1 Introduction
The Octopus 600 can be used as a standalone Perimeter, or within the EyeSuite network. For printing the report files, different ways to access the printer are possible:
If the Octopus 600 is used within an EyeSuite network, the printing of the report files can be done over the printer connected to the network. This is the most stable and efficient setup.
If the Octopus 600 is used as a standalone Perimeter, (e.g. not connected to a computer network), Haag-Streit recommends the usage of a network capable printer. The network capable printer must support standard protocols (e.g. PCL5e, PCL6, Postscript, or alike). These printers can be connected over the Ethernet connector to the Octopus 600. This connecter is not used for a network connection. Nowadays, many affordable printers are network capable.
The third solution is the usage of a USB printer, which is connected over the USB connector with the Octopus 600. Even though most drivers for common printers are available on the system, it is not possible to support all of the available printers and drivers. It can happen that certain USB printers will not work. The manual installation of specific printer drivers by the end user is not possible due to regulatory guidelines.
A list of the recommended and tested USB printers can be found in Appendix A of this application note.
In the following, the set up procedures for these three options are described:

2 Set up Instructions
2.1 Printing through an Ethernet network
Proceed as follows to configure a printer in a network. The IP address of the printer needs to be known:
Open
> tools > preferences
Select
> operation system settings
Click
> printer manager on “tools” tab
Click
> add
Select
> find network printer
Fill in
> IP address of the printer into the field host: i.e. 172.16.28.24 (address must be a fixed ip address)
Click
> find
After the network printer is found, click
> Forward
Wait, this can take up to 2 minutes

> your printer model driver from the list on the right hand side
(if your printer is not listed, choose the driver model that is closed to your printer)
Click
> forward
Click
> apply
Print ‘Test page’

2.2 Printing using a network capable Printer
A network capable printer is connected over the Ethernet port with the Octopus 600. Proceed as follows to configure the IP addresses of the printer and Octopus 600.
a. Set up the Octopus 600 with a fixed IP address
Open
> tools > preferences
Select
> operating system settings
Click
> network manager on tools tab
Click
> edit
Select
> manual
Click
> add
Fill in
> IP address

Fill in
> netmask (i.e.255.255.255.0)
Click
> save
Click
> close
b. Set up the printer connected via Ethernet cable
Note: The printer must have a fixed IP address. In order to set up the printer with a fixed IP-address contact the “instruction for use” of your printer or contact your network administrator.

2.3 Printing using a USB Printer
A USB printer is connected over the USB ports with the Octopus 600. Proceed as follows to configure/add a USB printer:
Open
> tools > preferences
Select
> operation system settings
Click
> printer manager on “tools” tab
> Wait for 2 minutes minutes until the driver is installed automatically and the printer icons appear
If the driver is not automatically installed:
Click
> add
Wait until the Printer Manager detects the printer and adds it to the “Devices” list.

Select the printer in the list and click “Forward”.
A dialog “Searching for drivers” appears. This step might take a moment until a suitable driver is Found
Verify that the correct make has been selected. Then click “Forward”. If the Printer Manager chooses a “Generic” driver, choose the printer make instead.

Verify that the correct model has been selected.
(if your printer is not listed, choose the driver model that is closed to your printer)
Click
> forward
Click
> apply
Print ‘Test page’
Check
The printer will then appear in the Printer Manager and is ready to use.
> if green tick is shown on your default printer
(if not, click right mouse button and select printer as default printer)
Be aware that it can be that your selected USB printer might not be supported by the system. Appendix A shows a list of USB printers that are tested to work with the Octopus 600.
We suggest the usage of a network capable printer.
Further, a variety of instructional videos, also on how to connect USB printers, are available in the Login section (Technical Support / Octopus / Octopus 600 / Instructional Videos) of the Haag-Streit website.
