To commemorate the birth anniversary of the Late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, the

Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES), Government of India, celebrate

20th of August annually as the National Non-conventional Energy Day (Akshaya Urja

Diwas). As per the decision of MNES as well as the instructions issued by the Government of

Orissa, in this regard, 20th of August will now be celebrated as the Rajiv Gandhi Akshaya Urja

Diwas (RGAUD). Effective organisation of various programmes on this day would popularise

Renewable Energy Systems and services and raise awareness of the masses regarding renewable

energy.

To make the celebration a success, the following events were organised at Bhubaneswar.

DIFFERENT COMPETITIONS (18.08.2006):

As a part of the celebrations of RGAUD-2006, the

following competitions were held among the

school and college students located in and around

Bhubaneswar.

1. Prior to the date and time of the

competitions, intimations were given to all

the schools and colleges in Bhubaneswar

Municipality Area by the District Inspector of Schools, Bhubaneswar.

2. Competition were held on 18.08.2006 in the premises of the Capital Girls’ High School,

Unit IV, Bhubaneswar.

3. The competitions were conducted by

experienced teachers selected by the Addl.

District Magistrate / DI of Schools, Bhubaneswar.

4. About 200 schools/colleges were intimated

to send their students for participating in

different competitions being organised for the

celebration of RGAUD-2006.

5. A video coverage was provided for all the competitions from the beginning to the end.

6. Still Photographs were also taken to record the events.

7. The quiz programme was conducted by the eminent artists of Doordarshan Kendra,

Bhubaneswar.

8. Prior intimation was also given to all leading dailies and media personalities for wide-

spread media coverage of these events.

9. T-shirts, received from IREDA, were distributed amongst the participants at the time of

their registration.

ORGANISATION OF SEMINAR (19.08.2006)

As decided on the preparatory meeting held for the purpose under the able chairmanship of

the Hon’ble Minister of Science & Technology Department, Orissa, a seminar on the topic

“Renewable Energy in the Uplift of Rural People” among the college students of Degree level

of all the colleges (both Govt. & Non-Govt.) located in and around Bhubaneswar city was held

on 19.08.2006 at B.J.B.(Autonomous) College, Bhubaneswar.

The main objective of the seminar was to

generate adequate awareness amongst the

people of Orissa through the students masses on

Renewable Energy Programmes and Appropriate

Rural Technologies. The topic of the seminar was

“Renewable Energy in the uplift of Rural People”

which has great relevance in day to day lives of

rural people.

1. Prior to the date and time of the Seminar, intimations were given to the Principals of all

Government and Non-Government Colleges located at Bhubaneswar by the Director, Higher

Education, Orissa.

2. The seminar was held on 19.08.2005 in the premises of B.J.B. College, Bhubaneswar.

3. The seminar was conducted by the Professors selected by the Principal, B.J.B. College as

decided by the Director, Higher Education, Orissa.

4. Three Judges were invited by the organiser of the seminar to select the best three of the

papers presented by the participating students in the seminar.

5. About 29 Colleges were intimated to send their students for participating in the aforesaid

seminar being organised for the celebration of RGAUD – 2006.

6. A video coverage was provided for the seminar from the beginning to the end.

7. Prior intimation was also given to all leading dailies and media personalities for wide

spread media coverage of the seminar.

8. T – shirts received from IREDA were distributed among the participants at the time of

their registration.

9. Before starting the seminar Mr. Ajit Bharthuar, Chief Executive, OREDA gave keynote

address.

10. Before closing the seminar Dr. S.K. Khuntia, Scientist, Regional Research Laboratory gave

a Power Point Presentation on Renewable Energy Devices to the students.

11. The following students were selected for awarding prizes on presentation of their papers

in the seminar duly adjudged by the judges invited for the purpose.

(ii) Sri Anil Ota, BJB College – 2nd

(iii) Simple Sujata Mishra, R.D. Women’s College – 3rd.

12. All the participants, volunteers and guests were provided with refreshments after the

seminar.

MINI MARATHON AND WOMEN EXHIBITION FOOT BALL MATCH (20.08.06)

1. A Mini Marathon was organised on the

morning of 20th August 2006 at 7:00 AM at

Bhubaneswar.

2. Prior to the date and time of the marathon,

intimation was given to all the leading

dailies based in Bhubaneswar, as well as All

India Radio, Doordarshan, different Private

TV Channels and other Electronic Media, the

Media Unit of the Ministry of Information &

Broadcasting, Government of India, and the

Regional Field Units of the Directorate of

Field Publicity for wide media coverage of

the event.

3. There were more than 3000 participants in

the marathon.

4. The Directorate of Sports, Schools,

Colleges, leading personalities, senior citizens, youths, Sports Clubs, Police, Doorshan,

Press, Youth Hostels, Sports etc. were associated with the event.

5. T-Shirts and Caps received from the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency ( IREDA)

as per the instructions of MNES , Government of

India , were distributed to each participant of

the event.

6. Hon’ble Minister of State, Science &

Technology(Independence charge) and Panchayati

Raj, Orissa flagged off the marathon race.

7. The length of the marathon was about 10

kilometres, starting from Biju Pattnaik Park

(Forest Park) enroute Sishubhawan Square – Rajmahal Square – Master Canteen Square –

Assembly Square – A. G. Square – Hospital Square and terminated at Biju Pattnaik Park.

