72-HourShortFILMChallengeOfficialRules

IntheUnitedStates,theChallengeisintendedforplaybythemembersoftheStudentFILMCollective.Tobecomea

membervisitwww.StudentFILMcollective.org/join

1. ELIGIBILITY:In the United States, the

Challenge is open only to individual

legalresidentsand legalvisitorsof the

United States, New York and the

GreaterNew York Area. The following

arenoteligible:employees,contractors,

directors and officers of the Student

FILMCollective,and72-HourShortFILM

Chal lenge, ("72HSFC"), its parent,

subsidiaries and affiliated companies,

distributors, web design, advertising,

fulfillment, judging and Challenge

agenciesinvolvedintheadministration,

development,fulfillmentandexecution

of this Challenge (collectively,

"ChallengeParties"),andtheimmediate

family members of each (spouse,

parent, child,sibling, grandparent,and

spouse or "step" of each) and those

living in their same households (those

personswhetherrelatedornotwholive

inthesameresidenceforatleastthree

monthsduringthetwelve-monthperiod

preceding the start date of the

Chal lenge). Outside of the United

States, residency requirements may

vary.Voidwhereprohibited.

2. TOENTER:ToregisterfortheChallenge

followtheinstructionsfound

llenge72.Registrationisbasedona

first-comefirst-servedbasisandspaceis

limited .

3. TheChallengewillcommenceandend

asannouncedonthe72HSFCwebsite.

4. Ifateam("Entrant")mustwithdraw

fromtheChallenge,Entrantmustnotify

72HSFCassoonaspossible.

5. Someoftheevents(e.g.,Kickoff,Drop

Off)maybeheldin"21yearsofageor

older"locations.Everyeffortwillbe

madetoensurethatanyunder21

teamswillnotbeaffectedadversely.

Entrantsmaywishtoconsiderhavingat

leastonememberofitsteambe21

yearsorolder.

6. Entrantswillberequiredtosignthe

standard72-HourShortFILMChallenge

TeamLeader'sAgreement.Ifunderthe

legalageofmajorityinyourstateof

residence,yourparentorlegalguardian

mustsignitonyourbehalf.Acopyof

thisagreementisavailableat

www.StudentFILMCollective.org/Challe

nge72.

7. Allcostsassociatedwiththeproduction

oftheEntryaresolelytheresponsibility

oftheEntrant.

8. EligibleEntrieswillbejudgedbasedon

thejudgingcriteriastatedbelow.

9. Entrantsmustbepresentatthe

designatedtimesatthedesignated

Eventtoparticipate.

10. BasicRequirementoftheChallenge:AttheKickoffEvent,Entrantswillreceive

anassignmentandbegivenexactly72

hourstomakeavideo(an"Entry").

11. CHALLENGETERMSOFSUBMISSION:

BysubmittinganEntryintothis

Challenge,eachEntrantwarrantsand

representsthattheEntrantownsall

rightstotheEntryhe/sheisenteringin

thisChallenge,including,without

limitation,thevideoordigital

recording,andtheperformance

containedineachEntry,withthe

exceptionofanyassetsprovidedbythe

72HSFCforusebyEntrantsin

connectionwiththisChallenge.Each

Entrantfurtherwarrantsandrepresents

thattheEntranthasobtained

permissionfromeachpersonwho

appearsintheEntrytogranttherights

totheChallengePartiesdescribedin

theseOfficialRules,andwillsubmit

copiesofsuchpermissionstothe

ChallengeParties.Bysubmittingan

Entry,EntrantagreestotheOfficial

Rules,andfurtheragreestoindemnify

andholdthe72HSFC,ChallengeParties

andtheirrespectiveaffiliates,officers,

directors,agents,co-brandersorother

partners,andanyoftheiremployees

(collectively,the"Challenge

Indemnitees"),harmlessfromanyand

allclaims,damages,expenses,costs

(includingreasonableattorneys'fees)

andliabilities(includingsettlements),

broughtorassertedbyanythirdparty

againstanyoftheChallenge

Indemniteesduetoorarisingoutofthe

Entrant'sEntrymaterialsinthis

Challenge,ortheEntrant'sconduct

duringandinconnectionwiththis

Challenge,includingbutnotlimitedto

trademark,copyright,orother

intellectualpropertyrights,rightof

publicity,rightofprivacyordefamation.

