We have supported this cause in the past, but it seemed much more special this year. One of our loyal amazing casual teachers (for 8 years) Mrs Jacqui Plater, decided to “shave for a cure”. Mrs Plater has had leukaemia too close to home, with her sister diagnosed a few years ago, and more recently her 5 year old nephew, who has had to delay starting kindergarten whilst undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Mrs Plater, decided that this was her time to “SHAVE” for an awesome cause. She chose to share this experience with students at Banora Point High School by cutting it all off on assembly last Wednesday. All students and staff were emotionally involved with this wonderful thing that Mrs Plater was doing. She has managed to raise a total of $4411 for the leukaemia foundation, and I thank the entire community of Banora Point High School for their support.

REACH FOR THE STARS

Banora Point High School is always known for its community support and this week we had the opportunity as a school to support a won-derful cause. Mrs Plater, decided that this was her time to

“SHAVE” for an awesome cause.

Thank you to Lee-Anne Rice (who also did shave for a cure herself 2 years ago) for coming in, giving up her time, and helping Mrs Plater reach her target. Congratulations to Tom Durey and Brayden Lee both in Year 11, who also “shaved for a cure”

From the Principal Mr Greg Smith

A number of successful activities have occurred re-cently. On Thursday 14th March twenty five gifted and talented year 6 students started a project in-volving healthy lifestyles. The project involved learn-ing about the circulatory system, the factors that impact on health and the effects of hypertension. We had a number of staff presenting on the day, including Mr Mark MacKenzie, Mr Joshua Edwards, Mr Stephen Wemm, and Mr Luke Bristow. Our school would like to thank Dr Joe Ogg for giving his time to contribute to the education of these enthusi-astic young people. He held the students and staff engaged fully throughout his sessions and it was a very positive day all round. The Annual General Meeting of the P&C was held last week and the following members of our school community now form the 2013 P&C Executive:

Mr Peter Kulmer – President Mr Paul Knight – Vice President Ms Lisa Naumovski – Secretary Ms Stacey Bech – Treasurer

There was a good attendance on the evening and I thank these members for accepting the nomina-tions. I would like to thank the 2012 P&C executive and members for the many contributions that they have made to our school. Congratulations to the newly elected team. Our Healthy Schools Project continues to develop. The governance committee met last week to contin-ue planning the implementation stage of the pro-gram. The scope of involvement with the three uni-versities is being developed along with protocols for the student placements when they occur. At this stage we are expecting the trial placements to occur in term 3. They may involve both main stream and support class activities. The areas that the students are coming from include:

Exercise physiology Physiotherapy Speech pathology Occupation Therapy Nursing Nutrition

Students will be surveyed this week using a ques-tionnaire that was developed by the P&C and has

been run past our SRC team. We hope to get stu-dent opinions about various aspects of the uniform so that decisions can be made regarding whether any changes are needed. Banora Point High School commences the Premier’s Sports Leadership workshops this week. This is led by Mr Nathan Williams and involves both students from our school and our partner Primary Schools. This is an exciting initiative which should develop student leadership across the Aurora Learning Com-munity. Year 12 are reminded of upcoming exams in weeks 10 and 11. Staff have been completing returns re-garding the performance of students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Letters will be sent out soon for stu-dents who have been working well and programs of improvement put in place for students who are ex-periencing difficulties. I take this opportunity to thank Mr Bristow for his contributions to this new process. Mr Lengeyl (Year 12 Advisor) organised a study skills program for Year 12 last week to help prepare them for their Half Yearly Assessments. I believe that it was a very effective program and cer-tainly targeted key skills at a very important time of the year. Our new Roll Marking system is being utilised well and we will begin SMS messaging this week. If you believe that an error has occurred, please contact the school. The messages regarding unexplained absences will go out around 10.30am each day. If you have changed your mobile number, please in-form the school as soon as possible. Parents need to be aware that there are charges for reply texts. Sustain Transport aims to enhance transport op-tions in the Northern Rivers . This team of very dedi-cated people are surveying the population from the Clarence to the Tweed around their transport needs. If you would like to participate in the survey please use the link below: https://scuau.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0J1GIHqqaBOcalD

It has been another busy couple of weeks in the careers department with senior students attending many experience days, particularly at Bond University and many students seeking enrolment to more new programs on offer. Thank you to those students who responded to the recruit drive offered by Bunnings South Tweed for prospective employment. It looks like those respondents will earn part-time em-ployment from this opportunity. I do stress the importance of keeping up to date with our school newsletters as it is a key communication tool in gaining access to fabu-lous opportunities for your children. If you are unsure of anything promoted by Banora Point High Careers Department, please give me a call o r send me an emai l j e s s i ca [email protected] I am more than happy to help. TITANS 4 TOMORROW GIRLS ACADEMY – WORKSHOP 1

Last Thurs-day 7th March most of our female indigenous students from Years 7-12 attended Workshop 1 of the Titans 4 Tomorrow

Girls Academy at Tweed River High School. Thank you to the Titans who provided transport and to the wonderful Miss Arthurson and Miss Spencer for accompanying our girls. Preston Campbell and Clinton Toopi helped

the girls create their personalised learning goals, and pressed the importance of high self-confidence and self-esteem as they continue to excel academically in a classroom environment. The 2nd Workshop will be held at Banora Point High School on Tuesday 26th March. We look forward to hosting the Tweed River High School students and enhancing our cultural bond between the 2 schools, the girls and com-munity. I thank Cathy and Narelle from the Ti-tans team for their support of Banora Point High School. The Titans really are more than just a football club. Congratulations to Miss Spencer, who has successfully been appointed as our schools contact for 2 days a week for our girls in the program. Miss Spencer will con-tinue to do an amazing job as the Junior Norta Norta Tutor for our Junior Indigenous students as well as this role in the girl’s academy. Bano-ra Point High School is very lucky to have her on board 5 days a week.

