MISS TEEN AMERICA MISSION STATEMENT:

“The Miss Teen America Program was founded on the principle that the future of our world is de-

pendent upon the leadership qualities of today’s youth. We believe that involvement in commu-

nity service should be both encouraged and rewarded. We further believe that in order to be-

come a strong leader a young woman must be a well-rounded individual. She must challenge

herself scholastically, she must be poised, and she must be comfortable with herself in respect to

her learned and natural talents. She must possess a strong desire to effect a change in her world,

and to set an example for others to do the same. In the spirit of competition, she must be gra-

cious.

With this in mind, we provide the forum for young women to challenge themselves to be their

best, and we reward them for their efforts.”

Judging Criteria and Wardrobe Interview Competition

Delegates will have the opportunity to express themselves on current issues and attitudes that affect her

and her community. The judges will be looking for a young woman with a strong sense of reasoning,

who can articulate her opinions effectively. Interviews will begin with the contestant’s 30 second intro-

duction of choice- a natural, welcoming opening statement, not a monologue or speech- followed by

five minutes of questions from the judges. The only people in the room will be the contestant, five

judges, and Judges’ Coordinator.

You will be meeting the judges for the first time and therefore it is most important that

you select an outfit that you feel will enhance your image without drawing attention

away from what you have to say. You will also be seated, so select something that

will be comfortable and lay properly when moving between sitting and standing.

Examples would be an age-appropriate suit, wrap dress, or blouse and skirt with a

pump shoe or kitten heel. Nylons are optional. Opening Production & Fashion Modeling

Our opening production will be simple walking patterns as well as the contestant in-

troducing themselves into the microphone. After each introduction, the contestant

will walk the runway and model the outfit of their choice; the modeling presentation

will be scored.

For this portion, each delegate will wear an outfit of her choice. It must be age appropri-

ate and portray the delegate’s teen spirit. This outfit should be fun and trendy! Shorts

must have no less than a 3-inch inseam and be age appropriate. Judges will be looking

for personality, confidence and stage presence.

Fitness Competition

Contestants will be showcasing their sense of health, physical fitness, and confidence in

aerobic/ fitness wear. Outfits may be one or two pieces, above the knee- no pants, ca-

pris, skirts or costumes. Contestants will be taught a walking pattern that will be used in all

phases of competition- no props or routines allowed. Midriffs are allowed and up to the discretion of the

contestant and her parents.

Evening Gown

Contestants will be judged on grace, poise, and elegance of car-

riage during their presentation. All gowns must be floor length, and

age appropriate. Finalists’ On-Stage Interview

Depending on the number of delegates in each age category, the

finalists will participate in an on-stage interview. They will remain in

their evening wear for this portion of the competition.

Selecting Miss Teen and Miss Jr. Teen Scoring

For each of the four phases of competition, contestants receive anywhere from 1-10 points. Each con-

testant is scored on her own merit as there is no comparison judging.

When all four preliminary competitions are complete, the scores are totaled and the top five scoring

contestants are announced. The Top Five participate in an on-stage

interview where the judges then can add another 1-10 points on to

their score. The contestant with the total highest amount of points is

the winner, next highest score is first runner up, and so on.

The scoring spreadsheets are given directly to the Executive Director

and are never made public. Each contestant may, if she wishes, re-

ceive her personal scores, judges’ feedback, and a list of where she

placed in each competition category.

Judges

Each year a diverse and savvy panel of judges is chosen specifically for their unique ability to recognize

talent. Judges are selected from areas of the entertainment industry, local business and politics and the

pageant industry, for example. They are impartial and have little to no personal knowledge of contest-

ants and are not related to anyone on the pageant staff. Each judge fills out a confidential ballot that is

not seen by other judges, nor are they allowed to discuss contestants in between phases of competition.

Optional Competitions

Aside from the required phases of competitions are fun Optionals. Optional competi-

tions are $20 each and have no bearing on the overall judging. In fact, the overall

judges don’t know who entered the optional competitions until they are awarded on

stage. This year’s Optionals are: • Academic Achievement

• Community Service

• “Journey To The Crown” essay- our scholarship competition

• Top Model/ Portfolio

Entry forms for optional competitions can be found in the paperwork section of this

packet.

After the pageant

After the state pageant is over, the new Teen and Jr. Teen titleholders will begin preparations for Miss

Teen America this July. In addition to their crowns, banners, and other great prizes, they will receive their

entry fees and one optional paid for at the national competition, as well as their lodging for Miss Teen

America. Preparations will include discussing interview preparation, selection of wardrobe, fitness goals,

and modeling coaching- but most of all the titleholder’s personal goals, wishes and dreams for Miss Teen

America.

Our new titleholders will also have appearances around their communities, though school and family will

always be priority!

ond sponsor/ad page and receive $25 off your entry fee! Sell a third ad page and receive $50

off your fee!! • ***The contestant who sells the most ad pages will receive free entry into the 2014 state pageant!

Competition Magazine Headshots

Each delegate will have a section of a page devoted to her in the Competition Magazine. A color

headshot will be needed for the publication. Please note that this does not need to be an air-

brushed glamour shot! Your headshot should look like you and represent who you are. The judges

are not judging you based on your headshot.

