Dear IC parishioners,

As you know, last weekend we kicked off a landmark fundraising effort entitled Hope for the Future, a

comprehensive campaign for the Paulist Fathers. This important initiative aims to solidify the future of the Paulists for many years to come.

More than 17 volunteers have already stepped forward in support of the campaign by accepting a position on our Campaign Committee. If a volunteer reaches out to talk to you about the campaign, please embrace them with open hearts and minds as they are doing so as a favor to me, Paulist President Fr. Eric Andrews, and this campaign.

This campaign will ensure that my fellow Paulist Fathers will be able to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ well into the future. This campaign will ensure that we, as a missionary society of priests, will be able to recruit and educate men as novices and seminarians, who will eventually serve at places like our Immaculate Conception. Lastly, while this campaign will put us Paulists on stable footing, this campaign is for you – our faithful parishioners – as well. It will enable us to continue ministering to you, meeting our parishioners where they are.

With that in mind, each Paulist parish and foundation around the country is being asked to do its part in leading the campaign to success by inviting parishioners to prayerfully consider a three-year pledge to the campaign. Our parish goal is $664,000. To date, we have already raised $195,034.92 toward our goal – just over 29%!

You will be hearing more about this effort in the coming weeks and months from me and your fellow parishioners, who are assisting me with this project. For now, I ask that you join me in prayer that the Hope for the Future campaign may be successful. And please keep your minds, ears and hearts open to the message of this landmark initiative. If we all work together, I know we will be richly blessed.

Sincerely in Christ,

Gospel Reflection

The second part of today’s Gospel contains a strong message for those who share the responsibility of fostering faith. It is indeed an awesome responsibility. Today’s Gospel reminds us that faith is a lifelong journey toward God. We don’t always get it all or even get it right. But we pray for the grace to acknowledge and build upon even the smallest signs of faith, in ourselves and in others.

There are plenty of obstacles that might prevent the growth of faith. As you gather as a family, observe that there are things in our lives that nurture our faith and things that can hinder it. Talk about some of the things that nurture our faith—healthy family relationships, healthy friendships, good literature, and so on. Name some of the things that might be an obstacle to faith—unhealthy relationships, scandals, and so on. Jesus teaches us in today’s Gospel that we are to do everything we can to help one another have faith in Jesus and do all that we can to avoid creating obstacles that might hinder another person’s faith.

Happy Birthday Fr. Tim!

We hope he had a very happy birthday last Thurs., Sept. 23.

40 Days for Life National Campaign: The Knoxville Council of the Knights of Columbus invite all parish members to join them as they participate in the 40 Days for Life National Campaign.

Our belief is that with God all things are possible. People of faith and conscience should unite for 40 Days of Prayer, Fasting, and Visibility to witness by their Peaceful presence and send a powerful message to the community about the reality of abortion.

The 40 Days for Life Campaign will be holding Prayer Services outside abortion facilities across the country for 40 days, 24 hours a day. As we affirm our belief in the dignity for life in all stages, The Knights of Columbus /Immaculate Conception Church will be gathering in front of Planned Parenthood, 710 N Cherry Street, from 10 a.m. until noon every Tuesday, Sept. 28 through Oct. 30. Fr. Tim Sullivan will lead the Rosary at 10 a.m. We invite everyone to join us. If you are unable to be there you can join any group throughout the week or simply join us in the Rosary wherever you are.

St. Anne's

is seeking members to cook one-pot meals or soups at home for

hungry folks who can't easily make a hearty, healthy meal for themselves. Current members have made over 100 meals for our neighbors at Summit Towers - THANK YOU! We are looking to expand our reach to be able to feed more people in need. If you know of other people we can serve or want to cook for "SASS," please contact Caroline Zengel, at [email protected] or (865) 335-2885, or check out the small table by the windows in the parish hall for more information.

Youth Ministry

Bicycle Program: When Father Michael McGivney established the Knights of Columbus in 1882, he sought to establish a fraternal Order whose members live the Christian virtues

through the principals of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity.

As we try to live out the principles of Charity, through good works and greater service to our community, Knoxville Council 645 has partnered with Ladies of Charity to assist those in need through a bicycle program. Our goal is to put bicycles into the hands of the needy. In most cases, this is their only means of transportation. We are also helping them repair and keep their bicycles running.

If you have a bicycle that you no longer need and would like to donate, you can drop them off at the Ladies of Charity building, 120 West Baxter Avenue. We are also in need of bicycle locks and chains to keep them from being stolen. If you would like to help in this ministry, we do a bicycle repair workshop every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Ladies of Charity building.

IC Women’s Group Upcoming Meeting

There will be a meeting of the ICWG on Sun., Oct. 10 in the Parish Hall, starting at 9:30 a.m. Box of Joy and Craft Fair will be discussed. All are welcome!

St. John XXIII Parish is in need of a music director for the Saturday 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 5:30 p.m. services. We would prefer someone who can play guitar or piano and sing. Currently, rehearsal for each Mass is held one hour before the service begins, so time commitment would be four hours total for the weekend. Please contact the parish office, at (865) 523-7931 or [email protected], for information.

Our parish is collecting items to be placed in a Bag of Blessings that will be given to the homeless in Knoxville. Needed items: adult

socks, sanitizing wipes, tooth brush & paste, and chapstick. Water, fruit cup/applesauce, granola bars, cheese or PB crackers and tuna salad kits are food items needed. Donated items may be left in a tub in the back of the church. Financial donations are most appreciated. Thank you for your support of this needed project.
