Rate it? or Hate it?Dear YCL,

I LOVE living in York and I really enjoyed your ‘Rate It or Hate It’

section last month – it was nice to know that there are other people

with the same gripes and likes as myself. Anyway, it compelled me

to write in with my own: RACE TRAFFIC. It’s sooooooo annoying!

Having enjoyed a good few days at the races myself, I’m aware that

it’s completely hypocritical of me to say this – but, god, it gets on my

nerves! Surely there is an easier way to do it where we, on a regu-

lar basis, don’t all have to suffer the horrendous traffic? No? Any-

way, I know it’s a small price to pay for all the money it brings to the

city but, ignoring that, I can still honestly say that I totally…..

Hate itJenny, South Bank.

YCL says: Hmmm, we see your point. The traffic can be tricky - but then a day at the Races can

be SUPERB.

Hello everyone at YCL!

I really just want to say a big THANK YOU to York Council for the

amazing range of services they offer for younger kids. I’m especially a

big fan of ‘The Toy Bus’ (the mobile toy library), where you can borrow

good quality toys, books and equipment. My little one, Gemma, LOVES

getting to have a go on all the different toys and finds the whole

process incredibly exciting. I also think that it’s a really great opportu-

nity for youngsters to meet, play and interact with other kids who they

wouldn’t normally – and for parents to meet other parents. My only slight concern is whether there

are the same great public services available for older kids but, as with most things, I imagine I will

cross that bridge when I come to it (you may even receive another letter from me) For now, I just

wanted to say, I totally….

Rate itElizabeth, Acomb.

YCL says: The Toy Bus? Totally amazing, we agree! What do you all think about Elizabeth’s sec-

ond point – is there enough to do for the younger teens?

Hey YCL

Why, why, why do we have to get so many bloomin leaflets

through our door every day? I get that the odd one can be helpful

– I have on occasion ended up using one (usually a take away

menu) but sometimes I’m swimming in the things! And another

thing, what’s with all the charity bags?! I’m all for doing charitable

things, but if I we’re to fill every one of those I’d have nothing left!

Hate itMick, Woodthorpe. YCL says: Mick, perhaps you could consider using the bags for…

I dunno.. the leaflets? Two birds, one stone ;)

If there is anything about York that YOU would like to rate (or hate)

then let us know! Contact us on [email protected]

Lal Quila(aka ‘Red Fort to the World’)We wanted to do a little piece on one of our fave

Indian eateries in York

Much like the Lal Quila in Delhi, this Indian

restaurant on Bishopthorpe Road has stood the

test of time- it was in fact one of York’s first. Their

food is what used to be traditionally served in the

Mughal households and Royal Palaces of old

India. Subsequently many different cultures,

races and religions have contributed in shaping

what is now known as Indian food in the UK. The

menu at Lal Quila is a fusion of the traditional and

modern dishes. The menu has kept pace with the

ever so discerning British clientele whom have

travelled to India and tasted the authentic delights

for themselves. Lal Quila strives to attain this and

also include dishes from other parts of India.

The staff are friendly and welcoming, the food is

so yummy and the service is consistently

attentive. Plus they deliver for free – ideal for

when you can’t be bothered to move from the

sofa! We love this place!!

Mill Farm Tea RoomsHere at YCL we kept hearing lots of lovelythings from our friends about ‘Mill Farm TeaGardens’ in South Milford. Words like“scrummy”, and “yummy” – two expressionswe like a lot! So, we thought we‘d better goand investigate for ourselves! First off, it’s important you know that we are bigfans of a good ‘high tea’ – of which they do amarvellous job, including all the trimmings! Theyalso do a rather tasty hot lunch if that’s more toyour liking! Not to mention their cakes, sconesand cookies. Oh my goodness ... One word...heaven!You can sit in their quaint parlour tea room orhead out to soak up the tranquil country gardensurroundings – either way; you will just love theatmosphere of this place! The food and service isexcellent, they do an outstanding job! And, havingeyes bigger than my tummy, the inevitable doggy-bag option was a winner so that I could buy moreyummy cakes and pastries to take home andshare. Well, I might share. What’s that we hear you say– York? Festival?...Food?Count us in!

Every late September, since 1997, the York FoodFestival has dominated the city centre for a full10 days. This year - from the 17th to the 27th -it’s back and it promises to be bigger than ever! Now, we’ve all seen it happening – but have youever actually got involved? To me it alwaysseemed like ‘one for the tourists’, but actually itsprimary purpose is to promote Yorkshire’s greatfood and drink, and there are LOADS of fun

things to do!

