Spring 2014 Psi State News 3

It is Psi State Organization’s distinct pleasure to inform you that our Southeast Regional Director, Dr. Hanna Fowler, has submitted for early decision to be nominated as a candidate for International Member-at-Large (2014-2018). She will be nominated from the floor at the International Convention in Indianapolis this summer by Psi (GA) State Organization.

Hanna is well-qualified for this office. At the state level, Hanna has served as Executive Secretary (2007-2013), President (2005-2007) and First Vice-President (2003-2005). She has chaired numerous committees including Leadership Development (2013-2015), where she has served as lead presenter for four years. She also founded and continues to coordinate the Psi State Leadership Institute, a highly anticipated event that draws participants from chapters within Psi State and neighboring state organizations.

The reputation of the Southeast Region has also benefited by her honorable service as Southeast Regional Director (2012-2014), her leadership of international committees (Chair of International Membership 2010-2012 and International Convention Rules 2008), and her contributions as a valued member of the World Fellowship (2007-2008), CTAUN Atlanta (2007-2014), SER Task Force for Committee Structure (2007-2010), International Membership (2008-2010), and the International Speakers Fund (2012-2014). By nearly all accounts, she successfully coordinated the most recent Southeast Regional Conference in Kissimmee, Florida (2013), a tremendous accomplishment befitting a highly organized and skilled leader.

On the Member-at-Large Recommendation form to the question: Why do you want to serve in this position? Dr. Fowler stated: I am passionate about DKG. I believe in its purposes, mission, and vision. Since becoming a member in 1985, DKG has filled a need in my life, growing me professionally and personally. I see myself as an investment of the Society, and I want to pay it forward!

Dr. Annie Webb Blanton’s vision for our organization called for women to unite and work toward equality and justice for women in education. I want to share Dr. Blanton’s vision. I want to unite with other Society leaders to make DKG a strong force in the decision-making process on issues facing women educators. As a product of DKG leadership training, I believe we can make the biggest difference through leadership programs at state and international levels. When we invest in key women leaders in today’s schools, we promote excellence in education and influence the future of our Society and education worldwide.

Dr. Elizabeth Barger said, “It is true that DKG must fill a particular need for each of us; but each of us must add something of strength from her own soul…” I have done lots of soul-searching. I am ready to help “Strengthen Our Society” as international Member-at-Large.

Hanna serves every level of the Society with passion, diligence, and commitment. It is Psi State Organization’s hope that your state organization will support Hanna for the office of Member-at-Large. To learn more about Dr. Fowler, please visit the website at http://www.dkg.org.

Expand Delta Kappa Gamma!

Expansion and Chapter Support Committee The Expansion and Chapter Support Committee continues to work with the District Directors to assist them with chapters that need to become active and healthy. District Directors were asked by the committee to send the chapter presidents the reasons DKG members have dropped from the organization based upon the 2013 Dropped Member Survey Results, reported by the DKG International Membership Committee. In addition, chapter presidents will receive information regarding chapter membership counts, and they will be asked to evaluate E-PALS (Energized Partner-ships Achieving Lots of Success) at the Psi State Executive Board meeting. The aforementioned information is based upon the committee’s CAP and SAP goals.

Membership Matters! The 2014 year has begun with a bang. Membership brings with it many responsibilities to Psi State, the local chapter, and yourself. To Psi State it is time for the President and Committee Chairs to pull together and get all those reports done on time. Therefore, local chapters need to get their reports in on time. Local chapters are preparing for the end of one biennium and the beginning of the next by electing new officers in time for our District Trainings throughout the state. Personally, I wish that each of you would renew your commitment to DKG and get out of the chapter and meet other sisters across the state. As we meet others, who like us, love DKG, bonds grow and DKG grows. All of us like to be nurtured and appreciated. I am asking all chapters to make it a top priority torecognize each member’s years in the society. Especially, those with twenty plus years. During Executive Board, with Gail’s permission, I would like to start recognizing members with twenty plus years. I stand in awe of those ladies who have been in DKG for forty and fifty years. What dedication that is and a testament that the members are the HEART of DKG. It is most important to celebrate the successes of your members. Successes do not have to be only DKG related. Celebrate school successes such as being named Teacher of the Year, a new degree, an award, and something as special as becoming a mother or grandmother. The key is to nurture. When nurtured, a flower grows and blossoms; so will our members. Last but not least, know the ins and outs of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. The more you know about the society the more you will be willing to participate and accept new roles at the local chapter and state level. This strengthens our society and helps us to grow and be stable. Who is the Heart of Delta Kappa Gamma?

