LOS CABOS, MEXICO:Querencia sits along the Los Cabos cor-ridor between the tourist centric Cabo San Lucas and moresedate San Jose del Cabo.“I like to think Querencia is a blend of the best of both
towns,” explained Nacho Bancalari, general manager. “Ourarchitecture is a mirror image of the craftsmanship found in
many historic haciendas in San Jose del Cabo and our social cal-endar is straight from the playbook from a five-star resort inCabo San Lucas. At our opening season party, we offered acomplimentary tasting rare tequilas that put a spring in the stepof our 200 members and guests in attendance.”
FAMILIES COMING TOGETHER
The innate service culture in Mexico is taught from an early age.“The definition of ‘family’ in our country extends far beyondimmediate blood relatives,” continued Bancalari. “Not long ago,Cabo was a tiny fishing village wherein locals knew and lookedafter one another. I like to refer to it as a culture of care. Thatsense of community is a guiding principal at Querencia.

“Years ago, Oprah Winfrey encouraged everyone to ‘pay itforward’ in some small way to your friends and neighbors. It wasa mania in America, while powerful when applied, seemed tofade away. The concept of pay it forward is a fundamental wayof life in Mexico.”
THROUGH THEIR EYES
With a newly minted MBA from Notre Dame, Ryan Elstonarrived in Los Cabos nearly a decade ago scouting property. “The real estate market then, as today, remains one of the
strongest and most resilient on earth,” said Elston. “During myfirst trip to Cabo back in 2008, I stopped at Querencia.Immediately I could tell it was built right. Living in Aspen,Colorado, I understood the challenges and costs of building intorugged topography.” ➤

“THE SPANISH WORD ‘QUERENCIA’ DESCRIBES A PLACE where one feels safe, a place from which one’s strength of characteris drawn, a place where one feels at home. It comes from the verb‘querer,’ which means to desire, to want. What a beautiful concept:‘A place in which we know exactly who we are. The place from which we speak our deepest beliefs.’”– JORGE CARRERA, DEVELOPER OF QUERENCIA
Developer foursome Jorge Carrera, Tom McCloskey, William Jordan, and RyanElston have over a century of real estate experience among themselves.
Sold on Querencia’s lifestyle, Ryan and his wife Laurenpurchased a casita. “The fact Querencia is truly private [oneof the only completely private clubs in Cabo] and providedbreathability sold us,” recalled Elston. “Density was a strongconsideration for us. Having space between neighbors is a
strong selling point.“During my years at Notre
Dame, there were several pro-fessors who stressed the impor-tance of investing in what youknow and use. I guess I took thatadvice to heart. After a decade asa homeowner at Querencia, Imade an offer to partner in thenext stage of the club’s future. After close to a year of negotia-tions, I am now one of four equi-ty partners in the development.“Querencia has established
itself as a premier golf commu-nity,” continued Elston. “I amout to transition our club’s rep-utation to the private lifestylecommunity of Los Cabos. With
three young daughters, I know the importance of a familyinclusive club. If I can’t see the value for my family, I knowfuture member families will feel the same.”A team of land planners is currently evaluating future
development options at Querencia. “Good things, big andsmall, are in the works,” smiled Elston. “Our family favoritesinclude Querencia’s new kid-friendly water slide and icecream bar, while my wife and I have become regulars on theclub’s new downhill flow trail for mountain biking.“We are currently reviewing conceptual plans to expand
Querencia’s Beach Club to provide sporting activities tooffer something for everyone. Nothing is built on the come.We want to be careful to preserve the essence of Querencia.”
WHERE DESERT MEETS SEA
“Although the Los Cabos area is the fishing capital ofMexico, golf is a big deal here,” said Tom Fazio. “There area lot of fine courses, both public and private. I believeQuerencia is the ‘best in breed.’ The private communityhas the finest clubhouse, best golf course, and the bestlocation.“The club sits on a large site. During my first visit, I
was blown away,” recalled Fazio. “The mountains are offto the east and the ocean is just to the west. The landform is long and linear. Several of my holes almost feel asif you can touch the ocean, and, as you weave your wayup the foothills, the views get grander and grander. I havenever had a site to work with like this before. At the high-est point on the golf course, you are up about 800 feetwith unbelievable views of downtown San Jose and theSea of Cortez. Querencia leaves you with an indelibleimpression.” ■

LOS CABOS MEANS “WHERE LAND ENDS.” The tip of the peninsula is surrounded by water, with the Pacific Ocean to the West and Sea of Cortez to the East. Surfers favor the slightly calmer and warmer waters of the Sea of Cortez abutting San Jose del Cabo.
“THE NEW PARTNERS AT QUERENCIA are a good fit. I am excited to see how the community continues to develop. They have the utmost integrity and are great people.” – TOM FAZIO
THE CLUBHOUSE VILLAGE, perched on a hilltop overlooking the Sea of Cortezand Fazio’s golf course, is modeledafter a Spanish town square with aseries of club buildings encircling aplaza. The fresh scent of bloominghuele de noche flowers (jasmine) permeates the air. There are eight fountains both indoors and out. Nomatter where you are, the relaxingsound of water surrounds you. Hand carved woodwork throughoutoffers an example of artesian culturein Mexico and vibrant work of David Villaseñor from Guadalajarabrightens the interior design. For more information, please visit:QCabo.com.
Querencia is ranked the No. 1 golf course in Mexico by GolfWeek. The Fazio design plays through deep arroyos and arid plateaus.
