The liturgical seasons — Ordinary Time, Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas — help us to prepare for the glories of certain feasts. They also remind us of a greater
reality: the fact that one day our season on earth shall pass.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In an on-demand society, it's not always easy to imagine life with less.
The crowds of Jesus' day depended on the weather and successful growing seasons for their livelihood. For many of Jesus' listeners, even
"food that perished" would have been a welcome relief. Jesus acknowledges this but tries to draw them deeper. "You are
looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled." For people who have just witnessed a miracle,
the response is strangely marked by ingratitude. "What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert." Jesus fed them for one day, but Moses interceded with God for 40 years of bread. "Jesus," they seem
to say, "can't you just give us more?" How often do we behave similarly in the spiritual life? "If I only I had more patience, then I could be kind to her." "I could be welcoming if I
was more outgoing, but that's just not me." "I know I'd be a better parent if I just had more time." Like the crowds, we want Jesus to give us more. We don’t always want him to completely shift our paradigm.
Perhaps it's not "more patience" we need, but a deeper sense of our own imperfections for a greater sense of empathy. Maybe God is
inviting you not to entertain an entire group, but to seek out the quiet person on the fringe. And time may limit you from family
engagement, but could God be asking you to reorder your priorities entirely? After all, it wasn't more loaves that the people needed. Jesus
is "the bread of life," who sustains our most essential needs. This week, are you looking for more or are you looking for God Himself?

PREDICTABILITY
“Every year, August lashes out in volcanic fury, rising with the din of morning traffic, its great metallic wings smashing against the ground, heating the air with ever-increasing intensity.” ~ Henry Rollins
One thing is certain, no one around here will be singing Frank Loesser’s song, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” anytime in the near future. We all know what August means: heat, the beginning of school, heat, the end of summer vacations, heat, the shifting of seasons and, did I mention, heat. That is certain. It is predictable. There seems to be no getting around it. So, we find ourselves preparing for it.
When August comes around, parents begin the back-to-school purchasing for clothes and supplies. Families take last-minute vacations. Students rush to finish their summer packets given to them before school let out for the summer. There is so much to do to prepare for what is to come.
It is that way in our faith lives as well. There are predictable seasons that speak to us about preparation. The liturgical seasons — Ordinary Time, Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas — help us to prepare for the glories of certain feasts. They also remind us of a greater reality: the fact that one day our season on earth shall pass.
Jesus constantly reminded His people to live in readiness. They were to be prepared for His coming, which He described as a thief in the night. That frightens some people, usually because they do not live their lives as they should. If we lived our lives in readiness, we would have no reason to worry or fear.
But, let’s face it, there are so many distractions in this world that we often take our eyes off of the prize of eternity and, instead, gaze at the “prizes” offered to us by the world. We become so enamored by the things of this world that we forget to prepare for eternity. It is very much like the student who goes home for the summer and does not open the summer packet until two days before school. Major panic sets in as that student scrambles to get things done.
We could wait and live in panic, fear, dread, and anxiety or we could do something each day to prepare for the day that God calls us home. Personally, I do not like panic and anxiety. I would rather be ready. It’s easier to do than one might think. Pray each day. Try to do good for others. Look for signs of God all around you and respond to those signs with thankful praise.
FAITH ACTION: Ask yourself if you are ready for the Lord’s call. If not, determine what you need to do and then get busy doing it.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS This coming Saturday, August 11th, the Knights of Columbus will have a Corporate Communion at the
5:30 p.m. Mass. Immediately following the Mass, they will have the Installation of Officers for the new Fraternal Year. If you would like to attend the installation, you are more
than welcome. This would be a good time to meet the officers of the Council and to ask any questions you may
have about membership.
PREPARING FOR A NEW SCHOOL YEAR To all those preparing to move to college, God bless you. Please do not forget to make time to pray and go to Mass.
You can get incredible strength from that. To those preparing to return to grade school or high
school, come with an open mind and willing spirit. To those preparing to teach once again, I hope the respite
of summer vacation has renewed you in body and spirit.
