Messages from the Principal’s Desk
Welcome everyone to Week 9 of the term. We have just had some of our busiest weeks of the year with our
School Faction Carnival, the Mullewa Show, and the Year Eleven students from Newman Catholic College
visiting our school, and throughout all of it the students have continued to work steadily in an orderly fashion,
setting goals and achieving them in their learning. This has reflected our Fruit of the Spirit that we are focusing
on over the last few weeks of term – Self Control. We are truly blessed to have the students and staff that we
do, that enable our school community to keep growing and flourishing.
Visit from the Director of Catholic Education WA Last Tuesday, we were fortunate to have a visit from our Director of Catholic Education
in WA, Dr Debra Sayce. Whilst she was only here for a short visit, we were very
appreciative that Dr Sayce took the time to travel out to Mullewa to see how our school
and staff were all going. She especially loved the flowers out in the garden, and our new
welcome sign and faction bunting and felt a sense of welcome.
Newman Catholic College Visit Students and four staff members from Newman College again visited the school in the
week of the Mullewa Agricultural Show and the Wildflower Show to partake in
community work as part of the REMAR program they belong to. As usual, they worked
tirelessly to assist the Mullewa community in their busiest week of the year, providing much needed extra
hands and relief for our town’s hard working volunteers.
So many times during this week the same words can
be heard “We couldn’t do this any more without the
Newman students”. One of the highlights of the
visit for our students is the Mass celebrated together
in our church and the opportunity for the students to
sing the hymns they have been taught over the years
by previous groups of Newman students. Father
Robert blesses an OLMC school badge for each of
the students to wear on their blazer once they are
back at school. Another highlight is the disco held
in the school hall and this is always a lot of fun for
both sets of students. The staff work tirelessly over
the week and the students’ commitment to the work,
and their behaviour, is always brilliant. They are
truly a fine example for both OLMC students and
our Mullewa community, of giving to others.

School Faction Carnival Our School Faction Carnival this year was a wonderful success in a number of years. After suggestions from
parents at our P&F meetings we trialled the new format of holding all events on the one day and this seems to
have been very welcomed by those attending the carnival. We began the day with the Jumps and Throws
events held at the school and it was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents there to watch the
children compete. The move up to the Rec went smoothly and all of the students participated enthusiastically
in their running and team events across the day. Competition between Gold and Blue was fierce throughout
the day but by the end Gold faction was absolutely delighted to have won their first carnival for many years.
It really was wonderful to see Gold so excited about their win and the cheering could be heard loudly and
clearly from both students and parents in the crowd. Well done to Blue Faction on their behaviour and cheering
to take out the Best Behaved Faction shield.
We thank all of those parents who were able to transport their children on the day and to the many helpers
who assisted Mrs Tracey Messina transporting everything up to the Rec, setting up, running the events,
packing up at the end of day and carting the equipment back to school. The day does involve a fair amount of
organisation and again we thank Mrs Messina for all the work she does to ensure the day runs smoothly.
NCVISSA Inter-School Athletics Carnival Those students attending the NCVISSA Inter-School Athletics Carnival have been informed through a parent
information letter that was sent home last week. This carnival will be held on Friday, 20th September.
Tournament of Minds (TOM’s) Tournament of Minds is a problem-solving program for teams of students from both Primary and Secondary
years. It involves a team working collaboratively to solve a series of challenges. Teams in primary years must
be a mix of students. Congratulations to Sofie Weir, Lachlan Rowe, David Chambers, Laney Critch, Sahara
Flannagan, Tarkyn Fulker, and Aidan Weir, who travelled across to Geraldton last week to compete in a
tournament against other Mid-West schools. It was the very first time OLMC had participated in TOM’s and
while the day was challenging for our students in terms of the first time they had competed, all of the team are
determined to grow in confidence and skills to hopefully continue competing next year. A huge thank you to
Mrs Messina for training the students in the intricacies of TOM’s and giving them the chance to compete in
an event that is outside of their comfort zone.

Skills for Life – Year Five/Six Students The students in Year Five/Six recently participated in a Skills for Life course involving first aid skills and
knowledge. The course is run by Royal Life Saving WA and the students thoroughly enjoyed learning new
skills. The course coordinator was extremely impressed by our students’ level of knowledge and commitment
to learning during the presentation.
School Climate Survey An information letter was sent home to all parents last week regarding participation in our School Climate
Survey for this year. This is an opportunity for parents to provide feedback to the school so it can be used as
part of our school planning agenda. The survey can be accessed online or via a paper copy and is completely
anonymous. Please contact the school if you would like a paper copy, or if you have any questions regarding
the survey.
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation
Mrs Penny Jones was extremely fortunate last week to have attended a
Professional Development day run by the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen
Garden Foundation, linking kitchen and garden activities to the school
curriculum. The day focused on the essential components of a kitchen
garden program and the four pillars of pleasurable food education - grow,
harvest, prepare and share. Mrs Jones thoroughly enjoyed the day and
has come back to school with creative ways of working in our school
garden and kitchen. On Friday, the students harvested some of this year’s
crop of vegetables and spent time cooking and enjoying the spoils of the
garden. There were a lot of happy faces on Friday afternoon!
The Matriarch of the Murchison
One of our grandparents, Mr Tony Critch, visited
last week to present our Year Three/Four and
Year Five/Six classes with a copy of the book he
has co-written on the history of the Pindar Hotel
entitled “The Matriarch of the Murchison”. We
are fortunate to have these copies to add to our
local history selection in our school library. The
school also owns copies of Kevin Crtich’s
autobiography, Tony’s father.
Year Three and Five NAPLAN Parents of Year Three and Five students, please note that your child’s NAPLAN report for 2019 will be sent
home early this week. An individual Student Report - FAQ’s for parents in brochure form can be
downloaded from https://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au/home/assessment/testing/naplan/parents/results-
reporting. This brochure provides detailed information about how to understand a child’s individual student
report. If you have any questions surrounding your child’s NAPLAN report, please contact your child’s
classroom teacher.

Parent/Teacher Interviews - Weeks 9 & 10 As we are coming to the end of the third term, we would like to share with you the way your child has been
progressing, therefore, we are offering times for an interview regarding your child’s progress. The purpose
of the interview is to celebrate a term of hard work and to highlight areas of strength as well as areas in
which your child may need to continue working on. Classroom teachers have sent a letter home indicating
times they will be available in Weeks 9 & 10, if you wish to book an interview.
New School Phone Number Please note that the school has recently had a new phone system installed and the new phone number for the
school is 99612200. Until callers become familiar with the new number, for the next 12 months all calls made
to our old number will be redirected.
Pupil Free Day – Start of Term Four A reminder that the first day of Term Four is a Pupil Free Day as staff will be participating in Professional
Development. School will commence for students on Tuesday, 15th October.
