Mass Attendance - online schedule

Mass is available online at our parish website (www.ladyofhopemaine.org) . The schedule is as follows: Monday-Friday 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Saturday 8:00 AM, Weekend: Saturday 4:30 PM, Sunday 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Online attendance doesn't enable us to receive Communion, but does join us to the Word and to our communi-ty of faith. The following Act of Spiritual Communion was often used in the past when it was not customary for people attend-ing Mass to receive Communion very frequently.

Act of Spiritual Communion

"My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this mo-ment receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be sepa-rated from you. Amen" (St. Alphonsus)

We thank you for attending in this way. Note that during this time the Monday 9:00 AM Mass will usually also be our weekly St. Brigid School Mass.

Summer BBQ and Raffle

We have cancelled our Summer BBQ and Raffle because we will not be able to gather in larger numbers in June and many of the prizes in the Raffle will not be usable this year with the closure of so many seasonal attrac-tions. We do plan to have a gathering when that is possible!

Catholic Appeal

Many of us have received a mailing announcing the 2020 Catholic Appeal. As you know this Appeal funds many important services of the church in Maine such as Catho-lic Charities, as well as the operations of the diocese it-self. Our school receives benefit from the Appeal. You can designate your gift to go to a particular agency, such as Catholic Charities - Immigrant and Migrant work, for instance.

We have probably all received many requests for funding these days and some of us are facing financial loss our-selves. If you are able to make a charitable gift, please do consider the Catholic Appeal. Thanks.

A prayer for our journey as a parish

"God of the journey, as we travel on alert us to the things that matter and open our eyes to every sign of your presence. Give us a sense of direction, or at least a sense of purpose, a sense of wonder, a sense that, in everything, You are walking with us step by step, gently leading us to the heart of things."

Printed Church Bulletins

The bulletin is available on our website. How-ever copies of the printed bulletin are availa-ble at the doorway at St. Pius X Church. There is a sheltered space there. New bulletins will be put out on Fridays.

Mass Intentions The Parish Office is open by phone and email and can make arrangements for Mass Intentions this way. At this point we are scheduling intentions for the livestream Masses only - these are the only Masses being celebrated in the parish at this time. If you wish to schedule an Intention for any other Mass, that intention will be put on a "wait" list until we know when our regular schedule can resume and what that schedule be. Thanks for your understanding.

Our parish celebration of Confirmation and First Eucharist has been rescheduled to Sunday Nov. 8th at the 9:00 AM Mass.

We are hoping by then that larger numbers of us will be able to gather. As with all planning at the moment there is

the possibility that further changes or conditions will be needed. If this

becomes the case, we will pass on that information as soon as possible.

Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle May 2020 Prayer Intentions

We now start the third year of urging parishioners and friends to pray for our parish and other world needs and for one another through these prayer intentions and the idea of a Parish Prayer Circle. I hope that these intentions and the commitment to pray have been a source of grace and bless-ing to you and to our parish, school, and world. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School.

2. Pope Francis' Prayer Intention for May - For Deacons We pray that deacons, faithful in their service to the Word and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church. 3. We pray that we can be motivated and inspired by hope and not fear, that we seek ways we can be sources of hope to others by what we say and do, that we listen to voices of reason as our communities continue to struggle in this health and economic crisis. We pray for those who are suffering today.

A Note of the Sacrament of Reconciliation From the Office of the Bishop - It is the consistent teaching and prac-tice of the Church (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, par-agraph no. 1452), that when it is impossible to receive sacra-mental absolution, a penitent should offer a perfect act of contrition (that is, for the love of God above all else). Please remind your parishioners (perhaps as part of a livestreamed Mass or a post to your website) that “such contrition remits venial sins; it also obtains forgiveness of mortal sins if it in-cludes the firm resolution to have recourse to sacramental confession as soon as possible” (cf. Council of Trent, 1551).

What Comes Next ????

July 14 Maine Primary Election: It is possible to apply for absentee ballots for the July 14 Maine Primary Election. You can do that online at www.maine.gov

We continue with our schedule of livestreamed Masses. Please let your friends and neighbors know these are happening. We've found people in the parish who have internet but did not know about the Masses on our website. Printed copies of the bulletin are available at St. Pius X. New copies are put out on Fridays.

