for those aims will sometimes cause division. Jesus came to bring fire to the earth, the kingdom of God. As a result of it he would receive a baptism of distress, he would be crucified, and there would be division. When Jesus spoke about division within families he likely had in mind the prophecy of Micah: a man’s enemies are the men of his own household. The essence of Christianity is loyalty to Jesus Christ - the Son of God and Savior of the world - a loyalty that takes precedence over every other relationship. The love of God compels us to choose who will be first in our lives. To place any relationship (or anything else) above God is a form of worship. Jesus challenges his disciples to examine who they love first and foremost. A true disciple loves God above all else and is willing to forsake all for Jesus Christ. Jesus insists that his disciples give him the loyalty which is only due to God, a loyalty which is higher than spouse or kin. It is possible that family and friends can become our enemies if the thought of them keeps us from doing what we know God wants us to do. Does the love of Jesus Christ make us to put God first in all you do? The Gospel message is good news for those who seek pardon, peace, and the abundant life which God offers us through his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus offers true freedom to those who believe in him - freedom from slavery to sin, Satan,

and the oppressive forces of hatred and evil that can destroy body, mind, and spirit. Do we listen to the voice of our Savior and trust in his word? Commit our ways to him, obey his word, and we will find true peace, joy, and happiness in the Lord your God. “Lord Jesus, may the fire of your love consume me and transform my life that I may truly desire nothing more than life with you. Fill me with the power of your Holy Spirit that I may always seek to please you and do your will.”

MISSION APPEAL Support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal today! Right now, over 40% of dioceses in the United States are considered mission territory because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work in their communities. Your donations support programs, such as religious education, seminary formation, and lay ministry training, to build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Please be generous. Find more information at www.usccb.org/home-missions Next week Fr. Joebert Villasis from the Diocese of Kalibo (Philippines) will visit us. Fr. Joebert will be speaking to us at all masses. Please be generous in your commitment for the work of the missions.

THANK YOU A special thank you to all who helped make hospitality and fellowship a success over the last 3 months. Everyone has been sharing their special memories about our wonderful parish as we are celebrating this important milestone of 50 years. Thank you: Laura Bigos, Karen Creamer, John Creamer, Renny Hodgskin, Cindy Jones, Deacon Jim, Ronni Lombardo, Linda Richartz, Paul Richartz, Bonnie VanStone, Charlie VanStone for all you did. And a special thanks to all the bakers who baked the delicious treats. Have a blessed week. Our Lady of the Mountain…pray for us… Fr. Marcin From Fr. Slawek St. Bartholomew – August 24 Apostle and Martyr (First Century) Bartholomew is listed in the Synoptic Gospel as one of the Lord’s twelve apostles. In Acts he is named among those apostles who gathered in an upper room and there witnessed the risen Christ. Otherwise, there is no reliable record of his life or teaching. Some traditions have identified Bartholomew with the apostle Nathanael, otherwise named only in the Gospel of John. This is the apostle who, upon hearing Jesus described as the fulfillment of prophecy, quipped, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Upon their meeting, Jesus greeted Nathanael

Page 4: Our Mission Statement “Recognizing that we are the Body of … · 2019. 9. 18. · Our Mission Statement “Recognizing that we are the Body of Christ, the Catholic Community of

