Following the success of the previous advocacy runs for the Pasig River, Team STI once again unfolded its solid support to the environmental cause as it sends the largest school contingent to the fourth installment of ABS-CBN Foundation’s Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) run on September 30, 2012 in Quezon City. Dubbed 09.30.2012 Run, Ride & Roll for the Pasig River, this year’s race drew around 87,000 registered participants in Metro Manila.

The race kicked off at the Quezon Memorial Circle with more than 11,000 students, faculty members, and staff from STI Campuses in Metro Manila including Alabang, Caloocan, Cubao, Shaw, Fairview, Global City, Las Piñas, Makati, Muñoz-EDSA, Novaliches, Parañaque, Quezon Avenue, Recto, Taft, and first-time runners from Ortigas-Cainta, who all geared up to do their share in caring for the environment.

“We really want to be part of this long-term advocacy and we encourage our students to have an active role in their communities, especially in protecting the environment. Since this year’s run will not just be for the ongoing efforts of rehabilitating the Pasig River but will also include the waterways of Quezon City, San Juan, and Mandaluyong, we want to be there to support them in the best way that we can,” shares Shiela Magano, School Operations Manager of STI Headquarters.

In addition to the 5K and 15K races, the Run for Pasig River got even bigger this year with the new “Ride and Roll” category for bikers and skateboard enthusiasts. Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig is a long term advocacy of ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. which aims to rehabilitate the Pasig River and its tributaries.

A Typical Day:

I always start my day full of positive vibes and energy because I have to exude that aura and confidence while dealing with my colleagues and of course, the customers. Generally, I oversee the restaurant operations from the marketing side of the business down to the goings-on in the kitchen. Based on my experience, you cannot really predict a typical work day scenario because a lot of things can happen. At times, you deal with the customers’ complaints, troubleshoot some kitchen concerns, and other difficulties concerning the restaurant. But no matter how challenging the work is, at the end of the day, I ensure that we achieve our goal and that is to give our customers a superior dining experience.

Most Memorable Experience:

My most memorable work experience happened when I was still a dining crew a year ago. We had a guest couple from Singapore and they always visit the restaurant to dine in during their stay here in the Philippines. As a crew, I see to it that I was giving them the best service I can offer and let them experience the typical Filipino hospitality. What made this so special was when one of the guests wrote a note to our Manager. In the note, the guest was very thankful and even mentioned my name as one of the most amazing staff in the restaurant. It just gave me a different sense of fulfillment and confidence knowing that my performance was recognized and commended.

Leading in a Global Setting

With heartwarming enthusiasm, around 100 1st yr. Information Technology (IT), Computer & Consumer Electronics (CCE), and Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) students from STI Alaminos conducted an outreach program in the home of the Little Sisters of the Poor. This religious institution is located in Bolinao, Pangasinan, where sisters consecrate their selves exclusively in the service of the elderly poor.

Under the National Service Training Program (NSTP) class of Ms. Sahlee Chang, the students were very sincere to help elders by preparing food, providing them with entertainment, and most importantly, treating them like their own grandparents. Jade Abalos, one of the students present shares, “With this kind of activity, we feel that we are one with them. They deserve our respect, love, and care.”

Today the Little Sisters of the Poor serve in 31 countries around the world, including homes in Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Penang, New Zealand, and the Philippines. Here, there are two communities: one in Pasay and another in Bolinao, Pangasinan where the novitiate is located.

He has established himself as an educator and mentor, and now Joel Cruz, a BS Computer Science (BSCS) alumnus of STI College – San Fernando, is

ready to widen his reach as he explores various opportunities presented to him.

His continued quest for excellence and service is anchored on his love for his work and his commitment to his field. He dabbled into the field of marketing and has gained knowledge that he carries to his current post as the Supervisor of Customer Support and previously as the Associate and Intermediate Product Support Specialist for GXS Philippines, Inc.

Armed with determination, perseverance, and hard work, the Men’s Volleyball Team of STI College – Baliuag emerged Champions in the District III College Volleyball Competition of the Bulacan Private Schools Association (BULPRISA).

The winning varsity team, composed of Jesus Grande, Gerald Ignacio, Lew Nicaelle Calderon, Mikko Galves, Rozen Valdomar, Eldric Santos, Aljohn San Gabriel, Christian Carreon, Paulo Cruz, Jeremiah Naboa, and Marvin Agustin, conquered the battle for volleyball supremacy during the BULPRISA championship game held on September 23, 2011 in Bustos, Bulacan under the guidance of their coach, Mr. Roger Bulosan.