We will soon be in touch with everyone again. We will be sending an e-letter out to those for whom we have email ad-dresses. In the subject line it will read "from Our Lady of Hope Parish" so you will know it is us. For those without an email address, we will be making phone calls. I know sometimes people don’t answer for numbers you don’t recognize. If you don’t answer, we will leave a message - and if need be you can call us back. We do very much want to be in touch with everyone.

And thanks for all you are doing: joining us online for Mass, keeping up your church support, reaching out to neighbors and family in need, praying for one another. This is clearly a challenge for all of us and will probably result in some changes in how we do things for the future. Together we can make it through. As Queen Elizabeth famously ended her Easter mes-sage "we'll meet again."

What's cooking? - Many people seem to have taken an interest (or a need to) cook lately. How about sharing your favorite recipe? Send it in and will put it in the bulletin or on our website for others to try. We'd love your name, but you can be "anonymous" if you wish.

Special Prayers - During this time most funerals are being postponed until it is safe to gather. Let us keep in our prayers families who have lost loved ones recently. In our parish these include Margaret Doyle, Patricia Louise Beaumier, Patricia O'Malley and Ruth Lajoie. Their names have been placed on the altar at St. Pius X along with other prayer requests given us by parish members. If you have requests for the names of others who have died recently, please send them to the Par-ish Office. On Sunday May 10th, we were able to celebrate the baptism of Wesley David Noyes, son of Anna and the late David Noyes. Everyone was "masked" and observed proper distancing, but it was a joyous celebration nonetheless.

Educational Success at St. Brigid School

Each of the Catholic schools in Maine recently surveyed their school families about how the "distance and online learning experience" is going. The Catholic schools overall have been having 97 or 98% of their pupils attending and participating in the online activities daily, a remarkable record.

A sample of the responses for St. Brigid School:

94% of families judge that they are doing pretty well, having some fun, doing our best and generally succeeding 71% of our students are regularly or sometimes viewing the School livestream Mass from St. Pius X at 9:00 AM on Mondays (all are welcome online to join us!) 89% say their child's teacher's support is "awesome"(42%), helpful and useful (27%) and clearly doing the best they can (21%) 85% note a great connection from the school and administration 78% say teachers respond quickly to questions 64% of students rate their ZOOM experience as "great" 25% would like more 86% of families feel teachers and administration is effectively communicating lessons and announcements.

Teachers and administration are meeting regularly to monitor student progress and ways to make the experience even better. Congratulations St. Brigid School community.

Daily Prayer This Week We can hardly believe the message from this week's gospel. It is one of complete invitation to us. Jesus tells us of his inti-mate bond with the Father and invites us into the same kind of close relationship with Jesus himself.

He does not promise us a trouble-free life, and is clear about the challenges we will face as his followers. He cautions us that the world will want to make us one of "its own" and Jesus lovingly protests that we are his, not the world's. He prays to the Father of us, "they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me..."

This kind of loving dialogue with the Father is what Jesus wants with us. It does not mean our lives will be trouble-free but we are offered the peace in our hearts that Jesus longs to give us.

Some days we may feel anything but peace in our hearts. That is the time to pause and open our hands and our hearts to the Lord. Just the simple physical act of opening our hands can send a signal to our hearts. We can stop thinking and start feeling the love that Jesus has for us.

We can begin each morning at the side of our beds, aware of the sacredness of the day ahead of us, and ask for peace, courage and guidance. On our way to work or while taking care of our family, cooking or running errands, we can stop for the briefest moment and ask again: "Lord, help me to feel how much you love me. Help me to accept that love and carry it to all those you send into my life today."

And at the end of the day, we can pause again at the side of our bed, reflect for a moment on our day and offer thanks for the moments where we felt in our hearts the love of Jesus. And, we can ask that tomorrow we can feel the Lord's own love and compassion for us - and beg that we can pass that along.

Like Peter in Friday's gospel, we have denied Jesus many times in our lives but he looks at us again with love and simply says, "Follow me."

