1 April 10, 2007 OUR GRIFFIN HERITAGE Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM 2 EARWOOD (THOMAS 1 ) was born Bet. 1710 - 1730 in England, and died in TN. He married ELIZABETH REDMAN, daughter of JOHN REDMAN and REBECCA. She was born 1734 in Westmoreland Co., VA, and died July 29, 1822 in Rutherford Co., TN. Notes for WILLIAM EARWOOD: "There are families some members of which from generation to generation are leading and distinguished men renowned alike in war and peace; who tower above the great majority of their fellow citizens through long periods. Such were the Lees of Virginia, the Harrisons of Virginia, Illinois, and Indiana, and the Adams of Massachusetts. There are certain individuals of families that stand alone or who are distinguished far above any of the name, whose parentage gave no promise of renown and whose name is a measure died with them. Of such were Abraham Lincoln and Patrick Henry. There are others called in England the great middle class. They are well educated, industrious, thrifty, and hospitable. They are law abiding citizens, well enough to do to practise the amenities and courtesies of civilized life, brave and patriotic enough to answer to the call of their country when menaced by foes foreign or domestic. These haave been the backbone and bulwarks of our states and nation. They may not furnish presidents and governors in times of peace, nor generals in war times, but in war they are the men behind the guns and in peace stand for law and order, morality and education. Such a family have been the Yearwoods. Some of them came here in colonial times. It is but natural that long residence and ancestral traditions should intensify a love for home and country. The native, other things being equal, is more patriotic and has a greater desire for the prosperity of his state than a late arrival form the fatherland whether it is Italy, Germany, or Russia. Being educated here he better understands the genius of government. The colonists mostly came from England, they of course spoke the English language and their customs and laws were taken therefrom. Therefore an English immigrant actuated by a love of freedom was almost one of us before he arrived here. For these reasons we feel it not inapt to speak of the ancestors of the Yearwoods that came to Sweetwater Valley. William Yearwood, whom we call the first, that is the first who settled in this country of the Yearwood family, came from England. The approximate date even is not known but likely somewhere from 1730 to 1740 and made his home in Charleston, SC. He there reared a family. He lived to be 90 years of age. This was remarkable as at that time Charleston and the country round were very much subject to yellow and miasmatic fevers which often proved fatal. He was an extremely expert fencing master and taught the youth of his city that art. To know how to use the sword was part of a liberal education. It was a day when an insult was wiped out with blood on the field of honor. To fight a duel was not contrary to law and many a one was fought with swords as weapons. When the Revolutionary War began, William Yearwood, the I, was likely of too advanced an age to stand hardships of a campaign, or from his profession he would have become a soldier. No mention is made of his enlisting. However his son, William Yearwood , whom for convenience we will call the II, was a member of Captain William Alexander's company and served under General William Sumpter during the Revolutionary War. He was wounded in the arm at the Battle of Ramsours Mill Pond and Mrs. Ramsour cut the bullet out with her husband's razor. He was the ancestor of William Yearwood who lived in Sweetwater Valley." under Capt. Reynolds, he marched to Swilford court house - the whole of Reynolds company and himself among thenumber, were..the baggage during the battle "stiking quarter". After this battle he marched across Peoce river to theEutaw Springs, and was in that battle. He there received a wound from a bull just about the right knee - but having onleather breeches, and the fence of the bull being weak he recovered entirely from the wound, though the scar is still to beseen. After the battle he with others pursued the British a few miles, and then returned and buried the dead. CaptainRennels was wounded in a severe manner - The morning after the battle the wounded soldiers of the British, stated thatthey (the enemy) had received news of the surrender of Coornwallis and that this was the reason of their retreat towardsCharleston. Two or three days after Capt. Reynold's (or Prusuels?) company of which this declaimant was a private, wasdischarged, at about twelve or fifteen miles from the battleground. He does not remember the day on which he wasdischarged - but it was two or three days after the above named battle. He was in service eight months and some days -he did not reach home til November - Being young when in service knew but few of the regular officers, or even theirnames, further than he has stated. He has no documentary evidence from which he can prove his services. Thetestimony of the only living witness by whom he can prove his services (Mary Ann Sailors) is hereto....- He was born in Halifax County, N. Carolina on the 6 June seventeed hundred and sixty-two. He has a very old record of hisage in his bible. He lived in North Carolina til 1805 when he moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee, where he stillresides. He names to the Court the following person who can certify to his verasity, to wit: Rev. Robt. L. Fajan, HughKirk, Wm. Gilliason, Wm. B. Lillons. This depos... would have applied before this for a pension, but being in tolerablecircumstances, he did not feel that need of it that he now does - nor did he know until he found Mrs. Salors that he couldprove any thin g of his services. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to be pension or annuity, except thepresent, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any State or Territory.
