The Permanent Diaconate: A Call to the Ministry of Service
At Our Lady of Perpetual Help we have been blessed with some wonderful men serving as permanent deacons in our parish. Currently we are benefitting from the ministry of Deacon Horacio Corchado and Deacon Rick DeLeon.
We are now seeing a bit of the changing of the guard. Deacon Gary Stevens was ordained in January, 2007 but retired from active ministry some time ago. As a community we thank Deacon Gary for his wonderful and faithful ministry to our parish and wish him and his wife Roxanna much joy and happiness in the years ahead.
For the past five plus years Mark Schultz has been discerning, studying and preparing for ordination to the perma-nent diaconate. Yesterday, Mark and 18 other men were ordained by Bishop Brennan at Holy Spirit Church. We are overjoyed that Deacon Mark will be assigned to our parish.
In this bulletin there is a reflection on the ministry from Deacon Gary and an introduction to Deacon Mark A reflection from Deacon Gary …
Dear Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parishioners,
Due to health issues I have been dealing with the last few years, as you may or may not have noticed, I have pulled back from the major elements of ministering as a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Fresno.
Holding to the hope that I could recover enough to resume full ministry, it is apparent it will not happen, and there is much sadness as a result. I am doing well enough to be available for some simpler functions Deacons are able to do.
As I reflect back on my 12 years as a Permanent Deacon serving Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, I recognize how greatly God has blessed me.
Most especially was the extraordinary privilege to have the joy of assisting our priests at many Holy Masses. Those were grace-filled experiences and I will treasure them forever!
And then there were the many Baptisms I was privileged to be a part of! I will always remember my very first assignment for conferring the Sacrament of Baptism..16 babies! What a blessing and what a way to break in a Rookie!" It is always a heartening and humbling moment when parents say to me, "You Baptized my child."
And the Convalidations for the Sacrament of Matrimony were always so life-giving and joyful. There was one time in particular when a couple was so in love with each other, AND their renewed Catholic Faith (after completing their Adult Faith Formation classes) they were truly "glowing" with excitement for their new life together as a Married couple IN FULL communion with the Church. That was truly a grace-filled occasion! It was a terrific honor to celebrate that event, and all the many other joyful occasions I was so privileged to experience.
With a heartfelt and warm appreciation to all of you in our parish, a great big "THANK YOU" for the love and support you have given me all these years (which have gone by far too quickly)! May God richly bless you, especially with the gift of ever deepening love and faith in Him!
As I continue to look forward to seeing you as we worship our Loving, Merciful God together,
I remain yours in Christ, Deacon Gary Stevens

A Reflection from Deacon Mark Schultz…. My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with a combination of considerable joy, some nervous anticipation, and thankful praise to our
Lord, that I begin ordained ministry to the people of God within the Diocese of Fresno. Our Lady of Perpet-
ual Help’s welcoming and Catholic faith-filled community is, and has been a very special part of our life.
For 27 years, my wife (Dee) and I have enjoyed a profound feeling of Christ-centered fellowship and
Eucharistic unity from OLPH. All three of our children (William, Nathaniel, & Rachel) attended the terrific
treasure which is our parish school, and speak fondly of the many happy memories made within the campus’
environment. - (Go Cougars!)
My parents (William & Gloria) recently celebrated 54 years of marriage and raised my five younger
brothers, two sisters and I in the metropolis of Madera. Most of my siblings live here in the central-valley
and went to our sister parish - St. Joachim’s. The Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, and Oblates of St.
Joseph were influential in planting the seed to a vocational call of service. I gladly acknowledge their early,
and contributory guidance.
I rely on the love and grace of God Almighty, and trust in His plan for the future and direction He has
for this servant. I earnestly appeal for, and seek out OLPH’s heart-felt prayers, abundant good will, cordial
patience, and genuine charity as this Diaconal journey begins. May God continue to bless each and everyone
of you!

Am I Being Called to the Priesthood?
To be precise, a man only “knows” he is called when he is ordained! However, there are many positive signs that can point to a vocation, and which can help a man make the deci-sion to enter the seminary and continue along the path towards the priesthood. Read these state-ments to yourself, take them to prayer, then act on what you know is right. God knows, you may be called to the priesthood!
• A personal relationship with Jesus Christ is important to me. • People have told me I would make a good priest. • Going to Mass and Adoration is a very important part of my
faith life. • The thought of becoming a priest keeps coming back over and
over again. • I feel called to give more of myself to others. • I have a burning desire to help people get closer to Christ and
to know the Truth.
If some of these statements reflect how you feel, if your heart is pounding even harder, if you sense a greater desire to find out if God is calling you to live in black and white, get in touch with the Vocations Director or our Pastor. [email protected] Have no fear, the Lord wants only what is best for you!
