Gordon McKinlay: Jan 5, 1938 – Nov 8, 2010

Gordon taught safer horsemanship that was simplified for both human and horses to understand. His programme was a step

by step process that focused on controlling the horse’s five body parts –the head, neck, shoulders, ribcage and hindquarters –

to make the horse soft, supple and safe. Gordon mentored many of our talented Australian Riders and Trainers who have

gone on to success here and abroad.

Gordon and his wife Enid were instrumental in establishing the renowned Rocky Rush Stockman’s Challenge as one of

Australia’s premiere Stockman’s Challenge events.

The Encouragement award in the Rookies Challenge is our tribute to a legendary horseman. One of his favourite quotes:

“Every horseman is a rider, but not every rider is a horseman”, is the foundation on which this award is based. This award is

not focussed on winning the blue ribbon but for riders who display the attributes of horsemanship. These attributes set

Gordon apart as a true horseman. They include riders who display: honesty, integrity, a proactive attitude, an awareness of

how horses think and behave, an understanding and respect for the horse, a desire to learn more and keep improving.

The 2021 Gordon McKinlay Encouragement Award donated by the Lawrence Family.

“KING OF THE ROUND PEN”

Gordon McKinlay touched more than 12 000 lives and indirectly influenced millions of horsemen. Though he was born into a working family from the bush, Gordon became a household name to Australian horsemen for his ability to break colts, handle wild horses and re-educate problem horses. His ability to get inside even the rankest horse’s mind and communicate with him was second to none and earned him the title “King of the Roundpen”.