YOU ARE!!!If your chapter needs support in its efforts regarding membership, please contact the Psi State Membership Committee.

What Leadership Seminar Graduates Have to Say

Merrimac Forsyth (Iota) “I have never thought of myself as a leader. I have always been the one in the background cheering the loudest, motivating, and encouraging others to do their best. So, am I a leader? I can honestly say after this seminar – yes! I am going to let go of the tree, step out on the branch of leadership, and be courageous.”

Shelly Foster (Alpha Tau) I was blessed to be invited to attend the Leadership weekend in Macon. Our DKG sisters treated us to fun, fellowship and personal growth. I left realizing I had many skills I had never used. Learning how to use these skills and identify the skills of others has been valuable in all areas of my personal and professional life. I strongly urge each of you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Sharon Barrow (Tau) The DKG Leadership Seminar reminded me of several important factors that are critical in every-day leadership opportunities, presented aspects of effective communication that I may not have given much thought to previously, grouped me with a number of educational professionals who also wanted to grow and provided me with a safe environment to discuss and practice these communication skills. I highly recommend to other Psi sisters investing time and energy into the weekend. (The food and laughter wasn’t bad either.)

The Leadership Institute Presents Dr. Lace Brogden

“Lace is a mother, a wife, a gardener, a teacher, a professor, a committed and dedicated DKG member! You don’t want to miss the energy, vitality, revolutionary teaching techniques, AND her love for this Society.” Dr. Hanna Fowler

Dr. Lace Marie Brogden will lead Georgia’s 2014 Leadership Institute this August. Dr. Brogden is an Associate Professor of education and - Director of the Programme du Baccalauréat en education, the French language teacher education program, at the University of Regina, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. She began her professional life as a French Immersion teacher and then worked in curriculum development for Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education before transitioning to postsecondary education 15 years ago. Her research interests include auto ethnography, the negotiation of linguistic subjectivities in preservice and in-service teaching contexts, and the impact of architecture(s) on identity performance/production. Dr. Brogden has an impressive record of publications, presentations, research, scholarships, grant-writing, course development, and awards both in DKG and in the education profession.

On the personal front, Lace and her husband celebrated their silver anniversary this year, and she says they definitely have a life project that seems to be working.” They have two terrific kids, 15-year old Nash, and 11-year old Hannah Gray. In the winter, they are most often at the rink (the curling rink watching Nash or the skating rink for Hannah’s vignette), and when the snow leaves, one need look no further than their garden. Lace says, “I travel often, my family is the most important thing in the world to me, and my quotidian is small.”

Lace notes that she has had wonderful opportunities and has been given many gifts through her involvement in the So-ciety. She attended the Leadership/Management Seminar in 2004, was an international scholarship recipient (the Eunah Temple Holden Scholarship, 2005), received a Lucille Cornetet Professional Development Award (2008), and, most recently, in 2010, Lace received a Golden Gift Research Stipend. These honors and privileges have motivated her to serve the Society to the best of her ability. She served as State Organization President in the Province of Saskatchewan from 2001-2003. At the International level, she has served on the International Research Committee (2002-04), Golden Gift Fund Committee (2006-08), as Chair of the International Scholarships Committee (2008-10), the International Speaker’s Fund (2010-12), and as Area Representative–Canada on the Administrative Board (2010-12). Currently, she is honored to serve on the 2012-14 Interna-tional Administrative Board as the Northwest Regional Director.

At the Leadership Institute in Macon, Lace will encourage us to reflect on balance, work with us on setting personal and collective goals, and challenge us to imagine possibilities for leadership within and beyond the Society.