Sponsor/ Ad Pages

The Miss Oregon & Washington Teen America Competition Magazine is a great souvenir for both

contestants and their loved ones, and a fun venue for a delegate’s family to express their love and

support for her. Similarly, it is a wonderful opportunity for local businesses to advertise and show sup-

port for their community.

Anyone may purchase an ad page or section in an ad page- see prices below. We can accept art-

work in these formats only: .jpg, .png, .pub. Unfortunately we cannot accept any ad pages saved

in any Word format. The Competition Magazine will be available online in beautiful color format and

printed in black and white. Please make sure your ad looks good in both color and black & white.

Ad dimensions- your ad should be no bigger than 10.5” tall and 8” wide, and should be at least 300

dpi resolution. Raising money with an ad page

Helpful hint: Ten business card-sized ads will fit on one page. If ten businesses pay you $10 each for

their business card to be on your page, you have just completed your page! At $15 a card, you

have completed your page and now have extra funds to put toward Optionals competitions or your

entry fee. Or, you can split the page- five businesses paying $20 each for a business card and two

family members paying $40 each for a quarter sized page to wish you good luck, etc. The sky is the

limit!

vice on producing your ad page.

Competition Magazine, cont. Talk to potential sponsors

Still wondering how to approach a business? Take this advice direct from the Miss Teen America of-

fice:

Any corporation or small business is a potential advertiser. People that you would not normally think

of might be willing to help you out, so leave no stone unturned. Here are some examples of poten-

tial advertisers: family, friends, neighbors, Doctors, Chiropractors, Dentists, Orthodontists, Lawyers, Vet-

erinarians, bridal salons, boutiques, hair, nail and tanning salons, restaurants, gyms, and health clubs,

car dealerships and auto repair/body shops, photographers, modeling agencies, antique stores, and

even funeral homes, etc. The list is only limited by your imagination! Make a list of family and friends.

When you go out to sell (please do not attempt to sell advertising over the telephone), dress and act

in a professional manner. Ask to speak with the owner of the business or in his absence, the man-

ager. Remember that you are not only selling inexpensive advertising space, you are selling yourself

as well. Take a deep breath, relax and speak with confidence, self-esteem and enthusiasm. Allow

them to see for themselves that they are backing a winner.

Start by introducing yourself such as: “Hello, my name is ______________, and I have been selected as

a finalist in the Miss [Oregon or Washington] Teen America Program. Miss [Oregon or Washington]

Teen America is a state preliminary to Miss Teen America and the objective of the program is to en-

courage leadership, scholastic achievement, and community service for teenage women. By sup-

porting the Program, you will be obtaining inexpensive and valuable advertising space while helping

young women attain their goals and dreams. Our program books will be sold at the event and

unlike magazines and newspapers, which are eventually discarded, they will be a treasured keep-

sake for all contestants and their families. In this way, your tax deductible, one time advertisement

fee will pay for an ad that will last forever.”

Remember, if you believe in yourself and your product, your sponsors will share in your belief.

Sportsmanship and Dressing Room/Backstage Policies Sportsmanship

It is very important that all delegates, family members and friends of the pageant remember that good

sportsmanship is a must. Only one delegate in each division will be named the winner. Only a few dele-

gates will win special awards or be a finalist. However, each delegate will bring to the pageant her own

special flair. These delegates are presenting themselves and performing in front of judges and a live au-

dience. It takes unique and special people to handle those duties. This is why we believe every dele-

gate is a winner! You and your family should feel proud of this achievement and the special recognition

of representing your city.

Delegates, parents and guests displaying poor sportsmanship will be asked to leave without a refund, will

not be invited back to the pageant and will forfeit any prizes or gifts awarded.

Dressing Room and backstage rules

As a courtesy to our fellow delegates and staff members, please observe the following dressing room

guidelines: • One female is allowed in to help unpack and set up her contestant’s dressing area; one female will

be allowed in to help pack up and remove her contestant’s items • Each contestant is allowed two hanging garment bags, one shoe/miscellaneous bag, and her

makeup/hair product/toiletry case.

• Mirrors will be provided, however a contestant may bring a mirror if she chooses.

• Each delegate will be given an assigned space to set up; please use your own space and be con-

scious of others’ need for space as well. • Make sure to clearly label all your items, including shoes, garment bags, hairbrushes, etc!

• With the exception of load-in/load-out, the dressing room is closed to everyone except pageant

staff and delegates. Pageant staff will be on hand to help dress the delegates.

• If a contestant is leaving the back stage, dressing room, or immediate stage area, they must check

in with the Contestant Manager first.

Hair and Makeup

As with our national pageant, things move very quickly during the show. Due to this need for efficiency,

respect for our contestants’ personal space, and to mimic the environment at the national Miss Teen

America Pageant, stylists are not allowed in the dressing room at any time. Experienced pageant staff

will be on hand to help dress, zip, and fluff, and touch up. Stylists are welcome to meet with their con-

testants elsewhere in the hotel during non-rehearsal time or make use of the ballroom for styling before

the vendor space opens at 2:00 PM.

(For those planning on using hallway and bathroom space, please note that there will be another large

group using another area of the convention center concurrently.)

If you would like recommendations for hiring a stylist, please call or email Taryn.