The theme for thisyear’s event is‘Meet theYorkshire FoodHeroes’, includingfarmers, cheesemakers, brewersand wine makers. Many of these“Heroes”, likefisherman, butchers, growers andproducers ofspecialist drinks

(sloe gin, elderflower cordial and the like),appear alongside regional Michelin Star chefs inspecial events like “Yorkshire Food Heroes”, atthe Guildhall. This year, they are putting on ahuge selection of street entertainers andcommunity events, and will be open later for anyof us that can’t make it during working hours!

There are too many events and activities tomention them all,but the websiteaddress is belowjust in case youfancy looking upsome more details, and we can giveyou a couple of ourown personalhighlights! Thereare obviously thefood and drinkmarkets onParliament Street, where this yearthey will becovering thefountain with a marquee and turning it in to ‘TheFountain Café, there will be a ‘’Yorkshire BeerTent’, a ‘Fish Workshop’ and they will also behosting some ‘Historic Dinners’, which will

include some Georgian and Victorian courses. For those of you with a sweet tooth, you can paya visit to ‘The Ice Cream Feast’, atMiddlethorpe Hall (whereyou can haveafternoon teaalong withsome tasty butbizarre icecream flavours, like parmesancheese). TheGuildhall willplay host to oneof the mostpopular events,‘The GhurkhaCurry’, where TheQueen's 2ndGhurkha Signalregiment fromNepal, stationed at

Imphal Barracks,York, serve Festival goers with fabulousauthentic Nepalese Gurkha curries and an Ice-Cream dessert. There will also be a selection ofevents for all of you chocolate lovers, where youcan go along to see how it’s made and have ataste for yourself (or several, if you’re like me).The Chocolate events, in particular, we think aregoing to be fantastic – they will be full of recipesfor you to try and a series around the legendarynovel ‘Chocolat’, the author herself will bepaying a visit to see the ‘ChocolateDemonstrations.’

The event is definitely worth checking out;whether you’re on a hot date, taking the family,or going with friends! The market stalls are filledwith sumptuous delights and irresistible treats, and there is a real sense of fun and communityspirit among the people that attend. So, if you’re planning a big shop, or even if youjust fancy a quick snack – avoid the chainsupermarkets and go along to meet and supportour Yorkshire Food Heroes!

I’m getting hungry just thinking about it….

Every month here at YCL, we want to show some love for the charities that work hard to make ourcommunity a better, happier place to live.

This month is the turn of ‘Mind’ - a charity which is very close to our heart and one that works tirelesslyto support the many people here in York who experience mental health problems. We reckon thatthe work they do is very important! Here’s why:

First off, mental illness is never just “somebody else’s problem”. In fact, one in four of us will ex-perience a mental health problem at some point in our lives; be it ourselves, a family memberor a friend, the likleyhood is that many of you reading this will have been exposed to a mental healthissue at some point or other. It can affect anyone - regardless of age, gender or income- and canshatter the lives of both the sufferer, and the people closest to them. Each year more than 250,000people are admitted to psychiatric hospitals and over 4,000 people take their own lives. It just doesn’tseem right does it?

Scarily, research suggests that ninety per cent of people who experience mental health difficulty willfind it hard, if not impossible, to live their lives as active members of society. Instead, they are oftensocially excluded and unable to properly access fair opportunities for employment, income, housing, and social and health care. Furthermore, you can feel a sense of severe social isolation, along witha lack of any friendships or support, making it even harder to recover.

It all paints a pretty bleak picture, right?

But York and District Mind is a charity that responds to the needs of people suffering from mentalhealth issues in York by providing a quality service to local people, no matter what degree of problemsthey are experiencing.

Their main focus revolves around eradicating social exclusion, discrimination and impoverishmenton the basis of mental health, as well as providing support for people in mental and emotional dis-tress. They offer a range of services and support groups (listed below) to mental health sufferersand their loved ones which are completely free. Pretty invaluable, if you ask us!

So, if you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, you can get help from any ofthe following places:

THIS is your monthly YCL glance in to the world of finance. In eachissue, with the help of our expert financial boffins, we will be taking alook at some qualified views on all things money, making sure that youhave all the facts that you need! So, how are things looking in thefinancial world and what should individuals be focusing on? We askedPeter Clifton of P J Clifton Financial Services, and he comments:

For some people the idea of retirement is filled with utter joy about theprospect of no longer having to work! For others, it can be a little scary.

Either way it is something that we all, at some point, have to consider - because when the timecomes you want to make sure that you are ready for it.

The characteristics and needs of the population coming into retirement are constantly evolving. Most people work hard during their years of employment, and understandably want to make themost of the growing number of active years that they can expect to enjoy in retirement.

Increasingly people have to supplement savings that they have made into pension schemes toachieve a comfortable lifestyle, and for homeowners over the age of 55, this is where EquityRelease products can be so useful. These schemes may enable you to improve your home, cleardebts, supplement your income, treat yourself to a much needed holiday, buy a car, or simply helpyour children through a difficult time.

