The Service of the Word

THE SCRIPTURE READING James 1:17-27 Rob Hansen

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act - they will be blessed in their doing.

If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. -NRSV

Jones holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas-Austin, a Master of Divinity magna cum laude from the Duke University Divinity School, and a Bachelor of Arts with honors from Hendrix College. Prior to joining Ohio Wesleyan, he worked for Hendrix, serving in roles that included Executive Vice President and Dean of Advancement, Vice President for Enrollment and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid, interim Vice President for Student Affairs, and Chaplain.

In recognition of his work to advance the quality of student life at Ohio Wesleyan, Jones received the 2014 “Outstanding Performance as a College or University President Award” from Region IV-East of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.

ROB HANSEN SCRIPTURE/PRAYER Rob is a retired educator who substitutes virtually every school day. His early connection to Ocean Park was as a Connecticut preteen, when the family would drive his mother here to be the director of the New England Baptist Youth Conference’s Camp Hasseltine. As a teenager, Rob attended Camp Judson. Following four years in the Air Force, he moved to Maine and married Lorna, a former NEBYC camper and counselor, and they rekindled their families’ OPA tradition. Rob is an OPA member who has sung in the Temple Choir many summers and served on three Association committees, currently on the Religious and Cultural Committee.

The Hansens have three sons, two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren, all of whom annually vacation in The Park.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mission Statement: The purpose of the Ocean Park Association is to affirm the traditions and spiritual
heritage of which we are heirs, through a summer assembly program where Christian worship, principles and ideals are at the focus; where diversity is celebrated and the dignity of all is embraced and respected; where
the natural beauty of our seaside resort is conserved and enhanced; and where programs centered on religion, education, recreation and culture provide opportunities for individual growth and family enrichment.
Temple History: The Temple was built by Free Will Baptists during a six-week period in the summer of 1881; it was dedicated on August 2nd of that year, which was also the first day of the Assembly Program in Ocean
Park. The octagonal structure represents an architectural style popular at the time. It seats up to 750 people, and is the site of most cultural events.
The Temple is open weekday mornings for meditation and observation.