BULPRISA, established in 1952, is the official provincial association of more than 300 private schools in Bulacan.

She used to be a part of the team — now, she leads it. Right after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree from STI College – Angeles in 2009, Karen Mesa was hired by United Parcel Service International, Inc. (UPS), an American global package delivery company, as a part-time Key Entry Operator. Because of her great potential, she was promoted to Assistant Team Leader after a month on the job.

Karen’s manager and supervisor had so much confidence in her that they convinced her to apply for a Team Leader position. After a rigorous selection process including an exam and a series of interviews, Karen became the youngest Team Leader in the group.

After a year, Karen was assigned as the Team Lead Coordinator, with a responsibility to manage and consolidate individual and team productivity reports. “My knowledge in basic programming has been very helpful in managing our employees’ daily performance and productivity,” she shares. Today, Karen helps her younger sister pursue her studies at STI College – Angeles.

UPS is the world’s largest global transportation company, operating in more than 200 countries and territories, and employing more than 400,000 professionals around the world.

Growing up in a small town called Moises Padilla in Negros Occidental, Marvin Fernando Seron, or simply Marvs, had to work hard to finish school. His father died when he was 12 years old, and being the eldest of five and the only boy in the family, he had to grow up quickly to reach the dreams he had for himself and his

family. In high school, Marvs sold eggs, peanuts, and candies in the local market to be able to help his family. He was able to study in a private school because he was a scholar.

Having financial struggles until college, Marvs decided to take up a two-year course in Applied Computer Science in STI College– Parañaque. Upon

Journey to Success: From Negros Occidental to Japangraduation, he was able to work as a Data Encoder, but his dreams continued to live on. He realized he will not be able to land a higher-paying job with his current status, so he pursued his BS Computer Science (BSCS) degree still in STI College – Parañaque.

Fast forward seven years, today Marvs is happily working in Tokyo, Japan as the Senior Systems Engineer of a software development company called Think Corporation. The adjustment in a new country and playing a big role in a big company made it difficult for Marvs to adjust. But, as he best explains, “If you really love your field, it gets easier every day, and the most important thing is to be open to learning so you can easily adapt to your environment.”

Students from STI College – Muñoz-EDSA has taken their creative juices, talents, and skills to a whole new level as they held a three-month film festival dubbed as Viva Vocé: Scream Through Your Eyes.

The culminating night on November 25, 2011 served as the much-awaited awards night where winners from the four categories were declared: radio drama, music video, three-minute film, and short film. Six groups took part in the festival namely: Unkabogable Production, Terapeyti Production, Pektos Production, Ultima, Golden Boy Production, and Tullongest Production.

This student digital film festival allowed the talented students of STI College – Muñoz-EDSA to enhance their technical skill in audio-video production and hone their expertise in the multimedia arts. At the same time, students were able to display an impressive amount of discipline and dedication in ensuring high quality output.

After winning the 101 Ways to Cook Bangus competition three times, STI College – Dagupan’s Tourism and Hospitality Management Instructor Melchor Corpuz won another championship crown but this time, in Dagupan’s Best Special Lechon Cook-Off held on April 24, 2012 as a part of the Bangus Festival celebration.

Mr. Corpuz bested 29 other seasoned lechoneros who took part in the competition and became P50,000 richer for winning the top prize. The

Last year, three students from STI College – Dasmariñas participated in an extensive on-the-job training (OJT) program at the famous Grand Hotel in Michigan, USA. Now, three more students bravely took the challenge and spent their OJT at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in California, USA.

3rd yr. BS Hotel and Restaurant Management students Carla Nicole Basilio, Patrick Abila, and Mary Joan Erlano successfully passed the rigorous screening interview with the HR Personnel of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. These hardworking and talented students then spent their exciting summer abroad under the tutelage of world-class experts in this 135-acre animal theme park.

In the Land of Uncle Sam

Students of STI College – Baguio garnered awards in various competitions during the 9th Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism (HRT) Week organized by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio (HRAB). Held simultaneously at the Baguio Country Club and SM City Baguio from September 6-8, 2012, the HRT Week was dubbed “The Largest and Most Credible Culinary Showdown in the North.”

