Stewardship Reflection

“If it does not please you to serve the Lord, de-

cide today whom you will serve…As for me and

my household, we will serve the Lord.”

(Joshua 24:15)

When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be will-

ing to become a partner in the work of the Lord. A

partner is a person who invests their time, talent

and treasure. If we say we serve God, we must actu-

ally do something and not merely talk about it!

We have an obligation to share with others, that

which God has given us. Share your time, and tal-

ents. Men and women can become involved in the

life of our Parish by becoming an Altar Server,

Catechist, Choir Member, Lector, and/or Ush-

er. By taking an active role in the liturgical life, and

service of the Parish, you can have a wonderful ex-

perience. Feel free to fill out the form on page 5 and

drop it in the collection basket or call the rectory.

Religious Education

A Note From Sr. Mary Rose…

The Catechists will be commissioned at the 10:45

a.m. Mass. CCD classes are in session. The Cate-

chists will dismiss the children in grades 1, 2 and 3.

I ask that the parents bring the children to church

for the 10:45 Mass. Grades 8 and 9 will be taken to

church by the Catechists and parents can meet

them in the church for the 10:45 Mass. I ask that

the children in the Thursday CCD classes and par-

Those Who are

Separated or Divorced

In September, OLMC is starting a 10-session pro-

gram, for those who are separated, recently divorced

or going through the process of divorce. Our mission

is first, to support emotionally and spiritually those

who have suffered the loss of the marital relation-

ship, and second, to offer a caring, compassionate

and confidential environment for the sharing of ex-

periences. The group size is limited and advance

registration is required - no walk-ins. Please call

the Rectory during regular business hours to regis-

ter. All sessions will be held on Monday evenings

from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Parish Hall. All

calls are confidential and there is no fee in order to

attend.

Music Notes

Greetings everyone. This week I'd like to talk about effective hymn singing. In fact, when we

talk about 'good' hymn singing, we think about the leadership role of the cantor and when ap-

plicable, the choir. Surely it is crucial for both not only to sing the hymn correctly but to express

in it in a manner consistent with its message.

From a general stand point and at its very core, good hymn singing happens when we, as mem-

bers of the worshipping assembly, sing together in unison. The goal is for our voices to blend and become one. In

our daily living as good Catholics, our goal is also to become harmoniously one with each other and so our sung

worship is an active embodiment of what we as good Christians, strive to achieve in our regular everyday living.

Over the last few weeks, many of you have noticed our new hymn board. So what is the practical benefit of having a

hymn board? Simply stated, a hymn board allows members of the assembly to find a song in their hymnal well be-

fore it is even announced by the cantor. This in turn, allows each person to fully concentrate on the organ introduc-

tion to the hymn.

Two things to listen for during the instrumental introduction to a hymn are 'pitch' and 'tempo'. Listen attentively

as it is being played. The 'tempo' or speed of the music heard during the introduction is the very tempo that will be

used once we begin singing. Same goes for the pitch.

This is actually very important when it comes to solid congregational singing. Like the cantor, the people too need

to recompense for the natural audible delay between the time the organ is heard and the time the sound is actually

produced. If we are able to sing together with a steady and accurate tempo, our singing will become much clearer,

and will not drag.

Our board, though fairly easy to see by most in the pews, may not be as clear....especially for those sitting further

away or on the opposite wing. If your vision is not too good, consider sitting closer. The hymn numbers are ar-

ranged from top to bottom in the order they are to be played. The numbers that are right aligned on the board are

the hymn numbers while the numbers that appear left aligned correspond to the Psalm and/or the Gospel Acclama-

tion if they are settings that differ from what appears with your weekly readings in your hymnal.

Please do not hesitate to approach me after any of the masses should you have any questions or concerns. As al-

ways, we are all here to serve you.

Andrew Cardona, Director of Music Ministry
