Earlier in the week the Pope will address congress on Thursday, September 24. This historic occasion will be conveyed to crowds gathered in the Mall by big screens. After Washington DC he will be in a motorcade down Fifth Avenue in New York City to St Patrick’s Cathedral. He will stay at the residence of the Vatican’s ambassador to the United Nations before meeting immigrants in Harlem and then celebrating Mass at Madison Square Garden. He rounds off his visit with the celebrations in Philadelphia over the weekend The Pope’s visit reminds us of two important factors about the Pope and our Catholic faith. First, we sometimes forget the global impact of the papacy. The Holy Father is the only global Christian leader in the world today. In fact, he is the only global religious leader in the world today. The man in the white cassock stands, therefore, not only as the leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide, but he is the only global religious leader who stands for God, morality and right action in the world. When the Pope visits America his importance is recognized in his invitation to speak to Congress, visit world leaders and make the impact of the gospel felt in the world. The second thing to remember is that the Pope exerts this influence not so much at the global governmental level, but through the hearts, hopes, faith, and families of ordinary people. Thousands will travel to see Pope Francis because he holds in himself the faith and hopes of billions of individuals and families worldwide. As such his appeal is local and individual as well as global. This is the beauty of the Catholic faith: it stands tall and true down through the ages and across the whole globe while it is worked out in the ordinary lives of billions of ordinary men, women, boys and girls. The faith is both universal and particular at the same time. Finally, it is no coincidence in this time of crisis for the human family that the Pope is attending the World Meeting of Families. This event, along with the Synod on the Family in Rome in October is the Catholic Church’s response to the unprecedented crisis in the family that the human race is experiencing. Throughout the church the emphasis is on the family. So here at Our Lady of the Rosary our focus is on our families. Everything we do at Our Lady of the Rosary will revolve around our marriages, our children, our single people and widows, our grandchildren and schoolchildren, young people and college students. Together we must work to build our community and support our families. The future of our church and the future of our society depends on it. The Pope’s emphasis is a reminder that we can only do this through the continued graces received by God—who is the founder of the human family and the one who uses our experiences in the family to teach us the vital, but difficult lessons of love.