1st yr. Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (BSHRM) students from STI College– Baguio swept a number of awards in different competitions. Ryan Frank Abigania bagged a silver medal in the Flower Bouquet Arrangement competition and a diploma award in the Centerpiece Arrangement competition. On the other hand, Alvin Lorenzo Ceralde’s Bitter-Spicy Walnut Pralines took the bronze medal in the Pralines/Petit Four competition. Also bagging diploma awards were Melvin Tablatin in the Dish

Garden competition and Johann Jeff Lee in the Fruit Flambé competition. Melvin Tablatin also teamed up with fellow 1st yr. BSHRM students Michael Matthew Isaac and Ram Kevin Narvasa in the Table Setting competition where they also finished with a diploma award.

Adding to the list of STI College – Baguio’s awards in the HRT Week are 1st yr. Multimedia Arts (MMA) students Alvin Levey Sanchez (Silver Medalist, Foodscapes Photography) and Alankar Rai (Diploma Awardee, People and Events Photography).

The rankings of the participants in these competitions were based on the scores given by a panel of judges composed of international hoteliers and restaurateurs in the Philippines. Students from 31 schools in Baguio and other neighboring provinces participated in this three-day event. It aimed to serve as a venue for students to apply what they’ve learned in school and to showcase their talents to the residents and visitors of Baguio.

Baguio’s Time to Shine


The best and the brightest students in the region displayed their kitchen prowess in one of the biggest culinary competitions in Tagum City, Davao del Norte as part of the month-long celebration of the Durian Festival from August 17 - September 17, 2012.

After all the trainings, STI Tagum representatives, composed of 1st and 2nd year Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) students, brought home the bacon after winning 3rd runner-up in the overall categories among 21 participating schools.

In the Durian Bread category, Robert Daniles, Arvin Sampelo, and Kimberly Englis were hailed as champions after reinventing the durian fruit as a bread ingredient while Grazyle Asdillo won 1st place in the Durian Pie category.

Meanwhile, placing 2nd in Chef’s Relay were Theresa Bantilan, Ryan Malig, Daebone Palomar, and Louie Pescador while Manilyn Perges and Marathone Lim triumphed 2nd in the Durian Entremet category. On the other hand, Raj Cabulao finished 3rd in the Durian Coffee Blending category.

PCCL is a national collegiate basketball championship tournament in the country endorsed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. It aims to instill and strengthen the values of sportsmanship, solidarity, and discipline among students and participating schools.

As part of their program to promote world class Filipino workers worldwide, the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA) invited all schools and colleges nationwide to participate in their annual TESDA Skills Competition.

The competition has three levels: Provincial, Regional, and National.

Held on December 2011 at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Calamba, three first-year students from STI College – San Pablo fearlessly competed against 25 schools in the three-day TESDA Laguna Provincial Skills Competition.

Representing STI in the following categories were 2-yr. Hospitality and Restaurant Services student Calvin Karl Brosas for Commercial Cooking and 2-yr. Information Technology (IT) students Paul Angelo Lacanilao for Web Programming and Omark Liwanag for IT/Software Applications.

Aspiring chef Calvin placed 3rd in Commercial Cooking, while tech-savvy Paul impressed everyone with his knowledge and skills as he got 1st place in Web Programming. Paul moved on to

the Regional competition where he won 1st place and also qualified for the National level.

Paul attributes his accomplishments to the whole STI community who supported him all throughout the competition. “Whenever I feel the tension getting to me during the competition, I would then be comforted when I recall the words of encouragement from my coach Mr. Joseph Madera, my classmates, teachers, and staff. They were all behind me 100%.”

Sophomore Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) students Aisa Alcoba, Edward Caccam, and Yves Bengil finished 1st runner-up in the Commercial Cooking NC II competition with their coach, Carolyn Dacanay. Meanwhile, placing 2nd runner-up for the Food and Beverage Servicing NC II competition are 2nd yr. HRS students Jimmy Paguel, Christian Vergara, and Andree Gaspar with their coach, Alyan Ramirez. Lastly, 2nd yr. BS Computer Science student Paul Sarapao placed 2nd runner-up in the Computer Programming NC IV competition under the guidance of coach Jay-r Estrada.

After graduating from the Associate in Computer Technology program in 2004, Jayson Bautista of STI College – Alabang never stopped dreaming of pursuing a bachelor’s

degree. However, his dream was held off for a while because he immediately began working as a Programmer and System Analyst for the MIS Department of the City Government of Muntinlupa.