Most people access Equity Release products through firms that advertise nationally, but decidingwhether Equity Release is right for you can be a difficult decision: you may want several meetingswith your adviser, and may even want to get your family involved in the decision making process.

This is where Local and Independent advice can be so useful. Not all schemes available are ofequal merit and here at PJ Clifton Financial Services, we are able to offer Independent advice onEquity Release, as well as a broad range of other services, including pension planning, mortgage, and investment advice. An initial consultation is always free. For more information on this or forany other financial advice and guidance then please contact us, using the details below!

Personal debt – do you know your options?

As part of your monthly overview on all things money, we are hugely excited to present you with aregular column from our local legal experts, Langleys! As one of the country’s leading practices,Langleys have generations of experience acting as solicitors in the York area and, each month, theywill have their own section RIGHT HERE in your local copy of YCL. This month, the focus is debt!Let’s hear what they have to say:

Debt - It’s not something that anybody enjoys having. But did you know that are a number of optionsavailable to you depending on the amount you owe and the number of creditors you have? Let’shave a brief look at some:

An Informal Arrangement: If you have a small number of creditors pressurising you for payment wewould suggest that you speak to your creditors individually, explain your current financial difficultiesand attempt to agree with them some form of payment plan i.e. weekly/monthly set payments. Thereis no way of forcing a creditor to accept a proposal even if the majority of creditors are prepared toaccept your proposal.

A Debt Relief Order (“DRO”): DROs are run by The Insolvency Service in partnership with skilleddebt advisers and provide debt relief for 12 months at a cost of £90. A DRO is only appropriate ifyou have no assets, little or no surplus income and your cumulative debts total no more than£15,000. At the end of the DRO, if your financial circumstances have not changed, you will be freedfrom all the debts listed in the DRO.

Individual Voluntary Arrangements: An IVA is a formal arrangement with your creditors whereby youmake a proposal to pay part or all of your debts. Any IVA proposal needs to be approved by 75%by value of your creditors in order for the IVA to be binding on all your creditors. An IVA proposalwill need to be professionally drafted and filed at court for finalising. You will need to nominate aninsolvency practitioner to act as your supervisor.

Bankruptcy: Bankruptcy is an option if you cannot pay your debts and you wish to make a freshstart. Bankrupts are usually discharged from being bankrupt 12 months after the bankruptcy orderis made, however this will depend on whether or not you cooperate with your Trustee in Bankruptcy, who can seek an order from the Courts requesting that your discharge be delayed. Any assets youhad when you were declared bankrupt however remain with your trustee. If you had significantassets such as equity in a house this is unlikely to be the best option for you. There are a number of restrictions placed on you if you are declared bankrupt. A bankruptcy orderwill affect your credit rating even after discharge, as a record of your bankruptcy will be kept on yourcredit file by commercial credit reference agencies for the next five to six years.

Here at Langleys we appreciate that debt can be a stressful issue so please feel free to phone amember of the Insolvency team at Langleys to discuss the options available to you.

“Stop moaning! If she wants to be an

Air Hostess it’s up to us to support her!”

Fancy submitting your own caption for this cartoon? Send it in to [email protected]

One for our younger readers and/or their parents:‘Children’s Book Week’ starts on the 4th October! Now, it goes without saying that we all try to get our youngsters

reading as much as we can! Sometimes this can prove harder than

it should – what with the latest ‘X-Driver 3000 mega-box like, totally

awesome super-station’ or whatever computer consoles that is the

‘must have’ item at the moment! Fortunately, children’s literature

has never been so cool, and some of the praise for this must go to

one JK Rowling, God bless her! What with her engaging characters

and page-turning plots…I think we’ve all had our nose in a Harry

Potter book at some point.

For those youngsters that seem to find it that bit harder to pick up

a book than others, on the 4th October the push for children to build

their passion for reading begins – and it is something we here at

YCL HQ totally support! Apart from books being educational and

entertaining the benefits of being a young reader are vast. It has

been found that avid young readers can read, write & concentrate

better, process new information easier, have more interests and

tend to achieve in a wider variety of subjects.

Further to this, they become more flexible thinkers and more open to new ideas, dealing with

personal problems better and without their schoolwork being affected Reading is not only an

entertainment medium but a life skill, and it’s one of the best gifts you could give any child or adult.

So let’s support ‘Children’s Book Week’ and tell our kids to go get lost… in a good book!

David Sykes: Update. Last month we ran a piece on the brilliant David

Sykes – a man out to break records, as he

attempts the world’s first solo flight from York

to Sydney by a paraplegic person.

Unfortunately he has had to postpone his solo

flight attempt due to a lack of sponsorship.

David’s brave mission is all in the name of

charity, supporting the ‘Spinal Injuries

Association’ and the ‘Yorkshire Air Ambulance’.

So let’s all continue to get behind him and, with

luck, a new date can be announced.