Georgia Gold Shines in the Community!Iota Member Represents DKG in Jamaica

Mrs. Merrimac Locklear Forsyth, 1st Vice President of Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, along with her husband, Marty and two boys, Daniel and Hunter spent the summer working at Noah’s Ark Children’s Home of Jamaica. Noah’s Ark Children’s Home was founded by Mack and Marilyn Locklear, Merrimac’s parents. Mrs. Forsyth’s parents have served the Jamaican community for eighteen years. While there, she visited a local school, Hague Infant and Primary School. Mrs. Forsyth met the Principal and Assistant Principal of the school and informed them about DKG including the seven purposes of the Society, the service projects in and out of the United States, and discussed all three areas of the Society. (Local, State, and International) Merrimac was fortunate enough to be given permission to help lead the morning devotion with the entire sixth grade class. The students were kind enough to sing The Jamaican National Anthem to Mrs. Forsyth. Their beautiful voices brought tears to her eyes. She also was privileged to visit with a teacher and her second grade class. During the visit, many once in a lifetime memories were made. Merrimac says that she will cherish providing service to the orphanage in Jamaica, and having the chance to represent her Society which is near and dear to her heart.

EEC Needs Your Input and Participation to Impact Education Worldwide!

Thank you to all the presidents who sent the EEC reports required by International. We may wonder why this information is needed and how it is used. Let me offer some answers: EEC is an umbrella committee which is designed to encompass many of the areas in which DKG members serve at every level from the local chapter to the International arena. The missions of the committee are:

To promote Schools for Africa-This is done through monetary donations directly to the US Fund for UNICEF and reported in the biennial report. This is also done through Global Awareness programs which may include having someone familiar with any of the countries encompassed in the Schools for Africa educational opportunity, roles and opportunities for women, etc. of that country as a speaker; going to a museum and highlighting the art developed in a country; having a student from an area college who is familiar with the country present a program; or having a travel agent present information about the country.

To Support Early-career Educators-This is done through mentoring teachers who have not yet taught 5 years or who have changed area of service. New teachers are leaving the profession at unbelievable rates and often knowing someone in the school or with teaching experience is willing to become a true colleague may make the difference. Goody bags, an occasional meal away from school just to chat, help developing lesson plans to teach difficult concepts, a kind or encouraging word could be just the support any teacher needs! International wants to know what we are doing in GA.

To increase members’ personal and professional pride-Wonder why we have several events each biennium which are leadership oriented? Part of the reason we suggest women for membership is that we see leadership potential in them. We grow when we have outstanding leadership from key women educators. DKG does things on every level other organizations cannot/ do not do because we are proud of being educators making differences in those we teach. We, too, need to be refreshed, encouraged, and recognized so we continue to feel we do make a difference. Psi State has many recognition opportunities each biennium. We must remember to celebrate the things each member or each chapter does to promote educational excellence. Share with others how your chapter is celebrating the personal and professional growth of your members!

To focus on educational excellence-We do this through promoting SEE, providing programs that promote excellence in education, impacting educational law and policy by supporting legislation and/or candidates that support education, running for public office, voting, and becoming more aware or local, state and national issues that impact education, doing/reading/sharing pedagogical research, and being aware of current “hot topics” in education.

To promote DKG and United Nations relationship-CTAUN has a conference in Atlanta to join educators, students, and concerned citizens with distinguished speakers to explore how the UN and the international community promote disarmament and confront current threats to peace, such as climate change, gender and economic inequality, hunger, and terrorism. Especially crucial is the number of children worldwide deprived of even a primary education. This year’s conference is Saturday, March 8, at Georgia State University.

To increase members’ global awareness of culture and education-Every chapter can have a program that increases global awareness by following the suggestions listed in SFA. These 2 concerns have the same intent and are easily achievable with a little thought by the chapters’ program chair. DKG has a presence in 18 countries. There is nothing that makes one feel better than to have visitors know something about the country in which they are! Through SFA we have a presence in 13 countries on the African continent-each unique while sharing many commonalities. Explore!!!

To impact educational law and policy locally, nationally, and internationally-Being informed is the first step in finding a way to have impact! Read! Discuss! Question! Contact legislators, commissioners, board members. Make your voice heard. You, as an educator, know whereof you speak! (And perhaps you could run for office!)