Jayson’s stint in the City Government of Muntinlupa started out when he was hired as an on-the-job trainee for the Business Permit and Licensing Office, and due to his outstanding performance, he was absorbed by the City Government.

In 2009, Jayson reaped the fruits of his success when he was promoted to Senior Programmer. He is tasked to develop and deploy system processes within various government offices in Muntinlupa. With his dream still intact, Jayson pursued his studies while working and graduated in 2011 with a degree in BS Computer Science. His hard work and perseverance never faltered as he graduated as the magna cum laude of his batch.

To give back for all the blessings he has received, Jayson is now a part-time instructor in STI College– Alabang, continuing to inspire fellow STIers.

Adding golden feathers to his cap has appeared to be one of Kristofferson Ongjoco’s favorite hobbies lately. An alumnus of the Diploma in Computer Science and BS Computer Science (BSCS) programs of STI College – Sta. Maria, Kristofferson, now known as Sir Toffer, is one of the school’s brightest minds.

Working as a professor in STI College – Sta. Maria and now being part of the faculty with his mentors, Sir Toffer remains a student ready to embrace new learning and opportunities every day. After completing the Training and Assessment Methodologies1 (TAM 1) in 2009, he passed the

Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) PC Operations NC II Assessment and the Hardware Servicing NC II Assessment. He also became part of the Bulacan TESDA Assessment Force in PC Operations NC II and Hardware Servicing NC II. He then continued on to compete and eventually became the Region III Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE) Champion in Animated Film – Faculty

Sir Toffer keeps the momentum in his career alive. On October 2011, he competed in the TESDA Web Development Competition and successfully made it again. His work is now the official website of TESDA Region III of which he is now the web administrator. Furthermore, in the Central Luzon Regional Skills Competition organized by TESDA held on January 25-26, 2012, he won first place.

Today, Sir Toffer has become a living example for his students to follow, and an inspiration to his mentors and now colleagues on how they can touch and make a difference in their students’ lives.

Defensor (3rd yr. BSHRM students) together with their coach Mr. Armand Nening bagged the second prize award for the table setting category.

Around 25 universities, colleges, and culinary schools in the Metro Manila and nearby provinces battled it out in the elimination, wherein only seven schools, together with STI College – Global City, qualified.

Victory for Filipino Values

STI bagged the bronze award in the prestigious 2013 PANATA Awards in a ceremony at the InterContinental Hotel in Makati City on January 31, 2013.

Launched in 2009, the PANATA Awards is an annual recognition program of the Philippine Association of National Advertisers (PANA), which aims to recognize member organizations for their outstanding communication campaigns and projects that promote exemplary Filipino values.

All entries were judged on their strength in promoting one or more of the following Filipino values: love of family, respect for elders, faithfulness, philanthropy/generosity, volunteerism, industriousness, prudence, love of country or heroism, adaptability/flexibility/resilience, humility, obedience, loyalty, reliability, and honesty/integrity.

STI joined the PANATA Awards for the first time this year with its sole entry, the 2nd Voice of the Youth (VOTY) National Oratorical Competition: Rediscovering Filipino Values, under the “Cause Marketing – Special Events” category. The VOTY is an annual nationwide competition participated by fourth year high school students from public and private schools, aimed to encourage students to develop their English communication skills for global competency, as well as to enhance critical thinking through the art of public speaking.

The entry emphasized on VOTY’s advocacy to challenge the youth to take a stand and relive traditional Filipino values with its theme, “Rediscovering Filipino Values: I See. I Act. I Advocate.”

The STI Foundation together with the STI network of schools, Department of Education (DepEd), and National Youth Commission (NYC) once again gathered the brightest young orators from select private and public high schools nationwide in the 3rd Voice of the Youth (VOTY) National Oratorical Competition.

Over 600 participating high schools battled it out in the Divisional and Cluster Levels of the competition until only 12 stood out and made it to the National Finals held on February 26, 2013 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati City.

With the theme “Your Choice. My Future: Selecting Responsible Leaders for a Better Nation,” young orators tackled one of the most relevant topics in the country as the 2013 National Elections will unfold.

Everyone has a big childhood dream. Some children may dream of

becoming knights and princesses, others want to become doctors,

lawyers, engineers, astronauts, and scientists when they grow up.