Entrantagreestorelease,indemnify

andholdharmlessTheStudentFILM

Collective,72HSFCandtheChallenge

Partiesfromanyandallclaimsthatany

advertising,presentation,webcontent

oranyothermaterialsubsequently

produced,presented,and/orprepared

byoronbehalfof72HSFCorthe

ChallengePartiesinfringesontherights

ofEntrant'sworkascontainedinany

Entry.

12. Asaconditionofentry,participantsmustagreetotheTeamLeader's

Agreement,whichsetsforththerights

ofEntrantand72HSFCwithrespectto

theuseofEntriesby72HSFC.Entries

thatdonotincludeallrequired

informationandadheretothe

foregoingandfollowingrequirements

willbeconsideredvoidandwillnotbe

consideredinthisChallenge.

13. TeamsareencouragedtousethemembersoftheStudentFILMCollective

ontheirfilms.

14. Memberswhowishtoparticipatebutdonotbelongtoateammayregisterto

participate.Howevertheymustattend

theKick-offeventandfindateamto

workon.

15. IfanygroupofindividualselectstocollaborateonanEntry,theyare

requiredtodesignateone(1)personas

theagentofthegrouptoenterthe

Challenge,agreetotheseOfficialRules,

signtheTeamLeader'sAgreementand

accepttheprizeonbehalfofthegroup.

Neither72HSFCnoranyofthe

ChallengePartiesareliableforany

disputesbetweencollaboratorsarising

outoforrelatedtotheChallenge.

16. SELECTIONOFWINNERS:Entrieswillbe

judgedbyaprocessinwhichqualified

panelsofjudgeswillevaluatethe

eligibleentriesbasedonthefollowing

judgingcriteria:

ArtisticMerit (e.g.,Story,Creativity,

EntertainmentValue)(45%)

TechnicalMerit (30%)

AdherencetotheAssignment (25%)

The Top Entry will be declared the

winner.Intheeventofatie,thetiewill

bebrokenbasedonthehighestscorein

the first Judging Criteria, continuing

thereafter to each Judging Criteria in

order, as needed to break the tie.

Entrantsagreethatthe72HSFChasthe

sole right to decide all matters and

disputesarisingfromthisChallengeand

that all decisions of 72HSFC are final

andbinding.

17. ONE(1)TOPPRIZE:ThetopEntrywill

beawarded(prizeyettobedetermined);andwillbefeaturedatthe

CollectiveShortsFILMShowattheend

oftheyear.

18. GENERALCONDITIONS:By

participating,Entrantsagreetothese

OfficialRuleswhicharefinaland

bindinginallrespects.TheChallengeis

governedbythelawsoftheCityofNew

York,NewYork,USA,andallclaims

mustberesolvedinNewYorkcourtsor

theFederalcourtslocatedinNewYork

City.

19. LIMITATIONSOF LIABILITY AND

RELEASE:Noliabilityorresponsibilityis

assumedbytheStudentFilmCollective,

Parties resulting from any user's

participation in or attempt to

participateintheChallengeorabilityor

inability to upload or download any

information in connection with

participating in the Challenge. No

responsibility or liability is assumed by

the 72HSFC or Challenge Parties for

technical problems or technical

malfunction arising in connectionwithanyofthefollowingoccurrenceswhich

may affect the operation of the

Challenge:hardwareorsoftwareerrors;

faulty computer, telephone, cable,

satellite, network, electronic, wireless

orInternetconnectivityorotheronline

communication problems; errors or

l imitations of any Internet service

providers, servers, hosts or providers;

garbled, jumbled or faulty data

transmissions; failure of any e-mail

transmissions to be sent or received;

lost,late,delayedorinterceptede-mail

transmissions; inaccessibility of the

Web Site in whole or in part for any

reason; traffic congestion on the

InternetortheWebSite;unauthorized

human or non-human intervention of

the operation of the Challenge,

including without limitation,

unauthorizedtampering,hacking,theft,

virus, bugs, worms; or destruction of

any aspect of the Challenge, or loss,

miscount, misdirection, inaccessibility

or unavailability of an email account

usedin connectionwith theChallenge.