BOND UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE DAYS On Friday 8th February, 5 year 12 students were privileged to attend the Advertising and Personal Relations Day; On Monday 11th March 3 year 12 students attended the Interac-tive Media Day; On Wednesday 13th March 3 year 12 students attended the Diplomat for a Day workshop, all at Bond University. All of these students have reported back how awe-some these days have been in determining their future career paths and decisions. Thank you to Tom Betts at Bond University who has assisted our students in these opportunities. LEGAL STUDIES DAY Last Thursday 28th March, Mrs Clurey, who is our amazing HSIE teacher, and our senior Legal Studies, took the Year 12 Legal Studies class to Bond University for the free Law Court Discov-ery Day. Students had the opportunity to get an overview of the Australian Legal System and Courtroom Protocols, with a Campus tour

of the Law Faculty and to be involved in a criminal mock trial, with prosecution, defence, witnesses (of which some of our students were involved) and an overall verdict. Mrs Clurey is also involved with the Mooting Competition, and we wish her and her team all the best in the next month as they prepare. I am honoured to report that the Law Faculty staff at Bond, commented on how well man-nered, well dressed and how professional our school was on the Court Discovery Day, some-thing of which we take pride in at Banora Point High School. DEFENCE FORCE PRESENTATION Last Tuesday 12th March, students were able to attend a very informative session from Rus-sell (Army) and Dallas (Navy) from the recruit-ment office of the Defence Forces. Students learned about the different career paths that they can engage in to be able to enter the De-fence Force as either an Officer or through General Entry, Reserves or Cadets. The Defence Force certainly has many incentives for stu-dents to want employment. It was a very worthwhile session, and I thank Terry from De-fence Force Recruiting Coolangatta who helped to make this happen.

Chloe Hennsler-Collison is in Year 11.

She is studying Food Technolo-gy, English Standard, In-dustrial Tech-nology (Wood), Math-ematics Gen-eral, & Textiles.

She is also one of my amazing School-Based Trainees.

Chloe is going to complete her HSC with a Cert II in Financial Services (banking) as well as her HSC credentials. Chloe attends TAFE 1 day per week and works 1 day per week at ANZ bank as part of her traineeship. She works hard to achieve her best and will most certainly achieve her career goals. Well done Chloe!

Monika Bry-an is in Year 11 She is studying Chemistry, Com-munity & Family Studies, English Standard, Math-ematics General, Food Technology and TVET Phar-macy. Monika is one of our more quiet

achievers and is heavily involved in both the AIME and Titans Academy initiatives. Monika received a TAS award last week for outstand-ing personal achievement. She is a mature role model for our younger students, and one student we are very proud of.

Walking past the Technology & Applied Sci-e n c e ( T A S ) rooms this week, I spotted Mrs Naughton and her wonderful Year 11 tex-tiles class. They are cur-rently studying the topic of ‘Design’ and were busy com-pleting their first project. They were designing, pinning, sewing, cutting, and ironing materials

of all types when I came to visit. Textiles & De-sign covers a wide range of topics in designing and creating from simple to complex. Students will be making practical household items from furnishings to clothing to pencil cases. It’s another great subject offered at Banora Point High School.

Tweed Valley Relay For Life Have you been looking for a way to get out in the local area and show your support for com-munity events? Or trying

to find a way to lift moral and build team spir-it?

Relay For Life events have been connecting individuals to communities in their figh against cancer and raising much needed funds for cancer research and support. Participants have been walking or running to inspire HOPE and prove that no-one is alone in the fight against cancer. Have you been looking for a way to get out in the local area and show your support for community events? Or trying to find a way to lift moral and build team spirit?

WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?

Relay For Life is an event, where teams take turns to walk, jog or run around a track to raise money for Cancer Council NSW’s vital research, prevention and support services. The aim is to have one member on the track at all times during the event.

With entertainment, activities and moving ceremonies through the day, it’s a great chance to come to-gether to fight cancer.

Your local event is the Tweed Valley Relay For Life held on Saturday March 23rd & Sunday March 24th at the Cudgen Leagues Club oval in Kingscliff.

GETTING INVOLVED IS EASY!

Register your team and create your online event page. A team can be 2 - 20 people made up of work-mates, friends or family. Raise funds by asking people to sponsor you. We’ll send promotional posters, fundraising tips and raffle books to help you spread the word and get everyone excited. Choose your chal-lenge and work out how you want to Relay: Try to have someone from the team on the track at all times. If you think 18 hours is too much, why not do the 12 or 6 hour challenge?

Decide on a fundraising target and go and exceed it! Make a real difference to the lives of those affected by cancer. Work out how much your team wants to raise and tell everyone you know to sponsor you. Every bit counts!

EVENT BENEFITS:

You are contributing to the fight against cancer! You generate interest and goodwill within the local community.

Relay For Life is a great team building exercise for family, friends, work colleagues, sport clubs, schools and community groups!