Former Mr. STI Herbert Victor “Hervi” Narvaez once dreamed of becoming a commercial airline pilot. He ended up choosing a different career path,

but he has touched down in different cities around the world.

A Turn of Fate

Hervi grew up in a simple household in San Andres, Manila. His parents owned a catering business that provided their family with a fairly comfortable life.

It was in the early years of Hervi’s studies in an Engineering program in an exclusive private institution when their family business started to decline. Because he wanted to help lessen their family’s expenses, Hervi decided to postpone his college education for a while.

Determined to help his parents and be able to continue his studies, Hervi started to work different jobs — he experienced working as a service crew in a fast food chain, a clerk in a convenience store, and a cashier in a video rental store, among others. When he was able to save enough to continue his studies, he decided to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree at STI College – Shaw.

As a result of his diligence and hard work as a working student, Hervi landed a job in the Information Technology industry immediately after graduation. Through a leading global business process outsourcing company, Hervi provided technical services support for Dell, one of the largest computer technology corporations in the world.

Makes It BigMr. STI A Leader in the Making

“Someday, people will look up to me as a leader,” Hervi kept this in mind while he was working in the corporate world. A few months later in his first job, he decided to join TELUS International, the second largest telecommunications company in Canada, as a Telecommunications Technician. Because of his outstanding performance, he was promoted to Team Leader of the Consumer Technical Support group after just one year on the job.

Today, Hervi works as an Operations Manager at TELUS International, directly working with top management and international clients. He has also helped establish various businesses in Canada and Guatemala.

Hervi considers his entire journey in life, with its ups and downs, as an inspiration to never stop moving forward. “Success doesn’t have a secret ingredient. What matters is how much you crave for it. I thought about that because when my family decided to run a catering business, trying times came to us and that’s when I decided that I will do everything to succeed so I can help my family and make them proud,” Hervi shares.

We may forget our childhood dreams as we get older, but some believe that our childhood dreams have a lot to do with our current success. Hervi wanted to fly when he was a kid; while he didn’t end up becoming a pilot, he’s still bound to soar to greater heights.

Choosing the right leader is one of the first steps in working effectively with a group and is also a crucial responsibility for each individual member because selecting a good leader can take the entire group to higher levels of success and progress.

An effective leader must possess abilities that will help in surpassing the group’s expectations. However, these qualities may depend on the objectives and priorities of the group or community. Leaders can be found anywhere there’s a need for initiative and collaboration among people working together to achieve a common goal. And while the responsibilities of the group’s individual members may differ from those of the leader, their active participation and involvement remain critical to the group’s success.

As individuals in larger communities, one of our most important roles is to educate ourselves and be aware of the things that matter to us. Whether in choosing our country’s next leaders or the officers of our school club, speaking out and being involved in making decisions can help us achieve more than we can imagine. Because for every opportunity to be involved in the quest for the greater good, sometimes all it takes is just one voice — from our group, our school, our community — to be heard to make a huge difference.

After a successful tree planting activity at the foot of Mt. Banahaw last year, STI College – Lucena spearheaded another project for a cause. This time, it’s Takbo Para sa Bundok Banahaw, a fun run wherein more than 500 individuals from different areas in Lucena participated, including students and faculty members of STI College – Lucena.

The fun run had three categories: 3k, 5k, and 10k. All the participants received certificates and the winners were awarded with medals by Vice Mayor Roderick Alcala, who also ran in the 3k category.

STI College – Tanauan enthusiastically participated in a Fun Run for the Orphans held on March 24, 2012 at the Fernando Air Base Grandstand in Lipa City, Batangas.

Almost 40 National Service and Training Program (NSTP) students, faculty members, and staff joined in this worthy cause and ran in the 5k category.

NSTP Instructor Benjamin Pagco imparts, “Knowing that it was the orphans who benefitted from this fun run gave us an extra energy boost to run with all our strength. It was such an exhilarating experience as we realized that in our own way, we were able to bring hope to these children.”

Leaving a Mark with Every Step

The Fun Run for the Orphans was organized by the 440th Aircraft Maintenance Group and aims to promote the importance of being healthy and fit, and at the same time extend a helping hand to the orphaned children of Sr. Marian Bertilla Vangelista’s Home for Children.

