Mee ng Minutes of August 6, 2014
Lion President Arthur Browne Jr. welcomed everyone to the mee ng at 11:50 A.M. Lion Ron Hall led the group in song, at first for “God Bless America” and then “The Eyes of Texas” with guest Pa y Browne at the piano. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion Henry Simms. In the absence of Lion Chaplain Tammy Swann, Lion May Nell Neugent offered the Prayer of the Day. Our guests of the day were announced by Lion Daniel Espinosa: Pa y Browne, wife of Li‐on President Arthur; Lion Dianne Cooke and her Service Dog Barbara, guests of Lion Marty Ross; and Lion Bobby Seiferman from Round Rock. Welcome friends! BIRTHDAYS Birthday wishes were sung for August Birthday Lions Maeve Reddin, Daniel Espinosa, Mary Whitehead and Gladys Vidal. ANNIVERSARIES A special 54th Anniversary for Lion Dick and Bobbye Porter was announced for August 16th! Congratula ons to you both! ANNOUNCEMENTS ‘This Day in History’ – Past District Governor Lion Rod Chisholm provided informa on about our world in 1762. It seems that the Bri sh Foreign Minister John Montague was enjoying a relaxing a ernoon with lunch and, can you believe it? Gambling! The 40‐ish guy didn’t want to give up a winning streak to eat his meal. So he asked for meat and cheese and a piece of bread and ate this concoc on with one hand while he con nued to gamble. Onlookers liked this unique way of dining and because he was the 4th Earl of Sandwich began calling it a “Sandwich”. This has carried through into today’s world! PDG Lion Rod then asked if anyone had ques ons about the proposed Club move to the Petro‐leum Club for our twice monthly luncheons. He reminded us that the vote on this would be at the August 20th mee ng. This is part of our “Project 100” for our Club. We will be 100 years old in October, 2015, and Rod’s suggested goal for us is to have 100 or more members at that me. This is how we will return to our being one of the Leading Lions Clubs in Texas.
Induc on of new member PDG Lion Rod invited our new member Lion Nancy Richter and her sponsor Lion Jan Wolf to the front of the room where Nancy could be sworn in as our newest Club member. The Cere‐mony was held and everyone applauded and welcomed Lion Nancy. Lion Rod also announced that Lion Bobby Seiferman from Round Rock, Texas, is working for the Express‐News and has been designated as an Associate Member of our Club. We welcome our new members!
Golf Commi ee Mee ng — In Lion Jackie Wynn’s absence today, Lion Dave Splitek will chair this mee ng a er today’s luncheon. It was announced that the funding for the Picciu addi on to a Pavilion at the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville has been completed and the addi on is quite a rac ve. This was a funding plan that our Club kicked off to honor Lion Chuck Picciu ’s work for the Camp he a ended as a child and served later as a Counselor. Lions—your assistance is needed in our Club. You can sign up to help with the mee ngs by in‐troducing our speakers, guests, serving as a greeter, etc. If everyone takes a role in the success of our Club the burden will not fall on just a few. INTRODUCTION OF GUEST SPEAKER ‐ Lion Dr. David Splitek introduced our Speaker for the day: Mr. Bart Sherwood Execu ve Director and Founder of “Train a Dog – Save a Warrior” to talk about this important program to help bring some peace and a new quality of life to service members who come home with post‐trauma c stress disorder (PTSD) and other life‐altering condi ons. Sherwood, a Pharmacist, moved to San Antonio in 1985 and established the Oak Park Village Pharmacy which he owned and worked in for 20 years. He also got involved with Penny’s From Heaven Founda on, a nonprofit therapy dog organiza on that takes canines to visit local Mili‐tary medical centers and other facili es to visit war veterans. Along the way one veteran called him to ask if he could have his own dog to help him get along each day. Penny’s From Heaven wasn’t equipped to fill this need but Sherwood decided to es‐tablish another program, TADSAW, which could. The suicide rate for these returning veterans is climbing and the use of trained companion dogs is one way to help make their lives be er. A veteran and canine, o en a dog rescued from a shelter, go through training together, learning up to 82 different cues where the dog can recognize that his owner needs help. Since its incep‐on in 2010, the program has accredited more than 300 dog service teams across the United
States and more than 300 dog teams are in training. Sherwood sees his volunteer work as a way to give back to the community. He sees the therapy dogs help save the lives of many of their military companions through their human‐canine bond. The “Catch‐22” for this program is that the suicide rates con nue to grow, fueled in part by the fact that in today’s world the field survival rate is higher than in previous conflicts and there are many more who return home even though they have been seriously affected by their war expe‐riences. He es mates that there were probably 75,000 lost to PTSD over the long years of war. He sees his program as one of the ways to fight this dismal trend. Not everyone responds to the established treatment trends of medica on and counseling for PTSD, but many may do even be er with a devoted and trained dog companion.
Interes ng and effec ve program, Bart Sherwood! Thank you for your work and for bringing “Colonel” your dog assistant today. Lion President Arthur thanked him for his me and presenta on and gave him our gi of a Texas limestone paperweight. Tail Twister Lion Mike Gonzales conducted the Tail Twister Drawing. There was no winner to‐day. Adjournment ‐ The group joined hands and we sang our closing song “Til We Meet Again”. ‐ Respec ully submi ed by Lion Maeve Reddin
