Scripture: John 3: 1-12

There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a Jewish leader. He came to Jesus at night andsaid to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no onecould do these miraculous signs that you do unless God is with him.”

Jesus answered, “I assure you, unless someone is born anew, it’s not possible to see God’skingdom.”

Nicodemus asked, “How is it possible for an adult to be born? It’s impossible to enter themother’s womb for a second time and be born, isn’t it?”

Jesus answered, “I assure you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, it’s notpossible to enter God’s kingdom. Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever isborn of the Spirit is spirit. Don’t be surprised that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’God’s Spirit blows wherever it wishes. You hear its sound, but you don’t know where itcomes from or where it is going. It’s the same with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus said, “How are these things possible?”

“Jesus answered, “You are a teacher of Israel and you don’t know these things? I assureyou that we speak about what we know and testify about what we have seen, but you don’treceive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you don’t believe, how willyou believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

About Today’s Anthem"This week we will hear “Stand Up” from the 2019 movie “Harriet,” the story of Harriet Tubman. The anthem was co-written by Cynthia Onyedinmanasa Chinasaokwa Erivo and Joshuah BrianCampbell. Erivo, born in England (1987) of Nigerian parents, is an actor, singer and songwriterknown for her Tony and Grammy wining portrayal as Celie in the 2015-17 revival of “The ColorPurple.” Campbell (Harvard ’16 and currently an NYU seminarian) was sought by the “Harriet”producers after a performance at the 2018 Harvard commencement of his anthem “SingOut/March On,” which he wrote and sang for honorary degree recipient John Lewis. “Stand Up”was written after the movie was completed, and is sung over the credits. While many of theactors sing throughout the film (their singing was one way they surreptitiously conveyedmessages to each other) when Erivo sings “Stand Up,” she does so in her own voice, and notTubman’s. For Erivo, the song is a “thank you to Harriet—an expression of hope, strength andinspiration to do good for one another.” Campbell connected strongly to Tubman’s faith, and thesong is also honest to his roots in gospel and southern traditional Black music.
