Modern Vernacular Design Studio2014 Summer
Fallingwater | Mill Run, PA | Summer 2014
Sculpture CoverFallingwater | Mill Run, PA
Objective: Initially we were tasked with designing a cover for a Peter Voulkos sculpture located outside of the guest house at Fallingwater. The design came from the shifting and chaotic nature of the sculpture interacting with the site and its surroundings.

Result: The final creation resulted in a site specific cover that captured rainfall and directed into the spring fed pool. The sculpture cover is used during the winter months.
Mallet Design ProjectOxford, OH
Objective: Design a mallet that is to act as an extension of your arm.
Result: I designed and crafted a mallet that was smaller in size and depended on precise movements rather than blunt force. I think this mallet shows the importance of detail and precision.

SITE PLAN MODEL AND FLOOR PLANS
Objective: Design a three season space and four cabanas to connect to an existing structure that hosts visitors to Fallingwater.
Result: As a group we designed shotgun style cabanas that were minimally sized and stepped with the land. We created a design that worked with the landscape and allowed the visitors to have an intimate connection with their surroundings.

SITE PLAN AND FLOOR PLANS RENDERINGS
Result: As a group we created a design which funnels users to a central core where they can then access the rest of the building. Our design frames important views and focuses on the concept of collaboration.

Objective: Our first task was to design an Ionic order to become more familiar with classical detailing and design strategies. Next, using the Ionic order I designed, I created a Music School.
Result: I learned to use classical design strategies such as tartan grids and the wing and pavilion method. Through this project I gained a much stronger understanding of the details used in classical design and a better understanding of the roots of modern architecture.

Objective: Design a modernist library in the courtyard of an abandoned castle outside of the city of Prague.
Result: We created a library that allowed the courtyard views of the castle to remain visible and allowed sunlight into the courtyard. We were able to do this by having our library reside primarily underground and in line with the roof with an open center. .