Mr. Bill Marlow Estinal, a faculty member of STI College – Lucena and also the over-all chairman of the event, shares, “It was such a liberating experience to see different people running as one team for one cause. At the end of the day, it does not matter who outruns who because we are all winners here.”

This advocacy aimed to awaken environmental consciousness among various members of the community and to accumulate funds for planting indigenous trees in Mt. Banahaw. The activity was furthered strengthened with the support of the local government officials and different organizations.

1998 marked the first Halalan partnership of ABS-CBN and STI. Charie Villa, then ABS-CBN’s News Gathering Head, shared that “the network had been reporting on the precinct counts since several elections ago. ABS-CBN began to take its reporting a notch higher in 1998 by tying up with STI to provide a more systematic tally and tabulation of results.” This partnership has mobilized more than 5,000 STI students, faculty members, and staff nationwide to work together for a comprehensive election coverage and media quick count in the country.

For the third time, ABS-CBN chose STI to be its partner for the Halalan coverage to provide Filipinos early election results with the emphasis on the correct sampling of vote to get the profile of how Filipinos voted nationwide with the help of 12,000 student volunteers from STI schools nationwide. The objective of the partnership remains to be bringing fast and reliable vote counts to the public, in the words of STI President and CEO Monico V. Jacob, “STI and ABS-CBN share the same objective, and that is to help the country attain its goals through clean elections.”

On May 14, 2007, the fourth time that STI partners with ABS-CBN, STI deployed more than 14,000 volunteers in around 22,000 precincts covering 48 provinces nationwide. STI VP for School Operations and Co-Chair of STI Halalan 2007 Committee Resty O. Bundoc concludes, “Finally, it is a story of success… The ABS-CBN and STI Media Count worked because it is backed up by experience, driven by commitment to serve the public, powered by technology, and fueled by the idealism of the Filipino youth.”

With the automation of the elections in 2010, ABS-CBN and STI has sealed their partnership for the year-round campaign, Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo (BMPM): Ako ang Simula. The BMPM team set up registrations nationwide to call on Boto Patrollers or citizen journalists who have volunteered to be watchdogs in their communities. Tagged as “Patrol ng Kabataan Para sa Bayan,” STI Boto Patrollers were part of the community refered to as “a people power with new technology.”

As STI’s partnership with ABS-CBN spans for more than a decade, STI will once again work hand-in-hand with ABS-CBN in the upcoming 2013 national election polls by conducting voter’s education to the public, from Luzon to Visayas and Mindandao. And as Citizen STI, STIers will be part of this quest for clean elections by serving as Bayan Patrollers during the on-the-ground activities of Bayan Mo, I-Patrol Mo: Tayo Na! Halalan 2013.

STI’s second partnership with ABS-CBN for Halalan 2001 gathered over 13,000 volunteers from various STI campuses nationwide to help ensure that an honest, orderly, and peaceful election was upheld. It also enabled STI to showcase the pivotal role of technology in bringing the latest election results.

Since social media blasted into our lives, we’ve seen a lot of changes in the way people talk and write to express themselves. While numerous buzzwords have emerged in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, we can also see a decline when it comes to the proper use of grammar. Chances are, when we encounter a grammatical error in a post or tweet, we let it slide. However, you have to keep in mind that, aside from our background and education, we are also sometimes judged by how we speak and write — our ability to communicate.

Here’s a few common grammar mistakes and find out if you have also committed a social blunder:

You’re vs. YourThough they sound alike, these two words are different as night and day. “You’re” is the contracted form of “you are.” While, “your” is the possessive form and used to express something that belongs to “you.”

Examples:

I’m glad that you’re finally learning how to swim.

At such a young age, your cooking skills are very impressive.

It’s vs. ItsSince only an apostrophe differentiates these two words, people often mix it up. To avoid confusion, remember that “it’s” is the contracted form of “it is” and “it has.” Meanwhile, “its” is a possessive form of the pronoun “it,” meaning “something belonging to it.”

Examples:

It’s been a long and tiring day.

The bird lost some of its feathers when it fell from the tree.

Then vs. ThanThis is another pair of words that is frequently misused. Bear in mind that “then” indicates time or when you talk about a sequence of event and giving step-by-step instructions. On the contrary, “than” is used when expressing comparisons.

Examples:

I think History is more interesting than Math.

Our parents invite our friends to eat with us every now and then.

