Learning certainly can be fun! When asked what was good about today, a 1 st grader responded immediately, “Play and learning.” She knows! Leaving the 4 th grade, several proclaimed that the best thing about 4 th grade is their teacher! Learning + fun + students + teachers = a good day at school. On Thursday we will be celebrating the Feast of St. Francis with the Blessing of the Animals at 2:30pm. This saint, identified with peace as illustrated in the song, The Prayer of St. Francis, and known for his great love of creation is a wonderful model for all of us. Francis of Assisi was poor only that he might be Christ-like. He recognized creation as another manifestation of the beauty of God. In 1979, he was named patron of ecology. He did great penance— apologizing to “Brother Body” later in life—that he might be totally disciplined for the will of God. Francis’ poverty had a sister, Humility, by which he meant total dependence on the good God. But all this was, as it were, preliminary to the heart of his spirituality: living the gospel life, summed up in the charity of Jesus and perfectly expressed in the Eucharist.” (from www.franciscanmedia.org) May all of us, teachers and parents, learn from the children that we need play in our lives and learn from St. Francis that we need to be totally dependent upon God. In God’s Peace, S. Janice Therese, O.P.
