October 2016 Bulletin If you were unable to attend the Homecoming in Campbellsville the 24 th of September, you missed a good time with all members of the Legion family, a wonderful meal and a fantastic DJ. So far I have visited District 8 and District 11. I enjoyed seeing friends that I haven’t seen for a while and meeting new friends. I even met another Betty Butler at the District 11 meeting! Both meetings were followed with a delicious meal. Now we have to get down to business and really work our Programs. Membership is very important as always so let’s focus on achieving more members than we did last year. Work with the Legion and have them tell you when they sign up a new member, so you can contact the spouse and any possible junior members. I would really like to see more reporting than last year. I know every Unit is doing something in our programs so report it. If I can help you in any way, just contact me. Betty Butler President, Dept. of Kentucky 502‐600‐1480 [email protected]

American Legion Auxiliary Department of Kentucky

Finance Bulletin October 2016

Operations of the Department is dependent upon the level of membership attained and the submission of assessments to the Department. Condensed budgets are attached in this bulletin to reflect the current, projected operations of our Department. Please note that this is the first time that condensed budgets have disseminated to the Units. The Department Budget is approved annually by the Department Executive Committee at the post-convention DEC meeting. Our deficit budgets reflect the shortfall of revenues to cover the operating needs of the Department. The Department finances are divided into four areas.

1. The General fund is primarily dependent upon the revenue from membership. 2. The Convention fund is dependent upon revenue from the conference and convention registrations. 3. The Healing Field fund is dependent upon revenues specifically designated for that project. 4. The Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Fund is dependent upon the funds remitted as VA&R

assessments and the percentage of revenues from Poppy donations.

Please remember that in order to receive awards at Winter Conference and subsequent conferences, the VA&R Assessments of $30 plus 15 cents per senior member must be remitted to the Department by December 31, 2016.

There is also an Operating Assessment to augment the funding of the Department operations. This assessment is $25 plus 25 cents per senior member as of yearend.

While it is realized that our Units sometimes struggle to generate sufficient revenues to support all desired programs, we must support the Department as well as the programs of our organizations.

Virginia Hobbs

Finance Chairman

MEMBERSHIP OCTOBER BULLETIN

"Enhancing the Membership Experience" - National Theme "Kentucky Racing Towards Number One in Membership" - Dept Theme

The membership team wants to Praise all of our hard-working members that have already renewed their dues! Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our Veterans. Our membership team is there for you and can come and assist your Unit or District with any membership needs you may have. Please consider contacting us to assist in a membership celebration day at your Unit.

As we are Racing Towards #1 in Membership we are currently behind last year's numbers, but it is early in the year. We can do this, we just need to get the sludge out and accelerate our programs. If our membership vehicles are well tuned and a car that people want to ride in, we will soon be attracting new members and our current members will never want to ride with anyone else but us! WE WANT TO BE THE TOP DEPARTMENT IN THE SOUTHERN DIVISION STOPPING THE SLIDE!! Keep accelerating and hold fast. If every member will recruit one new member, we can be in front of the pack.

Members that didn't renew last year are like a car in the pit area being worked on. We need to be there for them and give them a honk and see if they won't consider rejoining! Even if they can't attend meetings, their dues is an essential part of how we fund our programs and we need their voice to ensure we have enough punch in Congress to advocate for our Veterans.

If they say it is too expensive to pay $20-$30 per year for membership, counter with this: $20-$30 per year is the cost of giving up three cups of coffee a month; six fast food meals a year; or looking at it as less than $3 a month. Aren't our Veterans worth that and aren't you as a member worth that? For that low price you will gain new friends, make a difference and give back, and also be eligible to sign up for $1,000-$5,000 free life insurance from thelit.com and other great hotel and travel benefits at no cost.

Just remember, everyone that has paid their dues by October 16th, 2016 will be automatically entered into a drawing for a $50 cash prize and a Praise Award. Also, Each Unit in their respective District that has the most renewals (large and small Units, 2 Units for Each District) will receive a special prize and a Praise Certificate.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WAYS TO PAY DUES: YOU CAN PAY YOUR DUES ON-LINE at https://www.alaforveterans.org/. Members must log in to their ALA member account in the ALA member portal in order to pay their dues. The "Pay Dues" button will appear next to the welcome message once you log in.

YOU CAN PAY YOUR DUES BY CALLING (317) 569-4536.

YOU CAN GET YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD TEXTED TO A CELLPHONE (never fumble through your purse looking for your card again) You need the member name and phone carrier (like Verizon, ATT, etc.)

A NEW MEMBER CAN SIGN UP ONLINE TO UNIT 200 IMMEDIATELY. How this works is that they review the eligibility criteria and certify that they qualify, enter their contact information and the ALA system sends them instructions on how to make a National ALA online account and how to pay their portion of the Department and National dues. Once completed, they are then signed up for Unit 200. The credit for the member goes to Unit 200 for the first year even if they transfer into a Unit within that year.

How This Benefits Us: Each month, the membership chairman will send a listing of all Unit 200 members to the District Presidents to review to see if any of these members are in your District's area. The Units can call the 200 member to see if they are interested in transferring to a Unit. To transfer to a Unit in the Department of Kentucky they must pay the Unit portion of their dues and all current membership criteria applies (such as proof of eligibility and Post approval). If you have read this and want to win a prize, email me at [email protected] saying "I read the Bulletin" and provide your full name and be the first one email I receive for this and win a prize. If you are able to attend the conference, you will receive your gift there. If not, I can ship to you.

