On-site calibration maximizes power plant availability Endesa Generación saves time and money with Endress+Hauser calibration services Endesa Generación is the leading power generation company in Spain, with an output of 35,230 GWh and a Spanish market share of 33.4% in total ordinary regime generation (generation of electricity through traditional non-renewable sources and large hydro-electric plants - data from the first half of 2011). Endesa Generación owns 25 power plants in Spain (nine in the Iberian Peninsula, five in the Balearics, nine in the Canary Islands and another two in Ceuta and Melilla). Endesa Generación’s requirements: Ensure the accurate and reliable fuel consumption measurement in power generation engines. • Propose a solution to perform calibration as quickly as possible. Endesa Generación’s main objective is to optimize the company’s competitive position by producing electricity at minimum cost. They achieve this by maximizing the availability of equipment and facilities, and ensuring the safety of people and assets, while respecting the natural environment. To measure the fuel (diesel and fuel oil) consumption of the engines that generate power, Endesa Generación puts its trust in the quality and accuracy of Endress+Hauser Promass flowmeters. This measurement is the basis for the calculation of greenhouse gases emissions. To ensure optimum operation, flowmeter calibration has to be performed as quickly as possible, and only when gensets are stopped. Endress+Hauser allows Endesa Generación to meet this requirement by providing on-site calibration services.

Mobile rig enables quick flowmeter calibration on site

Our solution

Calibration of a flowmeter involves disassembling it, packaging the device and sending it to a specialist laboratory. During the time the device is unavailable, a substitute flowmeter needs to be mounted into the process. With 58 Coriolis flowmeters sited in different diesel plants in Ceuta and Melilla, and also across the Balearic and Canary islands (Menorca, Tenerife, Lanzarote and el Hierro), periodical calibration could rapidly turn into a nightmare for Endesa Generación.

Endress+Hauser proposed a flexible, mobile solution that enables flowmeter calibration to be performed on-site.This not only simplifies but also shortens the calibration process.

The mobile calibration set is shipped to the required location. On site, the Endress+Hauser service technician performs calibration according to the Endress+Hauser quality standards as written in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and delivers the appropriate certificates.

1 Scheduling If needed, we visit the facility to define the scope of the service

and specific details. Our service coordinator gets in touch in good time to schedule a date according to the customer’s needs and plant availability.

2 Flexible, mobile calibration All the hi-tech equipment is mounted and packaged in three flight

cases. The mobile calibration set is ready for shipment by air or sea to the required location.

3 Execution On site, our qualified service technicians perform the calibration

of flowmeters according to our Standard Operating Procedures. In Ceuta, 11 Promass Coriolis flowmeters were calibrated within three working days.

4 Completion For each calibrated device, we deliver a Certificate of Calibration of

UUT (Unit Under Test) as well as the master meter’s SCS certificate.

“At Endesa Central Diesel de Ceuta,, we need to periodically calibrate11 flowmeters.We thought that we would have to disassemble them and send them for calibration to the Endress+Hauser laboratory with consequent loss of time. As we had only one substitute flowmeter, the calibration process would have lasted several months. Thanks to the new mobile calibration flow rig, the work was executed on site in just three days.”