Beatification of Fr. Sebastian Rale, S.J.

“Eternal Father, grant that Sebastian Rale, martyr of the faith among the Abenakis of Maine, will be raised to the altar of the blessed. Through his intercession, we pray that your divine favor will be manifest among us so that we may return praise to Your eternal glory. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, world without end. Amen”

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Summer Fun Raffle

It is now clear that the large gathering we expect and en-joy at the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner planned for May 7th was not possible. We do want to have this festive event but it will have to be postponed until it is safe for us to gather. Last year we had at least 150 people there and we hope for more this time. So watch the bulletins and announcements as we go forward.

Similar uncertainty about the Summer Fun BBQ and Raffle - perhaps a late summer gathering. We're not giving up, just waiting a bit!

Your faces....

We're looking for your faces for our parish website newly activated parish Facebook page. Send us your photos (none will be identified) at a parish event or working in your garden, baking bread, playing cards, etc. A parish is its people, not its buildings. We're looking for you! Thanks!!

Survey Study Seeking Volunteers Members of our parish have been invited to join in this study sponsored by the University of New England. I encourage that participation. Fr Paul SJ

In the past few weeks our lives have changed dramatically as the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread throughout the world. The Center of Excellence in Aging at University of New England is conducting a research study to explore the attitudes and behaviors of older adults in relation to the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

We invite adults aged 55+ years to complete a 10-15 minute survey. Responses will be kept confidential.

Please call or email Dr. Regi Robnett ([email protected]: 207-221-4102) for more information. Thank you.

Or, register online at: https://redcap.une.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=9JRPPCHF3H. A survey link is sent 1-3 days after registration.

What's on your mind?

Each day I get and respond to many emails and have been attending Zoom meetings of our Pastoral Council and Social Jus-tice and Peace Ministry and others. I believe we are trying though this bulletin and at livestream Masses to keep you up to date on what is happening in the parish. Many of you have been generously continuing your financial support, and a big thanks for that.

And yet it is hard not to be able to hear from you. The Parish Office (and I) haven’t heard much from you. If you do have thoughts or questions, or are in need please let us know. We have for some weeks been seeking nominations to our Parish Pastoral Council but have not had any. The Council is an important part of our parish life. Please consider who would be good candidates for this valuable ministry and let us know.

The example of so many people in our churches and communities who are extending themselves and even putting them-selves at risk, to help others is inspiring and helps me at least to see that they far outnumber those who make the news with their protests.

Families

These days we have likely seen and/or heard many references to our families. We offer this prayer for families, whether gathered together or held apart at this point.

God of joy and love, You gave us the gift of family; open our minds and hearts, so we may see our own family as a gift from you. Help us to make our family a place where your love and joy are found. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our families may be “families of intention” not only those of blood relation, and they take different forms and shapes.

Contemplation and Action

Pope Francis reminds us that there is ‘no stereotype of the ideal family but, rather, a mosaic made up of many different realities, with all the joys, hopes and problems.’ Share some of the joys, hopes, and challenges that make up the mosaic of your family.

By phone, Facetime, or other means, reach out to a family member from whom you have become disconnected.

Prayer to the Holy Family from “Amoris Laetitia”

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, in you, we contemplate the splendour of true love, to you, we turn with trust.

Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families, too, may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches.

Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection, and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing.

Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan.

The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC), a national organization, is recruiting individuals over the age of 50 to serve the poor and grow in faith. Portland, Maine is the newest IVC region in the United States. In addition to service, volunteers meet once a month with a Spiritual Reflector and gather monthly with other IVC volunteers. Due to our world-wide pandemic, some of our Portland placements have paused their activities; however, once the situation im-proves, service opportunities will open again at Cheverus High School, Catholic Charities, the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project, Partners for World Health, STRIVE, Portland Adult Educa-tion, St. Brigid's School in Portland and Holy Cross School in South Portland. Please give consid-eration to becoming an IVC service corps member. If you are interested in additional infor-

mation or an application, please contact Katherine Crosson, IVC – Portland Regional Director, at 207-808-8029. Check out the IVC Website at http//www.ivcusa.org to learn more about the organization and, specifically, about IVC Portland.

