Pastor's Message

Dear Parish Family,Dear Parish Family,Dear Parish Family,Dear Parish Family,

This weekend I'd like to honor and wish all biological fathers, as well as, all men who have showed someone a father's love a Happy Father's Day! Father’s Day is an opportunity to tell dad how much we appreciate him. New dads, old dads, granddads, fathers-in-law and stepdads ~ there must be a million fatherly types out there and, without a doubt, there are at least that many reasons to honor them on Father’s Day. Thank you for your love, sacrifices and hard work.

On Tuesday, June 19, we celebrate Freedom Day or Emancipation Day! This day on which the Union Army enforced the Emancipation Proclamation is a day of public and community events celebrating equal rights and freedom for all people. The Encyclical of Pope St. John Paul II's "Evangelium Vitae" and the Declaration on Religious freedom of the Second Vatican Council speak prominently about this. As Christians we need to continually proclaim and work together for the equality of all peoples, the emancipation of the poor and the underprivileged, and respect for all peoples no matter what the creed, religion or race. Every one of us was created equal because we were all made in the image and likeness of God.

In the gospel today, Jesus describes how a sower scatters seed on the land and then one day discovers the land bearing fruit so the sower knows it is harvest time. "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches." [Matthew 13:31–32] With the Kingdom of God, as with nature, we need to understand that God is at work in our midst; in us, in the people around us, in the Church, and in all of creation. Without God, "we can do nothing". Today we ask for God's grace, that we may follow God's commands and be pleasing to Him "by our resolve and our deeds".

Summertime is almost here. I know that during summer people travel for vacation, pilgrimages or simply go somewhere else to "take a break" from their daily routines. As you may be planning a vacation or "break”, I’d like to take a moment to remind you of the importance of your continued financial support of our parish. Throughout this popular vacation time, we still have to pay staff salaries, cover ongoing church maintenance and upkeep expenses, and pay obligations to our vendors, so we need your constant financial support even during the summer months. As always, I thank you for your generosity and assistance.

I have invited Fr. Tom Ciba, former pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, to celebrate the Filipino Mass here at our Church on Sunday, July 1, at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Please come and join us.

May God bless all of you and your families.

Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal

This year’s Appeal, Sharing God’s Blessings, is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on God’s generosity to us and to share the blessings we have been given with those around us. This year, our parish goal is:

Parish Goal 201Parish Goal 201Parish Goal 201Parish Goal 2018888: : : : $2$2$2$28888,8,8,8,815151515

We are often reminded by our Holy Father Pope Francis and Sacred Scripture that in order to love one another we must share the blessings which God has provided to us.

We are called to similarly share what is granted to us by God and return it to Him so that not one of our brothers and sisters goes without: without the gift of faith; without the essential human needs; and without a personal relationship with Our Lord. We are called to Share God’s Blessings, and when we do, we find freedom and joy in proclaiming the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus, as the Apostles did over 2,000 years ago!

Will you join your brothers and sisters in Sharing God’s Blessings? May God bless you for your generosity!

Father’s Day ~ Remembered

Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 (St. Joseph's Day) since the Middle Ages. This celebration was brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to Latin America, where March 19 is often still used for it, though many countries in Europe and the Americas have adopted the U.S. date, which is the third Sunday of June (falling on June 17 in 2018).

Father's Day is celebrating its 108th anniversary this year and it all began when a young woman wanted to honor her dad.

In May of 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Wash., sat in church listening to a Mother's Day sermon. She decided she wanted to designate a day for her dad, William Jackson Smart. Dodd's mother had died in childbirth, and Dodd's father, a Civil War veteran, had taken the responsibility of singlehandedly raising the newborn and his other five children.

The following year, Dodd wanted to celebrate Father's Day on June 5th, her father's birthday, and petitioned for the holiday to be recognized in her city. Needing more time to arrange the festivities, Spokane’s mayor pushed the date back by two weeks, and the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, according to the Spokane Regional Convention and Visitor Bureau.

While Congress was quick to officially declare the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day in 1914, after it was first celebrated on May 10, 1908, it took much longer for Father's Day to be legally recognized. But thanks to Dodd's celebration, Father's Day steadily gained popularity.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge said that he supported it, in order to establish closer relationships between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations, according to the Library of Congress.

President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in 1966, but it wasn't until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it a permanent holiday. Since then, Father’s Day has become a time to recognize the many different father figures in our lives.