with the words, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile.” But most scholars dispute this identification. According to the history be Eusebius, Bartholomew engaged in a missionary journey that took him as far as India, where he is said to have left a copy of the Gospel of Matthew. He is also said to have preached in Persia, Egypt, Armenia, and elsewhere. Legend has it that he died in Armenia, where he was flayed alive before being beheaded. Michelangelo, in his depiction of the Las Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, shows Bartholomew holding a curved blade in one hand, and in the other his own flayed skin. From Fr. Javier TEACHING FROM THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH - THE SACRAMENTS OF THE CHURCH The Anointing Of The Sick My dear brothers and sisters, let us continued our learning from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. According to our catechism, "By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them, and indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ." Illness and suffering have always been among the gravest problems confronted in human life. In illness, man experiences his powerlessness, his limitations, and his finitude. Every illness can make us glimpse death. Illness can lead to anguish, self-absorption, sometimes even despair and revolt against God. It can also make a person more mature, helping him discern in his life what is not essential so that he can turn toward that which is. Very often illness provokes a search for God and a return to him. God bless you. WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC We are Catholic because we believe: Fire. While water signifies birth and the fruitfulness of life given in the Holy Spirit, fire symbolizes the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit's actions. The prayer of the prophet Elijah, who "arose like fire" and whose "word burned like a torch," brought down fire from heaven on the sacrifice on Mount Carmel. This event was a "figure" of the fire of the Holy Spirit, who transforms what he touches. John the Baptist, who goes "before [the Lord] in the spirit and power of Elijah," proclaims Christ as the one who "will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire." Jesus will say of the Spirit: "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!" In the form of tongues "as of fire," the Holy Spirit rests on the disciples on the morning of Pentecost and fills them with himself. The spiritual tradition has retained this symbolism of fire as one of the most expressive images of the Holy Spirit's actions. "Do not quench the Spirit." The Catechism of the Catholic Church 696

VBS Thank you! Another Vacation Bible school is in the books! And it was a great success! The children spent the week on a Miraculous M-I-S-S-I-O-N learning God's love for us! Vacation Bible school is a fete that can only be accomplished by a group of faithful and dedicated individuals. So many shared their time, talent and treasure. Thank you to Frs. Marcin, Slawek, and Javier for joining us each morning and afternoon leading us in prayer. Thank you to the middle school and high school students who gave up a week of summer vacation to share their time and talents being group leaders and session aides and for doing any task asked of them. You are wonderful role models for our younger parishioners. Thank you to the parents and guardians for trusting us with your children! Thank you to the children who attended. Your behavior was excellent! Your manners and helping each other was so kind. Your singing rocked! You should join the children's choir. And, most importantly, you were so reverent during prayers; it shows you attend Mass and know your basic prayers. Thank you to the parishioners who shared their treasures with us. The monetary donations provided everything we needed to plan a memorable week. Those that donated paper products, they were a blessing as they were used for snack, science and crafts. Thank you! Thank you to the amazing activity leaders (Denise Bigora, Liz Krug, Sara Longueira, Barbara Phelan, Gabby Stopa, and KellyAnn Tell) who had been working for weeks preparing lessons and activities for each day, who gathered props and decorations and supplies to provide an exciting and thought provoking lesson, and who arrived well before time and stayed late each day to prep for the next. Your dedication and love for the children of our parish is awe-inspiring. The 2020 VBS catalog comes out September 1! Would love to see more families participate and we can always use more helping hands. God Bless! Dolores Reagle Youth Ministry

St. Luke & OLM Long Valley CYO Basketball Registration is now opened! The Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) of the Diocese of Paterson provides catholic youths the opportunity to grow athletically in an environment that

fosters teamwork, good sportsmanship, and faith. In furtherance of that mission, the St. Luke Parish offers children the opportunity to participate in CYO basketball and play for the St. Luke Blue Storm! St. Luke & Our Lady of the Mountain children will be considered parishioners and not meet team requirements when it comes to Parishioners vs Non-Parishioners. Teams are formed for boys and girls in 4th through 8th grades that compete with other churches in the Paterson Diocese located in Morris and Sussex Counties. Games are played generally on Sunday afternoons starting in November and concluding in mid-February. Practices are held in the Parish Center starting in October. The registration fee is $180.00. Form to fill out - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IaKcbLY2m7Hne1fl2G3jpNn0IKhYm_Qh/view?usp=sharing To keep this fee reasonable, the program provides players with the uniforms that families are required to return at the end of the season. Teams are also required to participate in a service project each season to help the Parish or the Long Valley community. Questions or concerns, please email [email protected]