Advice vs. AdviseThough these two words are almost similar in meaning, the difference lies in how they are used and should never be interchangeable. “Advice” is used as a noun that means suggestion or recommendation whereas “advise” is a verb that refers to the act of giving advice.

Examples:

My dad gives sound advice so everyone listens to him.

I was advised not to buy a new laptop since the one I’m using right now is still working perfectly well.

Into vs. In ToEven professional writers often get stumped with this pair of words, but if you focus on the message the confusion clears up. “Into” is a preposition that expresses movement, action or transformation. “In to,” on the contrary, is the adverb “in” followed by the preposition “to” and is generally short for “in order to.”

Examples:

In the story of Cinderella, the carriage turned into a pumpkin when the clock struck 12.

In the old days, children believed that the tooth fairy comes in to replace their lost tooth with a small payment.

The true spirit of Christmas prevailed once again as STI students, faculty members, and staff from the STI Headquarters and STI Foundation got together on December 11, 2012 to share the holiday cheers with a number of children and media partners. Dubbed Celebrating a Childlike Christmas Year 3, the whole team celebrated another day of fun, sharing, and learning at the Enchanted Kingdom in Sta. Rosa, Laguna with 40 children from ChildHope Asia Philippines.

The one-of-a-kind yuletide treat was participated in by 2nd year BS Hotel & Restaurant Management (BSHRM) and BS Tourism Management (BSTM) students of STI College – Global City who prepared exciting activities and sumptuous meals for the kids and guests.

Gracing this year’s outreach event are STI’s friends from various media organizations including Malaya, People’s Journal, Manila Standard Today, Manila Times, Balita, LOQAL.ph, GMA 7’s Protégé, Studio 23, ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda, and ABS-CBN Foundation.

ChristmasLike No Other

Nozomi Fortune Services, Inc., one of the country’s pioneers in manpower contracting, has partnered with STI Education Services Group, Inc. (STI-ESG) to become forerunners in the unique education program named Program for Resurgence of Industrial Development and Excellence (P.R.I.D.E.).

P.R.I.D.E. is an innovative education program, launched by Nozomi about a year ago, which aims to simultaneously grant free collegiate education and work experience to beneficiaries known as “student participant trainees.”

Inked on December 20, 2012, the partnership will allow the trainees to enroll in their chosen courses in selected STI campuses nationwide while concurrently working in the accredited business enterprise of Nozomi. Strengthened

by its continued quest to provide better opportunities to the underprivileged Filipino youth, and with STI’s strong network of colleges and education centers in key locations nationwide, college education is now more accessible to P.R.I.D.E. trainees.

“We are looking forward to this partnership because this gives us an opportunity to extend our assistance by providing quality education to the underprivileged high school graduates. As early as now, we are already geared to support them as they learn how to balance their work, life, and studies. As an educational institution, this joint venture is significant to us because it means being able to help strengthen the work force and increase the employability and productivity of a person,” shared Monico V. Jacob during the contract signing.

Over 30,000 students from different STI campuses across the country once again experienced a one-of-a-kind learning opportunity as STI held its 18th National Youth Convention (NYC) in key cities nationwide. With the theme “STI Extreme: Unleash the X Factors in You,” the 18th STI NYC kicked off on November 29, 2012 at the CAP Convention Center in Camp John Hay, Baguio City. The convention ran until March 2013 with further stops in Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, Tacloban, Manila, Cagayan De Oro, Koronadal, Davao, Legazpi, and Puerto Princesa.

The 18th STI NYC covered various topics that are highly relevant among today’s youth with the guidance of seasoned professionals and inspiring speakers from various industries.

The first topic, “Extreme Definition: Exercise Your Beliefs,” was tackled by ABS-CBN’s group of journalists and Head of the Citizen Journalism Unit, Inday Espina-Varona to encourage the students to become participative, responsible,

On the other hand, STI College – Bacoor instructor Ricky Bunag highlighted the importance of teamwork and strong sense of community among STIers in collaborating to achieve their goals with the second topic, “Extreme Connection: Explore Your Network.” Lastly, “Extreme Revolution: Expand Your Horizons” was discussed by Jet Nera, Managing Director of SHINE JGNera Training Consultants, to inspire the students to become lifelong learners and to pursue excellence in all facets of life.

The STI NYC is the highly anticipated annual gathering of STI students that provides an alternative learning venue for students to discover the latest trends in technology, acquire the most in-demand and job-ready skills, and interact with fellow STIers from different STI campuses nationwide. Now on its 18th year, the STI NYC remains the biggest and longest running educational caravan in the country.