8. Subsequently, an Exhibition Women Football

Match was played between Bhubaneswar-

XI and the Sports Hostel at Kalinga Stadium,

Bhubaneswar at 4.00 PM.

9. The Match was inaugurated by the Hon’ble

Minister, Information and Public Relation

and Sports & Youth Services, Orissa.

10. Later all the participants, spectators and volunteers were provided with refreshments.

11. The event was telecast in the Evening Regional News by DD1, ETV & OTV on the same day.

12. The events were also published in all the major dailies and Newspapers.

EXHIBITION (20.08.2006)

1. An exhibition on Renewable Energy was organised by OREDA in the premises of Soochana

Bhawan, Bhubaneswar.

2. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of State, Science & Technology

(Independent charge) and Panchayati Raj, Orissa at 10.00 AM on 20.08.06 in presence of

3. The dealers of Renewable Energy Products as well as the organisations associated with

4. Renewable Energy Programmes like Solar Power Project, Mini-micro Hydel Project, Wind

Power Project and other devices like solar lanterns, street lighting systems, Home lighting

systems, Educational kits and Solar cookers etc. were demonstrated.

5. Intimation was given to all leading dailies based at Bhubaneswar and other electronic

medias for wide media coverage of the exhibition.

6. Advertisement was given to three regional news papers for publication of the proposed

programme.

7. Still photographs were also taken of the exhibition.

8. The exhibition news was also telecast in the regional news of private TV channels as well

as Door Darshan Kendra, Bhubaneswar.

9. The exhibition news was also published in most of the major dailies of the newspapers.

CLOSING CEREMONY [ 20.08.2006]

As a part of the celebration of the Rajiv Gandhi Akshaya Urja Diwas(RGAUD), the main function

and the closing ceremony were organised with the aim to encourage amongst the general

masses, as well as the student community, the acceptability of Renewable Energy Devices in

each household and community in each and every nook and corner of Orissa.

4. The function started at about 7:00 PM, where all the guests were welcomed with flower

bouquets. Subsequently all the guests on the dais lit the lamp under the photograph of

Sri Rajiv Gandhi and offered floral tributes.

5. The main ceremony was started with an opening song by a group of artists of Bhubaneswar.

6. Sri Baishnab Ch. Mohanty, Director, I&PR Department welcomed guests, dignitaries and

others. He gave the Introductory Speech and reiterated about the day being observed as

Rajiv Gandhi Akshaya Urja Diwas by the Government.

7. Sri Prasad Harichandan, Former Minister, Orissa spoke about the contribution in the field

of Science & Technology by Sri Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.

8. Sri Debashish Nayak, Hon’ble Minister, I&PR and Y.S. Department, Orissa spoke about the

activities of his departments conducted as per the request of the Hon’ble Minister, Science

& Technology, Orissa-cum-Chairman, OREDA.

9. Sri Jagar Singh, IAS Commissioner-cum-Secretary to Govt., Science & Technology

Department, Orissa spoke about the need of alternate use of conventional energy for the

coming days in the country.

10. Sri Digambar Mohanty, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary to Govt., I &PR Department, Orissa,

spoke about the Renewable Energy Resources and Energy Saving Devices available in Orissa.

11. Sri Bibhas Kumar Panda, Principal Scientific Officer-cum-Head, Eastern Region, MNES

Bhubaneswar spoke about the activities undertaken by the Ministry in the State for

popularisation and propagation of renewable energy.

12. Sri Sanjeeb Kumar Sahu, Hon’ble Minister, Science & Technology, Orissa-cum-Chairman,

OREDA highlighted the need of usage of alternative sources of energy due to the energy

crises, being faced by the public and also to make the dream of Sri Rajiv Gandhi fruitful.

Further, he elaborated on the actions being taken to suitably combat the rising crises.

13. The meeting was conducted for about 2 hours. After the meeting, prizes were distributed

by the Chief Guest and other guests on the dais to the winners in various competitions.

14. As decided by State Govt. in Science & Technology Department, Orissa, two Scientists

namely Dr. S.K. Khuntia, Regional Research

Laboratory, Bhubaneswar and Sri Ashok

Kumar Chaudhury, Orissa Renewable Energy

Development Agency, Bhubaneswar were

felicitated by the Chief Guest with flower

bouquets, shawls, certificates and

momento for their outstanding contribution in

the field of Renewable Energy.

15. Sri R.N. Patra, Joint Director, OREDA gave

vote of thanks to the Hon’ble Ministers, visitors,

audience, organisers and the media units for

making the function a grand success.

16. After the vote of Thanks, several Cultural Groups performed “Bhajan Samaroh” for the

appropriate culmination of the event. The function came to a close at about 10.45 PM.

17. The function was also a part of the Regional News item telecast by Door Darshan,

ETV(Oriya), OTV etc.

22. The video coverage along with photographs were also taken to capture the function in all

its variety and pomp.

ORGANISATION OF WORKSHOP

As decided in the preparatory meeting held for the purpose under the able chairmanship of the

Hon’ble Minister of Science & Technology Department, Orissa, a one-day workshop on “Biofuel” will

be held in the second week of November, 2006 as a part of the celebration of RGAUD – 2006.
