We get absorbed in doing good works. We educate the young. We feed the hungry. We campaign against evil. We try to make the world a better place. All of these things are good, but the good can sometimes be the enemy of the best. The first calling is to proclaim the gospel of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. If we do not do that then, in the words of Pope Francis, the church has become no more than another “non governmental agency”. When we forget the primary message of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and focus only on good works it is not long before people draw the conclusion that they can do all those good works without going to church or believing in Christ. John the Baptist helps us to remember the core message, the primary gospel and the foundational need to turn to the Lord and pray for true renewal of heart, mind, soul, and body . As we move through Advent to the celebration of the Lord’s Nativity, let us turn again and put him first in our lives, our homes, and our parish. Your Pastor, Fr. December 4, 2016 The Second Sunday of Advent Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The readings for the second Sunday of Advent always focus on St. John the Baptist. As we enter a new phase of our life together at Our Lady of the Rosary it is worth remembering the prophetic and preaching aspect of our ministry.

John the Baptist was a prophet. This means he lived and proclaimed a message from God to his people. The message was one of God’s judgement and mercy. The people had wandered and strayed from God’s love. If they would return to them, he would welcome and forgive.

This is still the timeless message of the Christian gospel. Very often Catholics tend to get side tracked.