Happy 100th Birthday to a Golden DKG Member! The following letter was received from an extremely proud daughter of a loyal and extraordinary DKG member.

My mother, Carolyn Latimer Harvley, is a member of Beta Delta chapter. On December 27, 2013, she will celebrate her 100th birthday. She was initiated in April, 1958 in Dallas, Texas, and I think her chapter was Delta Tau. She has been a member for 55 years! She was 16 years old when Dr. Annie Webb Blanton and eleven others founded the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International in 1929 in Austin, Texas. Over the years, she served on many committees and held many offices, among them chapter president and regional program coordinator. Because of her, I learned very early in life how to wear the Delta Kappa Gamma pin, to hum the Delta Kappa Gamma song, and to appreciate the history and the forward thinking of the Society. My mother set an example for me both as a wife and mother and as a professional educator. She took me to several of her Delta Kappa Gamma meetings, sharing the business side of chapter meetings and the program side. I saw what it took to plan a good meeting and I still remember some of the programs that I attended as a teenager. Some of our summer travels included state and regional DKG conferences. I remember my mother conducting interviews with applicants for her chapter’s grant-in-aid in our living room and that DKG meetings were always dress-up affairs. My mother’s life demonstrates that saying yes to the opportunities for service and leadership through Delta Kappa Gamma strengthens professional and personal development. She is the epitome of what a member should be, profes-sional, committed, and active in every sense of the word.

Sincerely, Zena Harvley-Felder, Ph.D. Member, Alpha Tau Chapter

Patsy Grimsley of the Alpha Chi Chapter has authored an entertaining and educational juvenile fictional novel, The Miracle of the Purple Martin Gourds. Although the book is suited for the intermediate level, ages eight through twelve, its appeal has crossed generations and is being enjoyed by youngsters and the “young-at-heart.” Officially released this past summer, the book has already been featured and highly regarded in the national quarterly, The Purple Martin Update as well as endorsed by the Education Outreach Director, Louise Chambers in behalf of the Purple Martin Conservation Association (PMCA). The Purple Martins are the only birds that have a national magazine devoted to it. In addition, they are the only birds that depend on humans for their nesting sites. While educational, readers too will be incredibly inspired and entertained throughout the enthralling tale of a Georgia farm family, a ridiculed flea market mutt, and the amazing world of the Purple Martins. The setting is authentically “down-home”, reflective of Crimson Sweet watermelons, gourds, family, and a whole hog barbeque. The plot dramatically underscores eleven year old Abby’s unconditional love for her very odd looking mutt, Sophie. But it is the special bond that develops between the Purple Martin scout, Rod and the teased dog that lead to series of extraordinary events and the mysterious miracle that completely changes everything for the dog, the farm family, and the mar-tins. I trust you will find the story unforgettable and one that honors “America’s most wanted bird,” the Purple Martin. Parents who seek wholesome books for their homes and Purple Martin enthusiasts that love these remarkable birds will be pleased with this story. The story line ingeniously reveals many fascinating attributes about the martins. For example, one character, “Papa” whose deceased father was a Cherokee Native American, explains to his young granddaughter, Abby how the custom of gourd hanging first began with the Native Americans, in particular, the Cherokees. The Miracle of the Purple Martin Gourds may be purchased in book or e-book formats via online retail outlets including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, the PMCA Market Place Store, Tate Publishing, and many more. The publisher has produced a brief commercial book trailer that may be viewed on YouTube (search by author’s name). Patsy has visited several schools and civic organizations, presenting a captivating audio-visual as part of her book signings. A former Teacher of the Year in her school district, Patsy is a retired educator who lives with her husband Jeff in the Watermelon Capital of the World, Cordele, Georgia. Their daughter and her husband both teach in a nearby county.

Book signing event hosted by Carroll’s Country Meat and Sausage Store in Ashburn, Ga. Pictured with author Patsy Grimsley is Jaylyn Weitman, an avid reader and

fan of the book.

TV personality, Ruthie Garner (seated far left) of Albany’s WALB-TV (ABC/NBC affiliate) interviews Patsy (seated far right), a guest for the TV station’s live broadcast of the Watermelon Days event in Cordele, Ga. Televised from Flint River Pottery, a home and garden store there.
