Dear Brothers and Sisters, With great joy we welcome Fr. Christopher Bethge to St. Brigid’s this weekend! Fr. Bethge is the new Vocations Director for our Diocese. !at means that his job is to #nd and recruit future priests! Fr. Bethge will be preaching at all the Masses this weekend. Wouldn’t it be beautiful to see one of the young men of our parish ordained a priest — what a joy and honor that would be for our parish! It’s our job to pray for vocations and to encourage the young men in our families to consider the possibility of dedicating their lives to God in this way. I have to tell you — for me… its been the best decision I have ever made!

THE FORTY HOURS DEVOTION Let us ask ourselves, in adoring Christ who is really present in the Eucharist: do I let myself be transformed by him? Do I let the Lord who gives himself to me, guide me to going out ever more from my little enclosure, in order to give, to share, to love him and others? (Pope Francis, Homily for Corpus Christi 2013)

The Forty Hours Eucharistic Devotion manifests the most powerful fact of Christianity, Christ’s Eucharistic Presence, with a rich variety of expressions: exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Benediction, prayers and processions. Two outstanding developments in Eucharistic devotion during the Middle Ages contributed to the creation of the Forty Hours Devotion. The first occurred in 1264, when the Feast of Corpus Christi was extended to the Universal Church. It had previously been celebrated only in the diocese of Liège, Belgium, inspired by a nun’s vision in 1210. The Feast of Corpus Christi popularized Eucharistic processions. The second step was the official inauguration of the Forty Hours Devotion in Milan in 1530. St. Philip Neri and St. Ignatius Loyola adopted the devotion in reparation for sin. Pope Clement VIII assigned the devotion in turns to all the churches of Rome. St. John Neumann, fourth bishop of Philadelphia, brought the Forty Hours Devotion to the United States. In a time of strong anti-Catholic sentiment, he created a program for his diocese so that all the churches could participate in Forty Hours. He composed a liturgical text to go with the devotion and arranged for indulgences to be made available participants.

In the Bible the number 40 is associated with a sacred period of time: the rain at the time of the flood of Noah lasted 40 days and nights, and the Hebrews wandered in the desert for 40 years on the way to the Promised Land. Jesus fasted for 40 days before beginning his public ministry. The 40 Hours Devotion remembers that traditional “forty-hour period” from our Lord’s burial until the resurrection.

The devotion begins with the Celebration of Mass, followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. For forty hours, spread over three days, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar during which there is the Celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, quiet time of meditation on Sacred Scripture, the public praying of the Holy Rosary, and Confessions. At the Conclusion of the Forty Hours there is a Solemn Closing Mass with a Eucharistic Procession throughout the Church and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. All are welcome to share in this time of prayer and celebration with the community in praise and thanksgiving for so great a gift - the gift of the Holy Eucharist.

While the Forty Hours Devotion nurtures the love of the faithful for our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, three special dimensions have also surrounded this devotion: the protection from evil and temptation; reparation for our own sins and for the poor souls in Purgatory; and deliverance from political, material, or spiritual calamities. Here the faithful implore our Lord to pour forth His abundant graces not only for themselves, but their neighbors, not only for their own personal needs, but for those of the world.

The Forty Hours Devotion provides a wonderful opportunity for the spiritual growth of each person and the parish as a whole. It can be seen almost like a parish mini-retreat or mission. In a world where temptation and evil abound, where devotion to the Mass and our Lord in the Holy Eucharist have declined, where the practice of penance and confession have been forgotten, we need the Forty Hours Devotion more than ever.

LA DEVOCIÓN DE LAS CUARENTA HORAS Preguntémonos, adorando a Cristo, quien está realmente presente en la Eucaristía: ¿me dejo transformar por Él? ¿Dejo que el Señor, quien se entregó por mí, me guíe a salir cada vez más de mi pequeño recinto para dar, compartir y amarlo a Él y a los demás? (Papa Francisco, Homilía, Corpus Christi 2013)

La Devoción Eucarística de las Cuarenta Horas, manifiesta el hecho más poderoso del cristianismo, la Presencia Eucarística de Cristo, con una rica variedad de expresiones: exposición del Santísimo Sacramento, Bendición, oraciones y procesiones.fl Dos progresos sobresalientes en la devoción eucarística durante la Edad Media, contribuyeron a la creación de la Devoción de las Cuarenta Horas. El primer paso ocurrió en 1264, cuando la Fiesta del Corpus Christi se extendió a la Iglesia Universal. Anteriormente se había celebrado solo en la diócesis de Lieja, Bélgica, inspirada en la visión de una monja en 1210. La fiesta del Corpus Christi popularizó las procesiones eucarísticas. La Devoción Eucarística de las Cuarenta Horas recuerda ese tradicional "período de cuarenta horas" desde el entierro de nuestro Señor hasta la resurrección.

La devoción comienza con la celebración de la Santa Misa, seguida de la exposición del Santísimo Sacramento.El Santísimo Sacramento está expuesto en el altar durante cuarenta horas, repartidas en tres días, en los cuales se celebra la Liturgia de las Horas, hay momentos de silencio, tiempo de meditación sobre la Sagrada Escritura, oración pública como el Santo Rosario y confesiones. Al final de las cuarenta horas se celebra la Santa Misa de clausura solemnemente con una procesión eucarística en toda la Iglesia y la bendición del Santísimo Sacramento. Todos son bienvenidos a compartir este tiempo de oración y celebración con la comunidad en alabanza y acción de gracias por tan grandioso regalo: el regalo de la Sagrada Eucaristía.

Mientras que la Devoción Eucarística de las Cuarenta Horas nutre el amor de los fieles por nuestro Señor en el Santísimo Sacramento, tres dimensiones especiales también han rodeado esta devoción: la protección del mal y la tentación; la reparación por nuestros propios pecados y por las pobres almas del purgatorio; y la liberación de calamidades políticas, materiales y/o espirituales. Aquí los fieles imploran a nuestro Señor que derrame sus abundantes gracias no solo para ellos, sino también para sus vecinos, no solo para sus propias necesidades personales, sino también para las del mundo.

La Devoción Eucarística de las Cuarenta Horas brinda una maravillosa oportunidad para el crecimiento espiritual de cada persona y de la parroquia en su conjunto. Se puede ver casi como un mini retiro o misión parroquial. En un mundo donde abundan la tentación y el mal, donde la devoción a la Misa y a nuestro Señor en la Sagrada Eucaristía han disminuido, donde se ha olvidado la práctica de la penitencia y la confesión, necesitamos la Devoción Eucarística de las Cuarenta Horas hoy más que nunca.