72HSFC and Challenge Parties are not

responsibleforanytypographicalerrors

intheannouncementofprizesorthese

Official Rules, or any inaccurate or

incorrect data contained on the Web

Site. Use of Web Site is at user's own

E. Eachparticipatinggroupmusthavea

Attheevent,eachgroupmust

submitacompleteTeamLeader's

Agreement,signedbyitsteam

website.)Ateammaynot

participatewithoutsubmittingthis

agreement.

Eachgroupwillchoosethegenre

ofitsfilminarandomdrawing.

Teamswillbegiventheoptionof

relinquishingthegenreselectedin

thedrawingforaWildCardgenre.

IfoptingfortheWildCard,teams

maynotgobacktotheiroriginal

genre.

F. Eachparticipatinggroupwillbe

assignedrequiredelementsthatmust

appearinitsfilm,suchasagenre,a

character,apropand/oralineofdialogue.

TherequiredCharacterandProp

mustbeseenon-screen.

TherequiredLineofDialoguemust

beusedverbatim.Itmaybe

spoken,sungand/orwritten.It

maybeinanylanguage,thoughif

itisunclearthatitistherequired

Toqualifyasan"Official72Hour

Film,"eachgroup'sfilmmustbein

thegenreitselectsandmust

containallrequiredelementswithintheofficialtimelimitand

priortothecredits.

G. Allcastandcrewmustbecome

membersoftheStudentFILM

Collective,andmustparticipateas

non-paidvolunteers.

H. Anytypeofvideoorfilmcameramay

beused,however,amaximumofonly

threecamerasmaybeusedtoshoot

footageforuseinyourfilm.Sound

recordersareallowedinadditiontothis

three-cameralimit.Camerasusedforapurposeotherthanrecordingvideo

footage(forexample,asprops,editing

decks,soundrecorders,ortorecord

solelybehind-the-scenesfootage)are

allowedinadditiontothisthree-camera

limit.

I. Filmmakersareencouragedtouse

StudentFILMCollectivemembersas

castandcrew.

J. Participatinggroupsareencouragedto

workwithalocalcomposerand/or

musicianstowriteandrecordmusicfor

thefilms.Itispermissiblefora

participatinggrouptousepre-recorded

music;howevertheparticipating

groupmust havetherightstoanymusic

usedinitsfilmandmustprovide

releasesforallmusicused.Aswith

music,pre-recordedsoundeffectsare

allowed,butyoumusthaverightsto

usethem.

Note:Songparodies(i.e.,useof

identifiablepre-existingcompositions

withneworalteredlyricsormusic)may

notbeincludedinthefilmwithouta

signedreleasefromthecomposition’s

rightsholder.Thisruleapplieswithout

regardtowhetherthesongparody

arguablyconstitutes"fairuse"underUS

orinternationalcopyrightlaw.

K. Thefinishedfilmmustbeaminimumof

4minutesinduration,andamaximumof6minutesinduration—notincluding

filminanywaybeforethepremiere

screenings.Thisincludesuploadingthe

filmtoanywebsite.TheEntrantis

encouragedtomakeatraileroftheir

filmanddistributethatinstead.This

trailershouldbenolongerthan72

seconds.

T. Tobecertifiedasan"Official72Hour

Film,"eachparticipatinggroup's

film/videoproductionmustfollowall

rulesherein.The72-HourShortFILM

ChallengeOrganizersreservetherighttoscreenonlycertified"Official72Hour

Films."

U. NoEntries(mediaordocuments)willbe

returned.

V. 72SHFCandProjectPartiesmay,intheir

solediscretion,disqualifyEntries

deemedtobeinappropriateor

otherwisenon-compliant.

W. Allcertified"Official72HourFilms"are

eligibletocompeteforthetitleofBest

72HourFilminitscity.

X. Allfilmsareeligibletocompetefortitle

ofBest72HourFilm.Panelsof

independentjudgeswilldeterminethe

winners.

Y. TheStudentFILMCollectiveOfficers

andEventOrganizersmayaddtoor

amendtheserulesatanytimepriorto

thebeginningofthe72Hourtime

period.