Novena for All Young Adults in Maine Set for May 22-30 Aware of the challenges that young adults are facing during this time of pandemic and conscious that they cannot present-ly gather together, the Diocese of Portland’s Office of Lifelong Faith Formation has crafted a novena for young adults.

The novena will begin on Friday, May 22, and will run through Saturday, May 30, with an optional prayer of thanksgiving on May 31 (Solemnity of Pentecost).

Each day of the novena is focused on praying for a different young adult demographic: college seniors, those who live alone and cannot be with family, the underemployed and unemployed, those struggling with mental health issues, couples in marriage preparation and who have postponed weddings, all married couples, expectant mothers, families, and all young adults, especially those in the healthcare profession.

“Each day will have a different saint interceding and guiding us as we pray for that particular audience of young adults,” said Hannah Gonneville of the Office of Lifelong Faith Formation.

There are several ways to participate. Young adults can register online at www.portlanddiocese.org/content/novena-young-adults to receive a daily email with the full prayer or visit that page for the information. In addition, a daily graphic will be posted to the Maine Young Adult Catholics Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/MaineCatholicYoungAdults) with the intention for that day and the saint that will guide the group.

“During this time of pandemic, I wanted to gather our young adult community together in prayer,” said Hannah, who wrote the novena herself. “The Office of Lifelong Faith Formation had done novenas as a substitute for other gatherings such as the Women’s Conference, and so I knew I wanted to find a novena related to the challenges that young adults find themselves in now.”

For more information, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/content/novena-young-adults or email Hannah at [email protected].

08 Seventh Sunday of Easter

Memorial Day - Monday May 25 - Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memo-rial Day 2020 occurs on Monday, May 25.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

Early Observances of Memorial Day - The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any con-flict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradu-ally came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military per-sonnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghani-stan.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also de-clared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. Some people wear a red poppy in remem-brance of those fallen in war—a tradition that began with a World War I poem. On a less somber note, many people take weekend trips or throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because Memorial Day weekend—the long week-end comprising the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day itself—unofficially marks the beginning of summer.

This year it may be that the trips, parades and large gatherings will generally be "on hold." Perhaps that will give us a chance to remember why the day is a holiday to remember and give thanks for those who have sacrificed their lives for us. And pray for those who are making that sacrifice today.

St. Philip Neri 1515 - 1595 - On Tuesday May 26 the Church remembers St. Philip Neri. He was declared a saint on March 12, 1622, the same day as Ignatius of Loyola SJ and Francis Xavier, SJ. St. Philip was noted for his work with the poor and his friendly character. He was the founder of the Congregation of the Oratory. He whole-heartedly desired the reform of the Catholic Church and worked toward that with a sense of gentleness and friendship, rather than criticism and harshness, qualities for which Pope Francis is known today. His efforts to reach out to the lay people of Rome and not simply associate with the clergy made him one of the great figures in the Counter Reformation of the Catholic Church. Sad-ly, the Catholic Church had fallen into clericalism. He soon earned the title, "Apostle of Rome."

From 1946 - 1969 New England Jesuits operated St. Philip Neri School for delayed vocations for veterans of military service who desired to enter the religious life. Its purpose was to teach Latin so the students could go on to seminaries, which required a foundation of Latin for acceptance.

Our Lady of Hope invites you to a Pentecost Novena and Blessing - Ascension Thursday is May 21. The time be-tween Ascension Thursday and Pentecost is nine days, the first “novena” as the disciples prayed awaiting the gift of the Holy Spirit. You are invited to join in a brief reflective prayer after the evening Mass livestreamed each day starting this Thursday May 21 and ending on Sat. May 30th. The suggested reflection is short and in the style of lectio divina. It would be helpful to have a piece of paper and pen with you so you can write down the Scripture passage for your pray-er. Livestreamed from Our Lady of Hope Parish following Mass each evening. The Mass schedule is Monday – Friday 7 PM Mass, Saturday 4:30 PM and Sunday 5 PM. www.ladyofhopemaine.org Note attendance at the Mass and reflection is livestream only. On Pentecost Sunday, May 31 we will be celebrating “drive by Pentecost blessings.” 1:00 -2:00 PM at the parking lot at St. Joseph Church/St. Brigid School, 673 Stevens Ave, Portland. Use the St. Brigid “drive through” pattern, entering by Elmwood St. and leaving by Stevens Ave. All are welcome.

