Summer is nearly over and I hope all our parish members had plenty of rest and
are ready to work. Please keep the following dates in mind:
October 24 & 25, 2015 – 56th Western Eparchy Assembly – St. John’s Cathedral
November 14, 2015 – Puschennia at St. Michael’s Parish Hall
November 22, 2015 – Parish Khram
Delegates are required to attend the Western Eparchy Assembly. We need a
minimum of one and possibly two delegates. Any Volunteers, come and see me
before September 15, 2015. It is an opportunity to learn what is happening in the
parishes in Alberta and British Columbia and to voice your opinions and ideas.
A BIG thank you to all the members who have helped work the Bingos during
the summer months. The funds generated pay our operational costs. Korneil has
been having problems staffing these bingos. Next January we will need to
consider the option of whether we can continue working the bingos. Our license
expires May 31, 2016. The parish members may need to consider other ideas for
fund raising since many members choose not to attend the Divine Liturgies or
contribute their monthly donations in their absence.
Get Well Wishes are extended to Alex Palamarek, MaryAnn Euchuk, Rose
Chornoluk, Jenny Budy, Pat Truchan, Eva Scobie, Rev. Father Nicholas and any
other members who are ill at home or in the hospital. May God grant you the
strength to recover from your illness. We pray that you will soon join us at church.
Membership: There are a few members who have not paid their parish
membership for 2015. If you choose not to pay, please let us know. You have that
choice. Remember if you are not a member of the parish, you will be required to
pay for the use of the church and the hall if you are having a funeral or any event
catered. Changes were made due to having people paid to do the main work. Our
volunteer base has dropped significantly. Please mail your membership fee to the
church address rather than passing it via other people.
If you have moved, please let us know your new address. I forward the new
address to the Consistory so the Bicnyk arrives at your door. Thank for looking
after this matter. If you do not wish to receive the Bicnyk, please let me know.
A few people have let me know that they are no longer interested in receiving the
Bicnyk and I have cancelled it on their behalf.
Parish Board meeting scheduled for September 15 will begin at 7:30 p.m. Note
the change in the time of the meeting.
Why do we belong to our Ukrainian Orthodox Parish and its organizations?
Our personal values match those of our organizations. Our organization has four
pillars: Faith – to preserve and enrich the Ukrainian Orthodox faith and heritage
Culture – Maintain, support and promote our Ukrainian Canadian culture (our
roots)
Leadership – need to create a new and inspiring view of leadership that will
attract and inspire members to become involved and engaged in building a strong
organization. While goals give you direction, culture gives you the energy to get
there. To achieve this you need minimal politics, minimal confusion, high morale
and high trust.
Entertainment (fun) – need to enjoy what we are doing in our organizations.
Our challenge –how do we attract new, younger members and keep our
Ukrainian Canadian community continually renewed and revitalized?
Culture answers four questions: 1) What do you value? 2) Where are we headed?
3) What makes us special? 4) What is it we do that makes a difference in people’s
lives? Think about the above and voice your ideas.
The Black Dot
This beautiful story has a simple, yet important message.
One day, a professor entered the classroom and asked his students to prepare for
a surprise test. They all waited anxiously at their desks for the exam to begin. The
professor handed out the exams with the text facing down, as usual. Once he
handed them all out, he asked the students to turn over the papers. To
everyone’s surprise, there were no questions – just a black dot in the center of
the sheet of paper. The professor, seeing the expression on everyone’s faces, told
them the following:
“I want you to write about what you see there.” The students, confused, got
started on the inexplicable task. At the end of class, the professor took all the
exams, and started reading each one of them out loud, in front of all the students.
All of them, with no exception, defined the black dot, trying to explain its position
in the center of the sheet.
After all had been read, the classroom silent, the professor started to explain. I’m
not going to grade you on this, I just wanted to give you something to think about.
No one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black
dot – and the same happens in our lives. We have a white piece of paper to
observe and enjoy, but we always focus on the dark spots.
Our life is a gift given to us by God, with love and care, and we always have
reasons to celebrate – nature renewing itself every day, our friends around us,
the job that provides our livelihood, the miracles we see every day ……..
However, we insist on focusing only on the dark spot, the health issues that
bother us, the lack of money, the complicated relationships with family
members, the disappointment with a friend.
The dark spots are very small when compared to everything we have in our lives,
but they’re the ones that pollute our mind.
Take your eyes away from the black dots in your life. ‘Enjoy each one of your
blessings, each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live a life filled with
love.’

National Executive
2015-2017
The Ukrainian Self-Reliance League of Canada (USRL) held the Biennial 59th National Convention in Calgary
August 5 to 9, 2015. A chart of this all encompassing organization is on another page of this bulletin. There was
a good representation from all branches of USRL. A total of 138 delegates were present. There were 48
CYMKivtsi, 38 UWAC representatives, 16 TYC, 8 CYC, 16 representing the UWAC museum and 6 clergy.
The Convention opened with an all day presentation and workshop led by David Irvine titled “Renewing our
Organization”. We met in small groups and were guided to discuss the cohesiveness of the executive, is our
organization clear about our values and culture, how can we improve our organization to make it more desirable
and how do we measure success. This is only part of the all day discussion. Mr. Irvine will compile the ideas
from the different groups and will make them available to Dr. Tony Harras, President of USRL.
On the following days, each branch of the USRL held their Annual General Meeting and presented committee
reports and financial statements.
On Friday, the UWAC held their biennial meeting. Executive reports were presented to the membership,
resolutions for the next two years were presented and discussed and voted on. Finally, a new executive for the
next two years was elected.
Standing L to R: Donna Reid, 2nd Vice President; Dobr. Orysia Ehrmantraut, 3rd Vice President; Dorothy Stachniak,
Financial Review; Pauline Mudry, 1st Vice President; Darcia Moskaluk-Rutkay, Member at Large; Rt. Rev. Protopresbyter
Nicholas Rauliuk, Chaplain; Karen Herzog, Treasurer; Shirley Wozimirsky, Financial Review; Carla Kozak, Member at
Large; Vivian Skakun, 4th Vice President; Nadia Opyr, Financial Review.
Sitting L to R: Donna Kowalishin, Secretary; Lesia Perritt, President; His Eminence Metropolitan Yurij; Dr. Geraldine
Nakonechny, Past President; Betty Corlet, Promin.
This has certainly been a busy summer for everyone. With the SOBOR held in
Winnipeg and the USRL Convention held in Calgary, there has been plenty of
food for thought generated.
I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable and restful summer. Our prayers are
with the people who are ill. May the good Lord be kind to you and make your
ailment a short one.
