I have to study for the Spanish exam.

One of the special, idiomatic uses of tener is with the relator que plus an infinitive to express the idea of to have to (do something).

There are other common expressions that use tener where English uses the verb to be. Note that many of these refer to things we might feel, such as hunger, thirst, cold, etc.

¿Tienes hambre? Are you hungry?

No, pero tengo frío. No, but I’m cold.

Tenemos prisa. We’re in a hurry.

Tener expresions are formed with the verb tener and NOUNS

LITERALLY translated:

• calor = heat prisa = rush

• cuidado = care razón = reason

• sed = thirst sueño = sleepiness

• frío = cold miedo = fear

• hambre = hunger suerte = luck

Tener expressions are formed with the verb tener and NOUNS

• Since the words used with tener expressions are nouns, you don’t change them to match the subject of the sentence.

• Ex: Nosotros tenemos hambre. • Since hambre is a noun literally meaning hunger,

it doesn’t change to match the subject “nosotros.”

• In fact, if you modify the noun in the tener expression with an adjective or adverb, you will match that adjective or adverb with the noun.

• Ex: Los chicos tienen mala suerte.

• Suerte doesn’t change to match “chicos”

• The adjective “mala” matches suerte (feminine noun meaning “luck”).

Mucho or mucha, depending on the gender of the noun they modify, are used as intensifiers with the tener expressions.