P.S. Don't forget - November 11th is Veterans Day and what a wonderful way to show our patriotism by wearing an Honor Their Service button. I will have forms at the conferences, on our webpage and can mail them out to you. They are also available at the National ALA webpage. If you aren't sure about how to send the pictures, bring an old photo to conference and I can snap a picture with my phone and email to the correct contact. It works great and you will have your button in no time. For all my veterans that I am eligible through, I have a button that I display on a ribbon.

Hello everyone!

I am so excited to start my Children & Youth Chairpersonship that I got a jump-start on the Program. I have been working with Barbara Austin and Dee Schutz for the past year in Children and Youth. I have created a new program that I would love for every unit to help participate in.

The Dignity Bag program is designed to supply our foster care workers with filled backpacks to give to the children that are being placed into foster care. We have worked with the social workers to create the list of items needed. My goal is to provide 500 Dignity Bags to the children across the state by the end of my Chairmanship. If each unit fills 5 Dignity Bags for the Child Protective Services (CPS) office in their town we can reach that goal! Please contact me if your unit would be willing to accept this challenge so that I may be able to provide you with the information on how to start the program.

Fall Conference is just around the corner! I would love for each of you to continue the school clothing program by bringing 1 article of clothing with you. I would also love for each of you to bring ONE of the following items that will be placed in the Dignity Bags:

1 package of any size diapers Package of wipes diaper rash cream

Package of socks 3 pk Package of underwear Toothbrush/paste

Travel Deodorant Travel Bodywash Travel shampoo/conditioner

1 babywash/shampoo 1 package of pacifiers Comb/Brush

I have some exciting raffles for the conferences this year! Bring your money so that you can purchase chances! Also, don’t forget we will have our bake sale again. If anyone would like to bring individually wrapped snacks I would be so excited!

I am looking forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks at conference! Don’t forget to report any of your projects to me!

October 2016 Good Afternoon Ladies, I have been ask to be chairman for child welfare for 2016-2017. Our programs were a great success last year. In case you have not heard, we raised over $5057.00! My daddy used to say “If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it”. I want you to continue to “Feed the Pigs” and send your checks to Jennifer. Please make the checks out to ALA Child Welfare. I still have plenty of my pins. I will be selling them with an ink pen for $5.00. I have plenty! I want to continue the school clothing program. Please bring new clothes to the Fall Conference. The schools can also use shoes, socks and underwear. Don’t forget, a lot of the kids are as big as we are. I ask that you bring only one item. If you can afford more that would be great! If you don’t want to go shopping, then give me your donation, and I will shop for you. The clothes collected at Fall Conference will go to District 1. The more clothes we give, the greater I see the need for them. Please help child welfare help the children of Kentucky. If you have any questions, just call me. Dee Schutz Child Welfare Chairman 502-338-3490

Americanism Americanism and the 2014-2019 Centennial Strategic Plan – Promoting Patriotism and responsible citizenship help us fulfill our brand promise (Goal 5) by giving U.S. citizens a chance to participate in our mission by feeling patriotic and demonstrating their support in an active, visible way. What is this program and why do we have it? The Americanism program promotes patriotism and responsible citizenship. What can you do? 1.Be knowledgeable about flag history, etiquette and proper disposable methods; and promote the observation of patriotic holidays so your community will look to the ALA for information. Ideas:

• Publish flag etiquette tips in your newspaper and on social media. • Practice respect for our flag at public events, such as sporting events. • Educate others on how to respect the flag. • If you have an idea about how to promote Americanism, let your unit know. • Conduct a flag disposal ceremony. • Host flag awareness events and communicate information: In schools, at your post

home, at public functions. • Participate in local patriotic holiday events. • Organize a patriotic holiday event. • Encourage local businesses to fly a flag, especially on patriotic holidays. • Assemble pocket flags. Identify and distribute assembled pocket flags to active-duty

military overseas. 2. Encourage members and others to vote and to support the amendment to protect the United States flag from desecration. The amendment currently reads, “The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.” 3. Increase participation in the Americanism Essay Contest. This year’s theme is: “How does learning about government and our America help you become a future guardian of the liberties of our country?” Deadline to get essays to me will be March 15, 2017.

It was stressed that your unit or district hold an orientation for the delegates that have been chosen to participate at our American legion Auxiliary Girls State program so they can be better prepared on what they need and the expectation of them when they are at the program. We can all be of service to promote the Kentucky American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program to all the schools in our city, county and districts in the state of Kentucky. It was highly stated they we as American Legion Auxiliary members are the ones that put this ALA Girls State program and we need to be involved the selection process of the delegates that will be attending ALA KY Girls State and make sure that the delegates that your units know who is sponsoring them to go to ALA KY Girls State, by surveys that was done over half of the delegates from the program didn’t know who sponsor them, few response was the schools, it is our “Program” the American Legion Auxiliary and we have to do better in promoting our programs and asked to see if they are eligible to be American Legion Auxiliary members also when you are talking with their parents. Our fee is still $225 this year and the Girls State program again will be held at University of the Cumberland, Williamsburg, KY, and June 4-9, 2017. The website will be updated with all the new forms for the ALA Kentucky Girls State programs soon as possible. We ask that the students and chairmen pay close attention to details on the forms so there will not be any problem on the form or application. The Samsung scholarship will be online for your delegates to fill out the application for it. Please remind the delegates they need to fill out everything because if they don’t they will not be able to get back in the system after they get to ALA Girls State program after midnight to change or add anything. Girls State Chairman, Unit Presidents please remember you are the ones that is responsible for the forms getting to the director and please DO NOT SEND FEES (MONEY) TO THE DIRECTOR, it goes directly to the department in the memo line state Girls Program for sponsoring the girls or a counselor. If units need any help please contact us anytime by email would be quick, but call us anytime. We have some new ideals that we are working on for the 2017 ALA Girls State program and we are looking forward to another great year. We will give you more updates when we get them.