Our Lady of Hope Parish 09

Moving toward re-opening Masses at OLH

Many, Catholic parishes are looking to re-open Masses starting in early June. The consensus view of the Parish Staff and members of the Parish Finance and Pastoral Councils here is that we will continue to plan for re-opening but not take that step right now. We are going to delay for the following reasons: • The guidance of the CDC is that early reopening could well be dangerous • A large percentage of you, our parish members, are over 65 and/or have underlying health issues; the direction is that people in these categories should not be attending. We know many of you want to, but offering Mass is not safe for all of us now. In early March we had calls/notes from adult children asking us to stop Masses because their elderly parents would attend, even if it is not safe. That reality has not changed yet. There are also practical difficulties in any re-opening now: • At best we could offer one Mass per weekend at each church in June. This would allow only about 90 people to attend (for both Masses) since the total permitted in the church (50) also includes everyone involved in the Mass. This would surely mean some of you would be turned away at the door. No one among the staff, Finance or Pastoral Councils wanted us to have to refuse any of you. • We would need to put in place some kind of “reservation system” requiring you to register in advance to attend Mass. This, too, poses problems and would likely exclude many of you. • We would have to “check in” everyone attending. You would need to wear masks or not be permitted inside. What to do if someone refuses and insists on entering? • After each use the church would need to be sanitized. We are now seeking to order the “fogger” disinfection machine that makes that process quicker and easier. These are now all on back-order. Until we have this piece of equipment, sanitizing the church would require a Team to do that after each Mass and would take 1-2 hours each time, perhaps more.

We recognize that this will be disappointing to some of you. We are continuing to work toward re-opening in a safe and welcoming way and will keep you updated as soon as there can be any changes. We are maintaining all our livestream Masses and know that many of you have appreciated this way to attend. If you are aware of a friend or neighbor without internet and you can safely share the livestream Mass with them, that would be great. We are also looking at other ways to reach out (ex. May 13 we had an outdoor May Crowning at St. Brigid School – that is now available on the School - https://www.facebook.com/stbrigidschoolportlandme and Parish - https://www.facebook.com/ourladyofhopemaine/ Facebook pages).

We have scheduled an outdoor drive-through blessing on Pentecost Sunday, May 31st, 1:00 - 2:00 PM in the parking lot between St. Joseph Church and St. Brigid School. See Page 8 for more information.

What more can we do? Please, let us know when we call you to check in, or you can send us a note by email or thorough our Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/ourladyofhopemaine/ ). ... Let us continue to pray for one another and for a cure to this virus, the only sure way to go forward in safety.

We often refer to this prayer, a favorite of St. Ignatius. The prayer can take many forms and focus on different areas of our lives. This one calls us to be aware of creation and our care for this great gift: Ecological Examen by: Joseph Carver, SJ

All creation reflects the beauty and blessing of God’s image. Where was I most aware of this today? Can I identify and pin-point how I made a conscious effort to care for God’s creation during this day? What challenges or joys do I experience as I recall my care for creation? How can I repair breaks in my relationship with creation, in my unspoken sense of superiority? As I imagine tomorrow, I ask for the grace to see the Incarnate Christ in the dynamic interconnections of all Creation. Conclude with the prayer of Jesus: The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. www.ignatianspirituality.com

I had some concerns, as I suspect most people entering senior living may have, regarding our social lives and whether we would develop friends here. Not only have my wife and I been able to maintain existing relationships but we have met several new people here… people we now consider to be our friends. The life enrichment program is designed to nurture interaction between people. The hostess in the Main Dining Room seats new guests with compatible table mates and within days, individuals become neighbors and friends. The floor we live on has become our new neighborhood. The people living here seem to understand that all of us have been new to The Park Danforth at some point. Everyone is so friendly here. My wife and I could not feel more at home.