Originally scheduled for release in December 2012, anxious Superman fans had to wait further as the much-anticipated movie’s release was moved to June 2013. The DC Comics superhero’s movie began brewing in 2008 by Warner Brothers and is under the helms of director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan.

Starring Henry Cavill as Superman, with Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Michael Shannon as General Zod, the long runway for the movie had given rise to its share of issues like Cavill, who is not American, landing the title role of the all-American superhero, to the movie posters showing Superman’s new costume, and yet another with the Man of Steel in handcuffs. With tight-lipped Snyder and Nolan, there are no let ups to date as to how the twists of the plot will go.

Dan Brown, author of “The Da Vinci Code,” marks the return of his famous character renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon in his latest book “Inferno.” The story is set in Italy, and in his official website, Brown promises his readers to a “journey deep into this (Dante’s Inferno) mysterious realm — a landscape of codes, symbols, and more than a few secret passageways.”

What was once a futuristic theme for movies is about to become a reality within your reach. Google unveiled a titanium-framed glasses headset during their I/O conference in June 2012. The project showcased eyeglasses which had audio and video capability, a built-in compass, and accelerometer, which is controlled by head movements.

To date, a lot of improvements is in place with much more to come, Google says. Dubbed as the Google Glass project, its head Babak Parviz announces in an interview with IEEE Spectrum that they are in the works to “constantly try out new ideas of how the platform can be used to make the hardware and software

more robust.” This is in time for its targeted release to a select group of developers during the first quarter of 2013.

The public will however get a hand of this device by 2014, but definitely, with its public blog in Google Plus (https://plus.google.com/+projectglass/posts), people can be up-to-date with latest developments and can even post comments and reactions to the progress of the project day-to-day.

James (center), a true-blooded motorcycle racer, continues to triumph his own life’s race.


Almost 60 novice and expert motorcycle riders from the Philippines and Malaysia raced their way to the finish line at the Carmona Racing Circuit in Cavite on November 25, 2012 for the 6th Inside Racing Grand Prix (IRGP), a venue for top motorcycle riders to pit against each other and prove their supremacy on the race track. The riders competed for seven (7) categories, namely 130cc Juniors Automatic, 150cc Masters, 115cc Juniors Underbone, 160cc Automatic, 180cc Underbone Grand Prix, 180 Automatic Grand Prix, and the 150cc MotoIR Grand Prix.

Determined to outrace the other riders for the coveted title, 1st year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology student James Christopher D. Barcial from STI College – Balagtas emerged as the champion in the 160cc category of the IRGP 6, making him one of the youngest champion riders in the country today.

At his young age, James has already made his mark in the country’s motorcycle racing circuit and has also been featured in a number of television shows, newspaper articles, and sports websites in the past.

Founded in 2007, the IRGP race is an annual motorsports event organized by Inside Racing, a racing magazine, and supported by the country’s largest motorbike manufacturers and distributors. IRGP aims to uplift motorcycle racing by bringing together amateur and professional motorcycle enthusiasts, and to promote the motorcycle as a form of personal transportation in the country.

Cooking with the Champs!

High school students in the Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela areas are receiving added training in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), thanks to the students, faculty members, and staff of STI College – Caloocan.

For years now, the Junior Computer Club (JCC) of STI College – Caloocan has been honing 3rd year and 4th year high school students by providing them with technical and leadership trainings aimed to prepare them once they graduate. Last July, a new batch of JCC officers and members were welcomed and inducted.

Also held recently, STI College – Caloocan has helped facilitate the ICT Week of Tinajeros National High School. To continue with their objective of enriching the ICT skills and knowledge of the youth in their area, students, faculty members, and staff of STI College – Caloocan provided free seminars on MovieMaker as presented by in-house graphic artist Mr. Crisdel

A month after, 2nd yr. HRS student Christine Legaspi grabbed 3rd place in the Sinigang Challenge with her unique red snapper and prawns sinigang dish during the Grand Culinary Challenge, a cooking contest open to all colleges and universities nationwide aimed to develop the culinary skills and instill friendly competition among HRM students.

With the series of awards that the students of STI College – Meycauayan have won, the school intends to participate in more competitions that will help hone their students and expose them to various practices and trends in the industry today.
